except Don't You Evah

... which is actually a cover of a Natural History song.

Gimme Fiction has some great minimalist grooves, like bits of Can cut into really neat edible Texas garage chunks.

My most listened lately is Series Of Sneaks, the sound quality is amazing, especially on headphones.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 4 February 2009 09:50 (fifteen years ago) link

I love all the Spoon albums I've got, but A Series Of Sneaks is just incredible.

ASOS > GaGaGaGaGa > Gimme Fiction > Girls Can Tell > Kill the Moonlight

nate woolls, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 09:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Giving it a go, and yeah it's got something. Liking the 14 tracks in 33 mins aesthetic.

A Series Of Sneaks is a weird one to get your head around. It took me 2 or 3 listens to really "get" it, because it seems like every song has got one really catchy verse, one really catchy chorus, and that's it.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 10:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Girls Can tell & Kill The Moonlight are both really good, too. Think I might prefer KTM over GCT, but only just. I own Telephono but haven't listened enough to it, or Soft Effects & Love ways.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 4 February 2009 10:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Everything they've done since Telephono (which is like an apprentice record) is great, and worth your time, honest.

I'll probably go Cherry Bomb, but Eddie's Ragga is a wicked track that will probably not get the love here--but that bassline!

Safe Boating is No Accident (G00blar), Wednesday, 4 February 2009 10:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Soft Effects is really worth a listen if you dig their earlier stuff. I haven't heard Love Ways or Telephono though.

davek_00, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 12:54 (fifteen years ago) link

"Don't You Evah."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 14:09 (fifteen years ago) link

i really liked KTM, and to a slightly lesser extent GCT, but this is the one that finally made me a believer. underdog, target, black like me, don't you evah, finer feelings (Commercial Appeal shout out lol), are all awesome, but i gotta go with cherry bomb.

threw a vote to 'black like me'

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 14:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Love Spoon! What most impresses me about them is that they seem much more competent in the studio than other bands. Their recordings always sound amazing, and they know how to use the studio as an instrument.

Uhh...Japanese Cigarette Case.

brightscreamer, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 14:22 (fifteen years ago) link

after 547 listens, the ghost of you lingers.

Zeno, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 15:13 (fifteen years ago) link

It's not my favorite, but "Rhythm & Soul" sounds great right now (literally and figuratively).

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 16:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Black Like Me.

Simon H., Wednesday, 4 February 2009 16:23 (fifteen years ago) link

I own Telephono but haven't listened enough to it, or Soft Effects & Love ways.

Speaking as an Austinite who got into Spoon around the time Telephono was released, Soft Effects is head and shoulders above the other two here. Great all the way through, not a second wasted.

I saw a Spoon show a couple years ago where the first encore was Soft Effects, front to back, it was fucking great...

ilxor, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 16:39 (fifteen years ago) link

This is an easy one for me Don't You Evah.

Jim, Thursday, 5 February 2009 00:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Sooooo wrong. It's just a nice little ditty! Everything else on this album is either fraught with emotional tension, or buoyant and air-punchingly fun.

talk me down off the (ledge), Thursday, 5 February 2009 00:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Nah, "Don't You Evah" and "Black Like Me" are the only ones that hint at something dark.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 5 February 2009 00:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Really don't hear it in Don't You Evah. What About Japanese Cigarette case? The long long instrumental build up to the chorus which just ratchets up the tension? And then 'let all my memories be gone', something that would rather be forgotten = something dark.

talk me down off the (ledge), Thursday, 5 February 2009 00:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Just listening to Rhythm and Soul and heard a great little detail I hadn't noticed before, at 2:55 (and a few times before but not as clearly), two tiny snippets of cut up and cut off vocal echoes. Barely noticeable in passing but now I hear them I think they provide a little sinister edge.

talk me down off the (ledge), Thursday, 5 February 2009 00:29 (fifteen years ago) link

"Finer Feelings," but for me this album is a total A+, I adore every second of it, gets better w/every play, etc.

Matos W.K., Thursday, 5 February 2009 02:17 (fifteen years ago) link

^^^ yes, this.

nate woolls, Thursday, 5 February 2009 07:21 (fifteen years ago) link

Finer Feeling & Black like me are by far the most played songs on my ipod, with playcounts in the high 40s. I've had times, when listening to the album in my car, that I've replayed those last two songs 5 or 6 times in a row.

Lee Bontecou (the cover star) is actually a woman, FYI. Awesome sculptor.

stringbot, Sunday, 8 February 2009 01:13 (fifteen years ago) link

"Ghost" vs "Black Like Me" imo

voted "Black Like Me"

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 8 February 2009 01:26 (fifteen years ago) link

i decided to be boring and vote "you got yr cherry bomb" - this is maybe my least favorite album by them but pound-for-pound maybe the best band of the decade? best produced rock band of the decade at least

your infinity in you is mad lifted (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 8 February 2009 02:05 (fifteen years ago) link

great thread, a good example of why ILM is the best music board on the net.

Bee OK, Sunday, 8 February 2009 06:43 (fifteen years ago) link

did you think they were good not great until you realized that you had been listening to them way too much for you not to be a mega spoon fan?

cuz that's what im at right about now.

still happens to me w/ them

Underdog video is a great brag on this band's style and talents:

Voting the minimalist The Ghost Of You Lingers.

Wow, didn't expect such a blowout here.

ilxor, Monday, 9 February 2009 05:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, I'm really surprised by that.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 9 February 2009 09:50 (fifteen years ago) link

On an album as good as this, it's a shame any song has to come last.

nate woolls, Monday, 9 February 2009 09:57 (fifteen years ago) link

wtf?
rhythm and soul is awesome!

Zeno, Monday, 9 February 2009 12:58 (fifteen years ago) link

^Yeah, and I like Eddie's Raga a lot too. I can't believe 3 votes for "Cigarette Case" (my only meh moment on teh awesome rekkid) and none for those two.

"The Underdog" turns up prominently in the new "Spider-man" movie, which is pretty, well, prominent placement for a Merge act.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 11:34 (six years ago) link

GAx5 is on Merge, but Spoon are back on Matador these days.

DavidLeeRoth, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 13:55 (six years ago) link

And ... ?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 14:04 (six years ago) link

....so I wouldn't consider them a Merge act if they're signed to a different label.

DavidLeeRoth, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 15:30 (six years ago) link

I'm more shocked that it has been 10 years.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 16:50 (six years ago) link

Still such a great album and agree that it will still sound great after 50 years.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 16:52 (six years ago) link

xpost That's splitting hairs. The album is on Merge, the song is on Merge, Merge getting paid, close enough.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 17:14 (six years ago) link

I owe Spoon for inspiring my blog title.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 11 July 2017 17:18 (six years ago) link

Better that than experience.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 17:24 (six years ago) link

Damn, cherry bomb really ran away with this one. I would've picked don't make me a target, which has a truly masterful build, but i could've voted for like 6 or 7 others.

voodoo chili, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 17:57 (six years ago) link

Rhthm & Soul wuz robbed.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 11 July 2017 18:46 (six years ago) link

Love this album so much. Finer Feelings would've gotten my vote.

Marty8501 (Marty Innerlogic), Tuesday, 11 July 2017 18:47 (six years ago) link

i think today i would pick "Black Like Me."
