The Moda Black comp is so good, esp. "Knee Deep In Louise", "How It Goes" and "Best In Show".

xps the juju and jordash album was sorta baffling at first, there are a lot of stylistic jumps and it wasn't exactly the deep house full length i was expecting BUT once it clicked i started loving it. seems rare for house producers to even try to cover this broad of a spectrum in one album, and jj&j definitely avoid mungolian jetset-style high-pitched maximalist goofiness or novelty when they go from say a murky almost sun araw-type jam sesh into subtle acid techno into woozy balearic stuff or w/e. it's similar to the terrence dixon album in that it's not easy to unpack but it definitely rewards every attempt at doing so

i love the juju & jordash album, it traverses a lot of different genres really naturally and none of it seems tossed off like they're just including non-tracky interludes to try to make an "album." the terrence dixon was too dissonant for me for the most part on first listen, i'll come back to it b/c everyone seems to love it, though. have you heard the mungolian jetset album from this year, though? b/c i really dislike the whole goofy maximalist thing, too, but mungodelics really surprised me.

kink feat rachel row - handmade (big ame-style techno)

holy shit this is great

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 17 December 2012 23:21 (eleven years ago) link

xp: guess i'm gonna listen to the juju & jordash record, then. those sprawling albums are usually kinda off-putting with all those stylistic changes being used withour any kind of context or w/e - just for the sake of it with a smart-ass attitude or something? dunno...

karl otm about mungodelics. with the exception of 'revolving door' and 'people on strong stuff' the album is good to great - even if somewhat forgettable in the long run (ie 'picazzo')

rusty_allen, Monday, 17 December 2012 23:24 (eleven years ago) link

yea i got a lot of mileage out of "toccata" and "smells like gasoline" and for some reason i haven't really given the rest of the album the same attention

i'm hearing "howling" for the first time and i was excited by the words "âme remix" but WHAT THE EFF IS THIS TERRIBLE SHIT >>>>>:(

lex pretend, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 11:44 (eleven years ago) link

I hadn't heard of or heard the Andres track either. Seems odd to see something so conservative (but not even pointedly so in the way that excites the pipecock brigade) so feted? I could def see it standing out in a set tho, doesn't really sound like much of the other house I hear recently, although I admittedly haven't been keeping up with that end of things. Seems like it would be pretty fun to dance to too.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 11:55 (eleven years ago) link

Damn why must you people ruin everything I love? New 4 U is wonderfully catchy tune. Is there really a Coldplay song better than Howling? If there is I haven't heard it.

So I guess I'm the only one with a soft spot for Nicki Minaj's Starships? I don't know why but I actually read some reviews and it seems like it was widely reviled as derivative of a variety of other mediocre dance pop songs, but to me there's just something about it...

viborg, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 12:08 (eleven years ago) link

I like Howling but I'm not sure I'd particularly want to dance to it. This end of dance music has had a soft spot for a fake Coldplay croon for a while - I'm thinking of the Supermayer remix of 'Heart's A Mess' by Gotye, half of what Apparat's done etc.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 12:22 (eleven years ago) link

the b-side of the kink record is good too:

fucking love "starships", wouldn't have thought to bring it up in this thread though

"pound the alarm" was less ubiquitously anthemic but probably better? idk if it's nicki's branding or nicki's charisma (or just nicki's shamelessness) that elevates her trashy commercial dance-pop over most other people's, but she makes it pretty amazing

lex pretend, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 15:12 (eleven years ago) link

damn, "new for u" tops the RA list as well...

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 18 December 2012 15:30 (eleven years ago) link

worst tracks on the RA list: howling, let it go, fur de liebe (sp.?)

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 18 December 2012 16:00 (eleven years ago) link

what's wrong with "let it go"?? amazing track, transcends even the tiredness of cut-up r&b vox

lex pretend, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 16:04 (eleven years ago) link

Fur De Liebe is really nice but Pantha Du Prince should sue.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 16:04 (eleven years ago) link

Xpost: interestingly the vocal sample is one of the things I dislike the most about that track. Sleep inducing. Overall the track just sounds bland. It belongs with the Hot Creation crops.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 18 December 2012 16:19 (eleven years ago) link

oh, well, i still think hot creations is probably about the best thing in dance atm, so we clearly differ on this

Josiah Alan, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 14:04 (eleven years ago) link

But for whatever reason I like Huxley better than the Hot Creations crew, feels a little closer to what I like about poppy garage tracks.

Josiah Alan, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 14:11 (eleven years ago) link

I swear Benediction reminds me more of Clivilles and Cole pre C+C Music Factory more than anything. Clivilles and Cole remixing a boy group.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=kOS5edZ6qBk#!

That kind of thing. It's been weird and a little fun seeing New Jersey style garage get big again, MK resurfacing and all that.

Josiah Alan, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 14:44 (eleven years ago) link

That Lone album is excellent, and Robert Hood is also really good. Thanks for turning me on to them! I also liked:

Lindstrom - Smallhans
John Talabot - fin
Sand Circles - Motor City
Geoff Barrow/Ben Salisbury - DROKK
DJ Rashad - Tek Life
Emeralds - Just to Feel Anything
Silent Servant - Negative Fascination

Mix-wise, I really enjoyed the Heiroglyphic Being FACT mix, also a bunch posted to the mixes thread (Optimo, Andy Weatherall of the top my head) were great.

Really need to hear the Andy Stott album...

Neil S, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 14:52 (eleven years ago) link

it's kinda strange to see ejeca's 'horizon' and bicep's '$tripper' getting all the props while their collab - 'you' - is mostly being ignored on these EOY. tho I love the 3, 'you' stands slightly above them - prob because of the central melody and vocal samples that give the song some kind of voyeuristic emptiness.

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Saturday, 29 December 2012 01:47 (eleven years ago) link

why does anyone prefer the mano le tough remix of simulation to the original, can anyone explain?

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Saturday, 29 December 2012 03:43 (eleven years ago) link

i mean, i generally really like mano le tough, but the remix of simulation just seems so bleh compared to the heavy, thick disco-funk of the original

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Saturday, 29 December 2012 03:46 (eleven years ago) link

neither are really as amazing as i first thought they were, but i do prefer the og

the candi staton/larse and maxxi soundsystem/herbert remixes i gleaned from this thread are just ruling my life right now
