i consider ilx a rogue-like

Mordy, Monday, 17 December 2012 20:04 (six years ago) link

i kinda feel like we're in a rogue-like renaissance what with off the top of my head spelunky, binding of isaac, FTL...

Mordy, Monday, 17 December 2012 20:07 (six years ago) link

wtf I don't know either Binding of Isaac or FTL. Are they good?

Since I had a major roguelike victory around Christmas 2010 I have laid off the genre (and playing games in general)

Binding of Isaac is great, but not trad roguelike. Kinda a roguelike + zelda hybrid w/ sadistic biblical references. FTL is fun but not alltime. worth a look at tho

Mordy, Monday, 17 December 2012 20:12 (six years ago) link

A few other semi-recent rougelike titles...

It IS weird though, how Area 2 is like twenty times harder than Area 1. Ice levels were always easier to survive. I don't think I made it to City of Gold, but I haven't picked up the game in a while.

Binding of Isaac is fun but being done in Flash the system performance is kinda awful (at least on my oldish iMac). Still, there is a lot of stuff in there to keep you interested, unlockable characters, crazy amount of random unidentified power-ups, etc.

I played a tiny bit of Dungeons of Dredmor but wasn't really sucked in

Nhex, Monday, 17 December 2012 20:30 (six years ago) link

i would have been all over this thread a few months ago. i haven't played spelunky in a while. i kinda really sucked at the ice levels! only got to level 4 once iirc.

What was the name of that fairly realistic looking first-person roguelike? PC only?

The tutorial took forever. I keep meaning to go back to it...

Are you thinking of Legend of Grimrock? It's not a rougelike, but...

ive been to area 4 twice since yday.

ice levels are MUCH harder than the previous area why because pit of doom below everything

ropes, bro. ropes! also looking down a lot.

Nhex, Monday, 17 December 2012 22:38 (six years ago) link

How high are your guys' high-scores? I haven't played Spelunky in forever but I'd be curious if my scores were even close

Panaïs Pnin (The Yellow Kid), Monday, 17 December 2012 23:36 (six years ago) link

152,000 is the best I've done so far.

Someday maybe I'll beat the game, then I'll start thinking about getting to the city of gold and trying to break 1,000,000. I also have still yet to go to the worm world. One of the many things that make this game so great, is the many different ways you can play it... for score, for survival, for speed, to kill shop keepers, etc...

JCL, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 17:10 (six years ago) link

The shopkeeper's seemingly PCP-induced mania is still terrifying. Especially when you accidentally kill one with a boulder or explosive, and then you're fighting all of them for the rest of the game...

Nhex, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 17:57 (six years ago) link

FTL is so hard. I can get to the final boss (on easy only!) but can only beat his first form.

Mordy, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 23:45 (six years ago) link

Scores don't seem to matter that much cuz it basically only counts your money, which you can spend

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 02:54 (six years ago) link

that's why they matter. you have to be circumspect about what you spend your money on

Mordy, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 03:04 (six years ago) link

For me the challenge is how far I can get. I guess I also collect money for shortcuts. But life is about more than that maaaaan

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 03:06 (six years ago) link

life is about having the highest score in difficult video games

Mordy, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 03:19 (six years ago) link

Accidentally just set a new high score, also accidentally crushed by Olmec on 4-4

JCL, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 04:22 (six years ago) link

ftr i am the boss of ftl fwiw

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 15:34 (six years ago) link

u beat it? i think i had a big breakthrough last night when i realized how devastating boarding party strategy can be. i was rolling around w/ an amazing ship very early when i accidentally left my boarding party on a ship that FTL'd away. OOPS.

Mordy, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 15:39 (six years ago) link

yeah, i beat it with 2 different ships before i had to stop playing it, on normal both times. i was comboing 1-2 low maintenance regular guns to take shields out and then hit with beam weapon, trying to focus on their guns and shields. power also into shields and manoeuvre and not much else. made sure i had numbers on crew but never bothered with boarding myself. honestly though, while these things helped, you can't do anything but play enough times over until you get a few breaks and a decent start.

PC/Mac

Mordy, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 16:22 (six years ago) link

gotta give props to whoever made it, i think that is the only website for a video game in existence that features zero screenshots

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 16:46 (six years ago) link

ha - i hadn't noticed that, but you're right

Nhex, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 16:51 (six years ago) link

thank you for making me feel inadequate roberto, u inspired me and i finally beat the game! (on easy)

Mordy, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 21:07 (six years ago) link

How long does it take to play through & win a game of FTL (is it comparable to Spelunky i.e. under 20 minutes or so)?

JCL, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 21:24 (six years ago) link

yay mord

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 21:47 (six years ago) link

true. but I think I'm having a panic attack contemplating re-doing some of those tunnel man fetch quests.

original bgm, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 19:03 (six years ago) link

Hah - I still have to do that damn one where you drag the key from the first world to the fire temple

Nhex, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 15:07 (six years ago) link

yeah, that was exactly what I was thinking of. very satisfying when I finally pulled it off but a nightmare for sure.

i think without a gamepad, playing this looks pointless

I've never played with a gamepad. Got as far as the temple in the original free version. It might feel weird to use a gamepad now.

bamcquern, Sunday, 1 December 2013 00:40 (five years ago) link

i played a million hours of this w/o a gamepad and i loved it

socki (s1ocki), Sunday, 1 December 2013 00:43 (five years ago) link

okay. maybe i'm just not a pc/mac gamer.
dl'd the demo to ps3 and have enjoyed it but this kind of precision platforming is mostly out of my touch gaming wheelhouse these days

o man this game is so MEAN

four bucks for ps3 this week, will be getting it

tempted to rebuy for that price

Nhex, Tuesday, 10 December 2013 18:40 (five years ago) link

so good on vita

so hard

Just popping in to say that after playing the game pretty steadily lately (since they added the daily challenges to ps3/vita), I have FINALLY got to hell. Feels good (even if i only got to 5-2 because I had no bombs and only two hearts when i entered 5-1). I was so close so many times, so to finally get there is such a relief.

JCL, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 06:25 (five years ago) link

That would be more exciting news if I'd ever gotten further than the third stage (and only rarely, at that) of the original game.

Just eat a hamburger, it'll hit the spot. (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 29 August 2018 17:42 (eleven months ago) link

heh, i'm with you. however, i've only played the original game on my mac, using a keyboard. so i'm optimistic that using a real controller will help quite a bit.

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 29 August 2018 17:46 (eleven months ago) link

did they ever port the improved XBLA/PSN version to Mac? i only played the OG freeware version on Mac

Nhex, Thursday, 30 August 2018 04:02 (eleven months ago) link

and personally i never made it to the end either, which also dampens my enthusiasm

Nhex, Thursday, 30 August 2018 04:02 (eleven months ago) link

Never finished it either, but I got to the point where I could reach the temple more often than not. And did get into Hell a couple of times. Dipped back into the original last week actually and I still love it (even though I've forgotten how to make any progress at all). If the soundtrack is by whoever did the first then that'll be enough to convince me to play 2.

No mention of a handheld release though - I quite liked the original on X360 and PC but it was the Vita port which really got its claws into me. Just works so much better as a pick-up-for-10-minutes kind of thing, which never feels right on a full console. Vita port seems unlikely this time round though so I guess I'm going to hold out for a Switch release?

JimD, Thursday, 30 August 2018 10:26 (eleven months ago) link

I never got past the first level, lol. I remember getting this as part of the games with gold promotion. I only gave it a few hours attention, but that was enough to realize I suck at games.
