THREE Jesus and Mary Chain songs in the Top 20? And they're all pretty much the same frickin' song!

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 20 December 2012 02:36 (eleven years ago) link

"Addicted to Love", although if #44's Randy Travis had gotten higher, I would have voted for it.

jetfan, Thursday, 20 December 2012 04:20 (eleven years ago) link

First time I've opened one of these threads, looked at the #1 on the list, and thought it would probably be lying to vote for anything else.

THE NATIONS YOUTH DANCED TO THE MACARANA (innocent) (zachlyon), Thursday, 20 December 2012 06:26 (eleven years ago) link

pretty positive i'm the only one voting for "The Show" here

frogbs, Thursday, 20 December 2012 06:28 (eleven years ago) link

Amusingly, the artists I couldn't find on US Spotify were Kate Bush, USA for Africa and Artists United Against Apartheid. So I ain't gonna find Sun City, I guess. (Not that anyone's voting for that or "We Are The World" anyway. I assume.)

I love this list a LOT less than prior years. Kind of a two-way race between Tears for Fears and Sonic Youth here, with the 'Mats a close third and Kate Bush, The Cure and Husker Du all runners-up.

DJP - you left TENOR SAW off that list. I don't even know what to say.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 20 December 2012 14:58 (eleven years ago) link

Too hard. Think I'm going for Wayne Smith. Sorry Kate, J&MC, Sonic Youth, Madonna et al.

emil.y, Thursday, 20 December 2012 16:16 (eleven years ago) link

voted 'west end girls'. if it had been 'cloudbusting' rather than those two kate songs then i'd prob have gone for that.

Good stuff here, Siouxsie over Kate, though I thought "Cities In Dust" came out in 86?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 21 December 2012 03:19 (eleven years ago) link

I remember living through this year and thinking it was boring, but this list looks better than 1984's.

1: Lisa Lisa
2. Madonna
3. Kate Bush, "Running Up That Hill"
4. Siouxsie

Josefa, Friday, 21 December 2012 07:38 (eleven years ago) link

I meant Madonna, "Into the Groove" of course

Josefa, Friday, 21 December 2012 07:41 (eleven years ago) link

Seriously, if you were driving around listening to the radio in the summer of '85 you'd be hearing stuff like "St. Elmo's Fire" by John Parr and "Go For Soda" by Kim Mitchell and "Power of Love" by Huey Lewis. It wasn't a good time.

Josefa, Friday, 21 December 2012 07:54 (eleven years ago) link

"Go for Soda"!

how's life, Friday, 21 December 2012 14:29 (eleven years ago) link

1985 was the first year where i discovered my music. before this year it was just pop radio type of stuff or what my friends (at the time) listened to. this was the year i started to buy records. a brand new world opened up and i was hooked. i liked music before but now i loved music because for the first time it really was mine.

Going to have to go with "Don't You (Forget About Me)." One of the best drum sounds in history. Love the drum machine & synth version in THE BREAKFAST CLUB, as well.

Tyler Burns (burns46824@yahoo.com), Sunday, 23 December 2012 01:55 (eleven years ago) link

Voted to Whitney, for pure pop pleasure.

so i said: "Running Up That Hill" (which knowing ILM, will probably walk in this poll).

:-)

Bee OK, Tuesday, 25 December 2012 02:02 (eleven years ago) link

which, truth be told, i forgot about "West End Girls" after posting that remark, i thought maybe it would give Kate Bush a run for her money.
