the noz article is good altho i have issues w/ two parts, the first apparently i'm no longer allowed to talk about because i've written a lot about the subject so i cant weigh in or something, and the 2nd is that i don't understand how he doesn't see chicago's scene as a substantial subject worth talking about, considering it had like 8 major label signings & made up a significant portion of his list this year.

D-40, Friday, 28 December 2012 22:07 (eleven years ago) link

"nothing major" is almost like an overt attempt to come up with a worse name than "altered zones," i love it

fanute me or shoot me (some dude), Friday, 28 December 2012 22:08 (eleven years ago) link

he pretty explicitly says the column is just a selective look at "some of the individual fragments that the year produced," i don't think the lack of specific topics is meant as any kind of pointed exclusion

fanute me or shoot me (some dude), Friday, 28 December 2012 22:11 (eleven years ago) link

For a 'emerging visual culture' blog that site looks absolutely dull.

you take this stance on any new artist you hear about thru us on ilx first rather than via radio

D-40, Sunday, 30 December 2012 22:18 (eleven years ago) link

i think its a fair statement to make considering he wrote an article about how keef's career was over before it began on the wire earlier this year

D-40, Sunday, 30 December 2012 22:19 (eleven years ago) link

i'm a poptimist whore it's true but honestly i see nothing wrong with greeting new artists with skepticism and letting the work they put in win you over gradually, i actually change my mind about people all the time whereas i feel sometimes like dudes decide whether they like a rapper right off the bat and stick with that feeling for life

i mean i hear good and bad in the CK album, no idea which i will be leaning toward more a few months from now but i'm keeping an open mind to either

"he wrote an article about how keef's career was over before it began on the wire earlier this year"

I do so look forward to reading this article in The Annual Compendium Of Slights Towards Chief Keef That D-40 Has Imagined.

idgaf dude is airing out my professional name on a daily basis.

based grandpa (noz), Sunday, 30 December 2012 22:56 (eleven years ago) link

airing out? this isnt personal. im disagreeing w/ an element of your argument (after linking to & praising the bulk of it)

D-40, Sunday, 30 December 2012 23:05 (eleven years ago) link

its also not 'slights towards chief keef' like this is some 'defense' of the artist. im disagreeing w/ the assessment, i dont care if ultimately ppl do or dont like the art. im taking issue w/ the particular arguments made in describing it

D-40, Sunday, 30 December 2012 23:08 (eleven years ago) link

no, you have completely misrepresented one element of my argument and presented it as the entirety of the argument.

but lol at the wire ever running "an article about chief keef."

based grandpa (noz), Sunday, 30 December 2012 23:17 (eleven years ago) link

the artist who made one of their top ten rap albums of the year? lol

i likely agree with the parts of the argument i haven't brought up which is why i don't take issue w/ those specifically

i agree with some of noz's posts but not all of them -- will have a tumblr post about this tonight, perhaps will explain it some more on twitter tomorrow

...the rap that was uniquely propped up on indie PR machine/cool kid blog circuit this year was ephemeral, amateurish, or even outright depressing. I won't name names since you guys seem to love them. Or at least you love reblogging their photos on Tumblr and getting free drinks at their Heineken sponsored shows.

you really DO have to name names though, because otherwise you're the guy who simultaneously champions lil b and shits on rappers because they're popular on imageblogs. also the last time i checked danny brown's twitter background was a mosaic of Heineken bottles so.

i feel sometimes like dudes decide whether they like a rapper right off the bat and stick with that feeling for life

i tend to do the opposite; decide i like a rapper right off the bat and then forget about them

flopson, Monday, 31 December 2012 06:08 (eleven years ago) link

i agree w/ mccoll except that i think it's hilarious reading angry rap blogger shpiel in the p4k & appreciate how much license noz has to openly attack the site's readership. like while it's pretty horrifying to contemplate the innerworkings of the mind of an adult human who would write "just know that none of this stuff is notable or interesting or entertaining to anybody who was listening to rap music back before 2008," it's perversely comforting to imagine someone out there who feels they've just lost pitchfork as a friend

flopson, Monday, 31 December 2012 06:20 (eleven years ago) link

complex has done listicles for years but it seems like only since deef's been there that they do hopelessly meta listicles of "25 things everyone thinks about hip-hop (but nobody will say" and "25 most hated on rappers"

some dude, Monday, 31 December 2012 20:32 (eleven years ago) link

getting an smartphone is the first thing that's made me understand complex's layout at all. it would be nice if they had a non-mobile version of their site tho.

you can say it's ugly but how is it difficult to navigate? you click on the name of the feature you want and it takes you there

youre apparently better at communicating ambiguity

just to be clear, you realize i'm talking about the place his vocals land on the beat (as in which part of the beat) rather than the slightly 'off' rhythmic nature of his voice that somedude is talking about, right -- hes putting his vocals down in unconventional places w/in the rhythm of the track
