oh it's def improved in some ways, props for that. just saying, my post was more pointed than just 'lol complex makes slideshows.'

getting an smartphone is the first thing that's made me understand complex's layout at all. it would be nice if they had a non-mobile version of their site tho.

you can say it's ugly but how is it difficult to navigate? you click on the name of the feature you want and it takes you there

youre apparently better at communicating ambiguity

just to be clear, you realize i'm talking about the place his vocals land on the beat (as in which part of the beat) rather than the slightly 'off' rhythmic nature of his voice that somedude is talking about, right -- hes putting his vocals down in unconventional places w/in the rhythm of the track

I tend to believe that the qualitative aspects of a classic—the ones not dictated by the great tastemaker called time—should be measured by an artist's ability to perfect their own blueprint, not The Blueprint.

Been visiting family & traveling since the 29th, so been sporadic on ilx, but is p much every thread about deej and/or chief keef now?

Andrew WKRP (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 6 January 2013 18:05 (eleven years ago) link

I figured that since we were on ilm, chief keef was some underground rapper who only put out mixtapes on datpiff or something, but i just saw one of his CDs in target today! I guess he's the taylor swift of rappers or something?

Admittedly I haven't tried to stream the YLT record yet, so maybe the "controllable" content is really awesome, but man they are really proud of themselves for catching up to what NPR has been doing for years now.

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 7 January 2013 23:07 (eleven years ago) link

I was glad to stream the album, and happy to easily see/read the liner notes for the record - something that is missing from the rest of my iTunes library. I don't really knock them for giving it a heavy PR spin, even if the BS is high. What are they supposed to do, not announce that they are streaming full albums?

blurbs for today's reviews:

Tall Ships
Everything Touching
By Laura Snapes

Known for their ferocious live show, the Brighton-based post-rock band's long-time-coming debut is equal parts meditative and cathartic.

Various Artists
L.I.E.S. Presents: American Noise
By Andrew Gaerig

Offering an unparalleled collection of fresh talent, the rise of Ron Morelli's Long Island Electrical System is one of the most significant and encouraging developments in American underground electronic music in years. This sprawling 2xCD label compilation is a bewitching collection of underground dance, experimental, and analog ephemera.

Mats Gustafsson / Colin Stetson
Stones
By Brian Howe

Recorded live at the 2011 Vancouver Jazz Festival, Stones doesn't allow Stetson and Gustafsson to complement their respective, opposing traits, but pits them against each other for a furious, abrasive record that bombards the listener into submission.

Wooden Wand
Blood Oaths of the New Blues
By Grayson Currin

During the last decade, James Jackson Toth has used the Wooden Wand handle and variations on it to release a mountain of barely compatible material. His proper debut for British vanguard Fire Records captures the best essences of this career in 41 seamless minutes.

T.I.
Trouble Man: Heavy Is the Head
By Ian Cohen

T.I.'s scattershot 70-minute eighth album features guest spots from A$AP Rocky, R. Kelly, André 3000, Pink, Lil Wayne, Cee Lo Green, Meek Mill, and others.

spot the odd man out

I was talking about how every blurb manages to give you an idea of what the album is like except for the T.I. blurb, which is just a list of names

lex pretend, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 22:09 (eleven years ago) link

they seriously need to start having the writers pen frontpage blurbs for their own reviews, or have the editor(s) put more thought into the summaries, because the 'randomly cherrypick and recontextualize words from the review' style has gotten so sloppy

ThePartyHater (some dude), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 22:11 (eleven years ago) link

or you could read the reviews

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 22:23 (eleven years ago) link

You could, but that wouldn't change how half-assed that blurb is or the negative impression it gives the site by being in a prominent spot on the front page.

next time they need to make a piece of architecture we can all dance around, because considering the elevating demand for shriveling supplies of attention, "ok" is almost worse than "unlistenable."
