Also, a youtube video today which says basically nothing. The countdown clock expires on Monday, though, which is the day that was originally the central piece of the rumor. New track then, hopefully.

Justin Timberlake does "Countdown."

JT 2013: second-rate Robin Thicke

Hrmmmmmm...

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 January 2013 04:41 (eleven years ago) link

lol at ship rushing out the gate to shit in everyone's cornflakes as per usual.

this is a dope robin thicke song. would be better without jay's part killing the momentum tho.

The Reverend, Monday, 14 January 2013 04:53 (eleven years ago) link

i dont like the intro.

rap steve gadd (D-40), Monday, 14 January 2013 04:55 (eleven years ago) link

haha well i ain't gonna kick off the convo with "what do YOU guys think?"

some dude, Monday, 14 January 2013 04:56 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I think I'd like this 200% more w/o any Jay-Z.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 January 2013 04:57 (eleven years ago) link

it goes on for like 3 minutes before he makes a sound, not hard to imagine what it would sound like without him

some dude, Monday, 14 January 2013 05:01 (eleven years ago) link

True, but Rev is right that it kills momentum. I'd go one step further and say that Jay's part retroactively kills momentum (that didn't even begin until the intro was over). Structurally, it's a mess.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 January 2013 05:08 (eleven years ago) link

it could be tighter for sure but it's totally enjoyable

The Reverend, Monday, 14 January 2013 05:09 (eleven years ago) link

wow that intro really is grim

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 January 2013 05:15 (eleven years ago) link

feel like this fulfils the worst case scenario for this single but i still have high hopes for the album

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 January 2013 05:16 (eleven years ago) link

it's so chintzy, i feel like i need mouthwash

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 January 2013 05:17 (eleven years ago) link

R. Kelly must be rolling his eyes when listening to this.

Chief Duff (Eazy), Monday, 14 January 2013 05:23 (eleven years ago) link

idk this feels album track-y but not bad

rap steve gadd (D-40), Monday, 14 January 2013 05:25 (eleven years ago) link

yeah it could easily be the weakest track on a good album. wouldn't be the first time that was true of a big event lead single.

some dude, Monday, 14 January 2013 05:28 (eleven years ago) link

Strange intro. Chintzy's a good word for the main section of the track, although that glissando is nice. I don't think it's Jay that's killing the momentum. It's the change-up in the tempo and in the production. But I do like how it picks back up at the end. Interesting to hear whether the rest of the production on this album follows similar form.

Eggs and the marketing board behind them, Monday, 14 January 2013 05:28 (eleven years ago) link

underwhelming :\

teledyldonix, Monday, 14 January 2013 05:30 (eleven years ago) link

First the Bowie single, and now this...Chopped 'n' screwed tempo big in '13.

Chief Duff (Eazy), Monday, 14 January 2013 05:36 (eleven years ago) link

Werkin' Girls does it too, with better results. Trend probably comes from those who started slowing down their tracks to ~75bpm for the obligatory dubstep section.

really good imo

love the chintzy horns

flopson, Monday, 14 January 2013 05:45 (eleven years ago) link

The Reverend, Monday, 14 January 2013 05:53 (eleven years ago) link

Doesn't bode well.

tsrobodo, Monday, 14 January 2013 06:15 (eleven years ago) link

I've played this three times and... nope, not liking it. :/

Roz, Monday, 14 January 2013 06:34 (eleven years ago) link

i've played this about seven times and yes i think i am kind of liking it

monotony, Monday, 14 January 2013 06:44 (eleven years ago) link

and yes that intro is ungainly and jay-z is unsurprisingly lacklustre but those harps! the corny horns! JT you can show me a few things.

monotony, Monday, 14 January 2013 06:48 (eleven years ago) link

The intro had me fearing the worst, but the song isn't bad, really. It's not that good, either, but it improves in the slow section after Jay's interminable guest verse - and for some reason the main groove sounds better when it comes back around in the mostly wordless coda. No way the album's gonna be as epochal as the last one was unless Tim has some genius new co-producer nobody's heard waiting in the wings. Still looking forward to it, cautiously.

mobs of burly teen christgaus (thewufs), Monday, 14 January 2013 07:10 (eleven years ago) link

JT and Timbo go Las Vegas. I kinda like it though, Jiggaboo and all.

future kendricks (longneck), Monday, 14 January 2013 09:19 (eleven years ago) link

i quite like that he's gone with this type of song for his big comeback, and the song itself isn't bad at all, but the intro and jay-z need to be cut out so badly

lex pretend, Monday, 14 January 2013 09:25 (eleven years ago) link

Ha, heard the intro, thought 'why the fuck has he released a skit' Got me worried for a minute. Got a lovely vibe, bit Inspiration Information.

Jiggaboo

uh

The Reverend, Monday, 14 January 2013 09:46 (eleven years ago) link

really sorry about that - pretty inexcusable - i was thinking along the lines of jigga being the huge r&b single's best friend (boo) but it came out 100% wrong.

I was expecting something very bad after the first reactions but I just listened to it and it's pretty smooth.
nothing amazing/big comeback but really nice.
I think this could grow on me.
anyway, I don't really see how he could have came up with something that meets the expectations after such a long time.

Looks like it'll be his first American top ten in almost a year.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 13 April 2014 13:05 (ten years ago) link

Not A Bad Thing sounds like the second single (after a Max Martin jam) on an *NSYNC reunion album named All Grown Up. So yeah it's the best single he's had in a while.

da croupier, Sunday, 13 April 2014 14:12 (ten years ago) link

yeah it really is the mildest thing he's made since N Sync, isn't it. it came as a relief after "TKO," but the more i hear it, the less i like it. the staged viral campaign w/ the couple getting engaged while the song is playing is so so lame, too.

some dude, Sunday, 13 April 2014 14:55 (ten years ago) link

don't know how I feel about the chorus' false humility either; coming from a dude with Justin's wealth he sings it like a threat.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 13 April 2014 15:01 (ten years ago) link

So don't act like it's a bad thing to fall in love with me
Cause you might fuck around and find your dreams come true with me
Spend all your time and your money just to find out that my love was free
So don't act like it's a bad thing to fall in love with me, me

i looked up the chorus cuz I find the opening "with me/with me" rhyme really insipid and grating, and it turns out he threw a "fuck" in there too that i was unaware of.

da croupier, Sunday, 13 April 2014 15:05 (ten years ago) link

between this and jessica biel producing a TV pilot about a bachelor living the high life in NYC who has a sudden change of heart after babysitting his nephew. He hires an aspiring actress to play his wife, and things get complicated when he finds himself falling for her those two are painting a pretty horrifying picture.

"Brand New" off the Pharrell album is so easily my favorite thing he's done in a while, really reaffirms that i much prefer P to Timbaland as a creative foil for Justin.

seconded

balls, Sunday, 13 April 2014 17:03 (ten years ago) link

idk feel like "Brand New" never takes off as much as it should and Justified doesn't really hold up outside of the singles mostly

Still like part 1 even though its flaws became more apparent over time. part 2 has some good stuff amidst some bad ideas but can't say I come back to it much. this single's pretty eh imo but I'll take it over "Mirrors"

i mean, let's be real, any song that sold millions of downloads and broke radio airplay records is not unanimously hated. outside of this message board it's pretty well regarded. even on Pazz & Jop it just barely missed the top 10.

sucks tho.

the lazy rhyming doesn't really bother me, since the rhyme is such an unimportant part of the hook -- it's all about the groove. it doesn't really get in the way
