Ugh, I was hoping to bury memories of Shanell somewhere in the trash bin with my download of Dedication 3. I've seen her live three times with Wayne and the Young Money entourage, and she's always the low light of the show. Like, worse than T-Streetz.

Evan R, Monday, 17 December 2012 21:19 (eleven years ago) link

"So Good" was imo the only Young Money song of 2012 that should have been a hit and wasn't

some dude, Monday, 17 December 2012 21:21 (eleven years ago) link

there's an interlude on this where she's in the middle of like a thinkpiece on ostracism with badu 'window seat' on in the background

still tho keep up the stand-up routine and/or useless shilling guys, good job

I want to like this, b/c there really is a need for strong women in R&B right now, but I just can't buy into the logic that any and all attitude is good attitude. I don't get why anybody would want to listen to this woman declare war on hoes and brag about how clean her candy is and crush Mountain Dew cans on her forehead for 50 minutes

Evan R, Monday, 17 December 2012 21:32 (eleven years ago) link

she doesnt do that

having given this a proper run i might, might, downgrade to... third? best of the year just cos it understandably runs out of zip a little in the final furlong ('you' is dope though)

I have listened to the album, and she actually does these things. Like, the last song is literally a chant about slapping hoes. The mixtape ends with her comparing a rival's pussy to a hallway in which a hotdog can be thrown. Those are her parting words.

AS SHANELL HERSELF SAYS HERE, "people have a hard time processing it when it's not packaged for the consumption of male entertainment, so they don't know quite what to do with it or how to place it or what to say, because surely a woman couldn't be intelligent enough to be making a point?"

even beyond the ~attitude~ (which is AMAZING and has been so lacking of late, except it hasn't cuz it turns out everyone just ran to the comfort blanket of sad dudes this year) there's so much going on vocally and production-wise...she revels in her versatility here

lex pretend, Monday, 17 December 2012 22:09 (eleven years ago) link

can't get to datpiff to download so I'm going down Youtube in the order the songs are presented to me, which I recognize is going to give a pretty disjointed view of what this album is actually like

i mean if you have an alternative reading that you feel the performance or production inadequately dramatises i'd love to hear it

perhaps not if it's going to take 40 posts painstakingly extracting it from you though

The lyrics are sharp! I love the doctor bits. I was trying not to rely on lyrics though.

I mean, I hear what you're saying about exultant-verses/flat-chorus, willing herself to have a good time. I'm just not transported, although I'll listen to it again.

I did hear a bit of Dawn Richards' cyber-erotic devastation in "Last Time" but she's bawdier, and that's a plus.

The cover got me in, reminds me of possibly 10 things that I'm probably recollecting wrongly.

And yeah the tone can be aggressive seeming but then more quiet and the wistful piano touches in so mopey too. From a listen there are more mooods once you go further in.

The 'speaks...' stuff in it is great. Gives the record a shape.

a reinvention that reuses multiple songs off nobody's bitch?

anyway this is pretty good, nothing's touching "catch me at the light" so far apart from maybe "boy stop playin" and it certainly doesn't have the whoa factor of nobody's bitch but i'm liking the sumptuousness and feeling. "catch me at the light" is sooooooo fantastic though, sorta likea response to terius' "fast car" type tracks
