It's also that the breakbeat just doesn't QUITE fit on Miles, it feels like it's been fairly awkwardly cropped to fit in with everything else. The whole execution feels slapdash basically.

I'm not really feeling the EP as a whole, the songwriting feels a bit flimsy in comparison to Armor On, it's atmospheric enough but the whole thing gives off major stopgap vibes.

"riot" and "in your eyes" work so well as the album's two big, banging peaks; "northern lights" blows my mind the most (swear this needs to be the big single this year, that fucking beat and those fucking vox), "frequency" is gorgeously voluptuous in that "vibrate" kinda style, pretty much every beat in the first half (before it winds down into balladry) is stunning, and i have a huge soft spot for how ludicrously OTT "300" is with the fantasy imagery (has anyone itt actually seen the film 300?)

lex pretend, Monday, 14 January 2013 16:50 (eleven years ago) link

heh somewhat shamefully i took recourse to pad & pen

r|t|c, Monday, 14 January 2013 16:55 (eleven years ago) link

xp: i tried once. i was watching it at a friend's place and he turned it off cos i was making fun of it too much. true story.

anyway, this is pretty great so far! frequency is beautiful.

i need to figure out how i feel about these 'rock' drum sounds (tug of war, ode to you)

goole, Monday, 14 January 2013 17:00 (eleven years ago) link

The production is stunning, maybe even more so than Armor On, but the songwriting is seriously spotty. With the constant stream of "prepare for battle"/"I gave all I can"/"I'm gonna break down these walls"/"see my scars"/"you did this to me" messaging it's like she's just stealing Linkin Park lyrics

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 14 January 2013 18:08 (eleven years ago) link

This album's length really works in its favor; this is a satisfying one to lose yourself in. So much beautiful empty space, especially in that final stretch

Evan and I'm Gettin' It (Evan R), Monday, 14 January 2013 18:13 (eleven years ago) link

yeah it's not quite as sprawling as Last Train To Paris but it's probably more immersive.
