Decided to dig out the old Gameboy again. First 3 attempts: 47,184 then 163,085 then 329,444. Confident I can get back up to the 400k mark soon...

CraigG, Sunday, 30 December 2012 15:56 (eleven years ago) link

I have a sore neck from leaning over the gameboy, but 179 lines for 375,748.

CraigG, Monday, 31 December 2012 00:02 (eleven years ago) link

my ex didn't believe me i could play tetris "basically indefinitely" and got very up in arms about making me prove it, that was one of my least fun videogaming experiences ever

attempt to look intentionally nerdy, awkward or (thomp), Tuesday, 1 January 2013 17:12 (eleven years ago) link

i got 372,000 or so from only 161 lines, 400k is surely just around the corner.

(i sure hope my supervisor accepts that it would be a waste of my real natural talents to be writing a chapter instead of playing tetris.)

Merdeyeux, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 01:01 (eleven years ago) link

Good score! By comparison, I just got ~220k from 192 lines. It was basically a clean-up battle from start to finish. If you start at level 9, you should (in a perfect world) be able to reach 300K by the time it levels up to 10 at 100 lines, as you get ~12K per 4-line thingy. Pretty unlikely of course...

CraigG, Saturday, 5 January 2013 11:18 (eleven years ago) link

oof, 202 lines for 468,619. Suck it, Phil S Strahl. Still shy of Wozniak though...

How do you actually get twin galaxies to verify this stuff? Do you have to repeat it at a tournament, king of kong style? Or can you send in videos etc?

JimD, Saturday, 5 January 2013 17:53 (eleven years ago) link

Video of you switching the gameboy on and playing a game iirc

You guys have seen the amazing Not Tetris 2? It's really pretty funny.

Not Tetris 2 is the spiritual successor of the classic Tetris mixed with physics. The result is a fun spinoff in which blocks are no longer bound to the usual grid. Blocks can be rotated and placed at any angle, resulting in a complete mess if not careful.

218 lines must have been a good score, too? Stupid fast above the 200 mark. I finally got Tetris for the NES, so will see if my skillz are transferable. If not I can just blame the controller, at least.

i am most definitely the greatest doctor mario player I know (at one point I was in the Wii top 25 or whatever, but those damn Japanese are basically unbeatable)

frogbs, Monday, 11 March 2013 15:26 (eleven years ago) link

i used to think i was good at dr. mario until i played with some stoners who were just insane (speed on high, always starting at the highest level).

queeple qua queeple (Jordan), Monday, 11 March 2013 15:28 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i wish i'd made a note of the score. i didn't realise 218 was pretty good. it was the only time i ever got about 200, and yes it was crazy.

caek, Monday, 11 March 2013 15:30 (eleven years ago) link

I was never very good at the high speed/level 20 game where the challenge is basically to finish at all. The online version plays at level 5 or 6 so the whole challenge is comboing your opponent and not getting wrecked by theirs. It's a ranked system and once you get to a certain level your opponents essentially make no mistakes and play faster than I do so there's nothing to exploit, you either get lucky with your combos or you lose. And yes I am aware that most of these people are 13 year olds :(

frogbs, Monday, 11 March 2013 15:35 (eleven years ago) link

Tetris Attack is like crack to me. Tetris for Gameboy or NES, heroin. I've taken neither but the addictive properties are appropriate.

in college in the early 90s i knew a dude (with a curiously small head) who once played tetris until his score reached whatever power of 2 where the game no longer kept score

took a while for us to notice but then he began screaming that he'd won tetris, and tbh i could not gainsay him

mookieproof, Wednesday, 31 March 2021 23:40 (three years ago) link

we later named a cat, who also had a curiously small head, after him

the cat's actual owner did not appreciate it

this thread is reminding me of KLAX. so of course i looked up the klax wikipedia entry which contains this gem:

Mike Mika, who was working on the Game Boy Color version of the game, placed a hidden wedding proposal inside it. It took his then girlfriend three years to uncover the proposal.

LRT: Hamster just announced this themselves: Tetris The Grand Master's coming to Arcade Archives for PS4 & Switch on December 1🇯🇵 https://t.co/c9vFLJN87H

— GSK | https://cohost.org/gosokkyu (@gosokkyu) November 22, 2022

tonight's Arcade Archives stream included a msg from Arika's Mihara about next week's title, Tetris The Grand Master, in which he describes himself as an "lag cop" & expresses his gratitude/apologies to all involved for enduring his overbearing dickishness while policing the port https://t.co/3CIiKyc3kx

— GSK | https://cohost.org/gosokkyu (@gosokkyu) November 24, 2022

he also mentions how TGM series producer Harashima ran point on the Arika side and "if he says it's okay, it's okay"—afaik Harashima is the legendary player jin8, the first to achieve GM rank in both the world and classic modes of TGM3, among other feats

how old is that kid who beat it? like 14? I've always noticed that speed runners are often very young, something tells me my fingers couldn't keep up with the 'roll' method for more than 30 seconds at my age

i went out on a date with a 21-year-old (yeah once i found out she was 21 that was the end of that) a couple weeks ago who's super into the tetris speedrunning community. retro gaming in particular seems to hold a strong appeal for young speedrunners, especially the queer autistic ones.

(re: queer speedrunners, it sure can't hurt that the classic tetris world championship is hosted here in PDX - it's the highlight of the portland retro gaming festival.)

Kate (rushomancy), Wednesday, 3 January 2024 15:45 (three months ago) link

I almost wonder if the teenage years are the physical peak for speedrunners, like once you hit 20 maybe you can't move your fingers like that, I dunno. I thought about this playing one of the new Mario Party games which re-used a bunch of old minigames and there are some button mashers where I was like, hmmmm I used to be a lot better that this

frogbs, Wednesday, 3 January 2024 15:49 (three months ago) link

I think it's more that when you're a teen you can prioritize speedrunning goals as the most important thing in your life - you can dedicate yourself to hobbies like that because you have the literal time and because you have that youthful passion that drives you in those years. But yes definitely helps to have those quick youthful reflexes!

yeah it took me seeing a lot of people transition before i was able to figure shit out, one of them was narcissa wright

it's been awesome seeing the community evolve, i started following TASes when morimoto's SMB3 video came out around '03 and since then we've all just gotten gayer and gayer

showed my 9 year old son the video of the kid beating it (well, the last 4 minutes of it) and he now has a new hero, it's great

we play this version of Tetris on the Switch called "Tetris 99"...its a battle style game that imo is way too complicated, kinda underscores what a perfect game Tetris is, it commands your full attention at all times
