"Last Time" is great

"Pay Me"... is not

what a bizarre pair of songs to pick out

r|t|c, Monday, 17 December 2012 22:08 (eleven years ago) link

yeah a mixtape "bonus track" being a non-standout prob doesn't mean very much

salute me or crut me (J0rdan S.), Monday, 17 December 2012 22:09 (eleven years ago) link

even beyond the ~attitude~ (which is AMAZING and has been so lacking of late, except it hasn't cuz it turns out everyone just ran to the comfort blanket of sad dudes this year) there's so much going on vocally and production-wise...she revels in her versatility here

lex pretend, Monday, 17 December 2012 22:09 (eleven years ago) link

can't get to datpiff to download so I'm going down Youtube in the order the songs are presented to me, which I recognize is going to give a pretty disjointed view of what this album is actually like

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Monday, 17 December 2012 22:10 (eleven years ago) link

she was probably more influential than ppl give her credit for in the long run

she probably introduced lots of white people to women talking about sex on record, i guess it might have been revelatory if you didn't listen to lil kim or trina

this shit needs a lady feature <3<3 'turn up on him' is a monster

tpp, Monday, 17 December 2012 22:11 (eleven years ago) link

I intuitively agree with you lex re sad dudes but who do you actually mean apart from the weeknd? or do you class frank ocean in that category also.

Tim F, Monday, 17 December 2012 22:12 (eleven years ago) link

yeah

maybe "mopey" is more apt than "sad", or maybe i just mean SLOW AND TORPID AND LACKING IN ENERGY, and you can chuck how to dress well and jeremih in there too

lex pretend, Monday, 17 December 2012 22:15 (eleven years ago) link

busta's verse on "last time" is so bizarrely out-of-character

lex pretend, Monday, 17 December 2012 22:16 (eleven years ago) link

the vague throwbackishness and the way she sings puts in mind some vocal midpoint between Elle Varner and Janelle Monae

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Monday, 17 December 2012 22:17 (eleven years ago) link

haha Jeremih has taken an epic aesthetic journey in your mind (xp)

some dude, Monday, 17 December 2012 22:17 (eleven years ago) link

'last time' doesn't sound that diff to something from that jeremih mixtape tbf to poor old jeremih

tpp, Monday, 17 December 2012 22:18 (eleven years ago) link

I'm kind of reacting to this the same way I reacted to Frank Ocean? I am enjoying listening to this but it's unlikely I'm going to go back to the songs I've heard so far to play them again except for "Last Time" and "360" (the other songs being "Pay Me", "Love Is A Losing Game", "You", "None Tonight"; I'm also assuming that the songs being presented to me by Youtube are the songs on this album since they were uploaded with the cover art, so I'll probably download this to listen to it in sequence at some point)

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Monday, 17 December 2012 22:21 (eleven years ago) link

are you 'having a hard time processing it'?

mookieproof, Monday, 17 December 2012 22:24 (eleven years ago) link

not really

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Monday, 17 December 2012 22:26 (eleven years ago) link

"On The One" is pretty nice, too

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Monday, 17 December 2012 22:27 (eleven years ago) link

AS SHANELL HERSELF SAYS HERE, "people have a hard time processing it when it's not packaged for the consumption of male entertainment, so they don't know quite what to do with it or how to place it or what to say, because surely a woman couldn't be intelligent enough to be making a point?"

Really resent some of the arguments at work here, and that this is being held up as some exemplary model of what female R&B should sound like in 2012. Women released so many great R&B albums that weren't completely ridiculous and that didn't open with desperate Azealia Banks knock offs

would strongly urge folks to totally disregard the last two tracks p much, bonuses they may be but their additional distraction downplays a seriously terrific lil album

'you' is a fine end besides

r|t|c, Monday, 17 December 2012 22:35 (eleven years ago) link

"On The One" is good. "Just For The Night" isn't.

fwiw as this goes on, I think it's a stronger effort than Frank Ocean

she was doing really well on "None Tonight" (love the tape stop effect) until the chorus.

OK. Re "Just For the Night," which I just heard again:

The Herbie Hancock-esque programming/scratching in the intro = fabulous. I didn't hear enough tension between her wan chorus and the rest of the song though, esp when the bridge teased me into thinking a banger was coming.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2012 00:39 (eleven years ago) link

i see, so it fails on the terms you arbitrarily invented for it

r|t|c, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 00:50 (eleven years ago) link

I'm not aware of other terms.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2012 00:57 (eleven years ago) link

an unhappy story told from two sides of lonely lies and love by proxy, appropriately set in a churning trudging strobing clubland that is a deliberately false impression of a good time and which approximates but never achieves fleeting release just the same way as its inhabitants do. alternatively its routine placidity as sad weary happiness that's just enough

but either way your exultant chorus, banger, tension would be in aid of what in the song?

r|t|c, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:15 (eleven years ago) link

I've got the brains, you've got the looks.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:19 (eleven years ago) link

would you like to give me a proper answer now or would dorothy perkins like to keep pretending she's dorothy parker?

r|t|c, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:24 (eleven years ago) link

All those things in aid of a song I'm not hearing but you do.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:29 (eleven years ago) link

you don't hear... the lyrics?

r|t|c, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:33 (eleven years ago) link

i mean if you have an alternative reading that you feel the performance or production inadequately dramatises i'd love to hear it

perhaps not if it's going to take 40 posts painstakingly extracting it from you though

r|t|c, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:38 (eleven years ago) link

The lyrics are sharp! I love the doctor bits. I was trying not to rely on lyrics though.

I mean, I hear what you're saying about exultant-verses/flat-chorus, willing herself to have a good time. I'm just not transported, although I'll listen to it again.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:44 (eleven years ago) link

I did hear a bit of Dawn Richards' cyber-erotic devastation in "Last Time" but she's bawdier, and that's a plus.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:47 (eleven years ago) link

dawn hasnt really crossed my mind at all with this, i guess when prompted i can see where the mentions come from on the face of it but shanell's viscerality completely takes dawn out the picture for me

r|t|c, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:57 (eleven years ago) link

kalenna though would certainly be viable

this is great for sure. need to have time to really dedicate to listening to it, though. so my proper thoughts will come in a day and a half.

and it didn't! though they complement each other nicely

The new mixtape is solid straight through and legit stunning in places. "Show Me," "Boy Stop Playin'," "Dedicated" and "So Good" are early highlights for me

Not sure if this is supposed to be "another side of Shanell" or a complete retcon of Nobody's Bitch, but the reinvention is really working for her. This is the best she's ever sounded.

Evan R, Friday, 7 June 2013 15:23 (ten years ago) link

haha just watched 'my button' again... hands down one of the best songs of the decade imo

have we discussed the female empowerment angle yet?

a reinvention that reuses multiple songs off nobody's bitch?

anyway this is pretty good, nothing's touching "catch me at the light" so far apart from maybe "boy stop playin" and it certainly doesn't have the whoa factor of nobody's bitch but i'm liking the sumptuousness and feeling. "catch me at the light" is sooooooo fantastic though, sorta likea response to terius' "fast car" type tracks
