Okami Thread

Possibly the most genuinely beautiful game on any platform, in any generation. It's like a cross between a cartoon and a living inkbrush painting. In addition to the visuals the gameplay is solid, varied, with clever mechanics, a huge varied world and a pretty decent fairy-tale story. The only vexation was the use of obnoxious Simlish - style voices instead of pure text or recorded dialogue, but that's a minor quibble. - Matt D

had an urge to play through FES the other day but too much backlog to get through, already played original PS2 version & PSP version (which was disappointing, a lot of the atmosphere of the game felt like it was missing)

i'd really like to play through 4 again and was thinking about getting the psp version because i thought it had implemented the feature where you can choose what abilities get transferred onto your personas as you're fusing them - that only would save me so much time

Can't quite figure out the top 15 - A pair of Metal Gears, a pair of GTAs, Resident Evil 4, Devil May Cry, God of War, Prince of Persia - Sands of Time, FFXII, Lego Star Wars, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, Persona 4, Dragon Quest VII: this all seems fairly sturdy, but it only leaves one spot for some sports game I don't give a shit about, and I can't be that lucky, surely?

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 07:53 (eleven years ago) link

We've had no Katamaris yet.

Also wouldn't be surprised if RE4 didn't make the cut, I think of it as a Gamecube game first and foremost, and I can't be the only one.

JimD, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 09:13 (eleven years ago) link

I didn't know the Vita version of 4 let you pick skills like that, almost makes me wanna get a Vita (then I remember I am $broke$)

Still yet to beat P4 (I actually started it up again a few months ago via emu) but P3 I did beat (albeit on the PSP so it's a bit of a cheat... I think this is why I didn't rate the PS2 version as high?). It completely sucked me in. Like, emotionally. Which is super-embarrassing to admit really bc I don't typically think of game stories (or even THAT game's story) as, uh, well written... at all... ever. In spite of that the combination of fighty stuff and social stuff and the tick-tick-tick of the calendar slowly dropping off added a desperation to the social links (all of which I did not complete despite some FAQing around towards the middle/end). Almost decided to go through & beat it again on account of that. Realized I did NOT have the time for that though, because I spent far too much time on the first one. Lying in bed and skipping school, playing all day type shit. It was a depressing/amazing winter.

After playing 4 and looking back, probably the best balance between cinematics and gameplay of any game of the series. Funny, interesting, gives the impression that Kojima is hiding around the corner waiting for you to try something different. - Angus

I think this is my favorite Metal Gear title in retrospect, and I have trouble articulating why. A great balance of actual game to play and cutscene madness? Varied and interesting environments (as compared to 2, ugh)? The ability to CQC my way to victory for the entire game? Some of the absolute best boss battles of all time (the End, the Boss). OTT action film homage Cold War spy era madness? It all just gels together into something that's more than the sum of its parts. - Matt D

Prince of Persia thread

The combat is terrible but moving about it just brilliant. Basic running, jumping, swinging about is genuinely satisfying - it's an accomplishment just getting across a room in high style. The rewind mechanic was a great step in the direction of introducing mechanics that encourage players to take risks, experiment, etc without being punished, but with limits. And the protagonist was a cheerful, positive dude! - Matt D

Oh and since all of these games have already come up in the poll, here's a couple of fun facts.

Most vaguely-liked games: (at least 3 votes, lowest average points per ballot)

1. Red Faction (3 votes, avg ~2.7 points/vote)
2. Dance Dance Revolution (3 votes, avg. 6 points/vote)
3. Rez (7 votes, avg. ~6.9 points/vote)

Most intensely-liked games: (at least 3 votes, highest average points per ballot)

1. God Hand (4 votes, avg ~13.3 points)
2. Singstar (4 votes, avg. ~12.8 points)
3. Dragon Quest VIII (5 votes, avg. 12.2 points)

The thing about combat in Sands of Time is that every enemy is weak to a certain combat move, but you can also just slash them until they stop blocking. Neither solution is particularly fun.

I like the atmospheres/cities. This was the last original/traditional FF game for ps2. The graphics were really great by this time. I do get tired of holding back to level up in all RPGs but if you like RPGs you can put up with it. The Gambit system could of had more options. I liked doing all the extra junk like finding Rare monsters. I got right to the end of this game and never beat it but I do that a lot with RPGs. I've never beaten a Final Fantasy game. - Captainlorax

I like how this game is unapologetically Japanese and at the same time eschews most of the FF-style conventions we've come to expect from JRPG imports. Half of the setting is rooted in small-town reality, the protagonists are a Scooby gang of normal kids with normal problems, the dungeons are challenging, compact and varied. It's terribly huge and engrossing. Give me another one of these, please. - Matt D

Ties gameplay in really clever ways to one of the most engrossing and compelling stories I've played through. When it came to leaving Yukiko at the end I was :( - if

tiniest homeless (jjjusten), Thursday, 20 December 2012 16:50 (eleven years ago) link

not that surprised, i've heard good things generally, and it was the backdrop of all the Ivalice games (FFTA and so on). but since it was near the end of the system, i guess it doesn't have as much lingering hype for it - FFX is still a more highly valued game

ILG Player's Club plays PSYCHONAUTS

Easily one of the best platform games ever. The inside-the-brain level so much better than when Max Payne tried to do the trippy psyche missions. - Craig G

It's a game where the gameplay is the least attractive part. Sure, it's a reasonably solid platformer, but the other trappings are the real draw. The score's great, the voice acting never hits a wrong note, the world / stage design is brilliant and it's genuinely hilarious, which is a real rarity in an age where most games are serious business. - Matt D

Escort quests are the absolute worst in games, but Ico really made it work. I played a demo that was on a coverdisc and was blown away, so just had to get this when it came out. Such beautiful scenery, and although the game was frustrating at times, it was just a great little adventure. - Craig G

Might be in danger of splitting the vote here, I never played the original game. But this was perfect anyway, most memeorable was the giddy sense of escalation, as you went from paperclips to dogs to houses to mountains to planets - it seemed to take in every category of *thing* in the world, and then encouraged you to try to roll up every last one. Vice City!
POO: GTA Vice City Soundtrack

Still my favourite GTA (and I love all the GTAs). Partly I think because the world map was just the right size and contained just the right amount of stuff to do, with things to find around every corner (and no big open expanses of nothing as there are in too many open worlds these days). But mostly because of the soundtrack and the setting and the sense of place and time. - JimD

Challops time: The best GTA, imho. I know people like SA more, but I just thought the size, scope, and - most of all - the music in GTA:VC was the peak for the series. - CraigG

The new San Andreas thread
Best San Andreas radio station

More GTA! Not quite as good as Vice City, but pretty close. It was the start of there being too much to do in the GTA games, and the start of me losing interest a little. - CraigG

KATAMARI DAMACY, YOU ARE A TREAT!!!!1!

A central mechanic so ingenious and fun that the whole experience seems to roll naturally out from there. - if

Such a simple idea, so satisfying and weird and kooky too. A really therapeutic game too. - CraigG

Ico / Shadow of the Colossus

A sense of scale and achievement like little else and a totally awesome twist that turned an inobtrusive and minimal story on its head. - if

A strong argument for the idea that a huge world with a massive cast and a large population isn't required for depth or engagement. Sparse, empty landscapes and slow, plodding beasts make you feel worse about jumping on something's head then you ever have before. Sparse, meaningful murder. - Angus

Shadow of the Colossus is one of my all time favourite games, and one of only a handful of games where I find myself wandering around humming the music (even in the years and years between when I completed it a couple of times on PS2 and buying this on PS3). I nommed this in the C&P, so I'm doing so again for the dedicated PS2 poll. - CraigG

Why slog through hordes of lesser minions when every encounter can be an epic, vast in scope conflict? Beautiful world design and dripping with atmosphere. Can't wait to see what this team delivers next. Also, this is a minor detail, but most horse-like horse in a game ever? - Matt D

Wau at Shadow of the Colossus beating Ico - I thought the single character thing held it back a lot more.

I never got too far in it but I would hardly say the game has only one character!

Jeez, so many of these have been on my to-do list for quite some time and this thread just makes me want to play them even more.

Word. I'm still ashamed of having never played Ico or Katamari.

Better now than ten years from now when we all have 48fps REAL-D MEGA TVS that are inexplicably not compatible with PS2s anymore :/

Has anyone had much success w/ PCSX2?

nicki mINOJ (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 21 December 2012 21:23 (eleven years ago) link

You need a pretty good computer (which I don't have). I hadn't fooled with it for a while until the other week when I couldn't sleep and installed the latest build and fooled around with it for a while. Only tried a few games (after ripping them from my discs with image burn) - a couple ran slow (for me), PES and Gran Turismo (unplayable), but Gradius V worked perfectly (solid 60 FPS etc). When I have time I'm definitely going to rip some more of my discs and see which games work. Perhaps someday I'll have a better computer.

I was playing Persona 4 on PCSX2 and I would say that it has been working "good enough" but not "perfect." But that game doesn't really have "action" per se so I'm not like missing any key frames/button presses/etc. I am playing on a computer that was pretty good when i built it 3-4 years ago.

i got a new pc last month and i was happy to finally be able to play policenauts on a ps1 emulator. i just tried zone of the enders with pcsx2 and it seemed to run just fine, now I just need a controller with analog sticks.

I am getting an XB360 controller bcz I have read they're p much the perfect PC emu controller, and I just bought a v solid laptop in July so I'm hoping I will be able to emulate some good shit.

This poll was fucking great btw. Thanks Will!

Yeah, I've been using pcsx2 recently to play through some of these. Some games have some glitches (e.g. in Jak and Daxter they have no eyes, just black craters). I get a bit of periodic slowdown on some games, but mostly they've been playable (high 40/50fps, and 2d games like Disgea get a solid 60fps). For reference, I have a Phenom 2 X6 2.7GHz and a Radeon 5770.

I'm using my PS3 controller through MotionJoy, which seems to work pretty great after a little bit of setup.
