and who can tell me how to survive area 3
Area 3, the ice caverns, is a lot easier than area 2. One thing that helps a lot is to get a compass (since it points to the exit). In area 3, making sure to have a few extra ropes, in case you get stuck towards the bottom and need to get higher is always good too. Ropes are maybe more important than bombs on those levels. By the time I'm there, I've pretty much stopped worrying about collecting money (since you are unlikely to see another shop) or rescuing maidens, and just try to get to the exit as fast as possible avoiding as much of the level as possible.

Oh man I'll have to start playing again!― Mordy
― Mordy
I've barely beat your score, I think by 10,000 or so. When you made it to the City of Gold did you not have any bombs or something? I think your score would be higher. I've never been there myself, but haven't really tried. I've also stopped playing for score ages ago. I've just been desperately trying to beat the game the long way, which I haven't been able to do. Or the short way for that matter. 4-4 is as far as I've gotten despite over 800 tries :(

― Mordy, Monday, 17 December 2012 18:48 (eleven years ago) link
I don't really like your standard iphone style roguelike, which was my entree into the genre, but Spelunky has so much soul.
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Monday, 17 December 2012 18:50 (eleven years ago) link
s1ocki, the other thing that can help (if you haven't done it already), is to open the shortcut to area 3, so you can practice it without the stress of making it through the earlier areas. I've found once I beat an area a couple of times it becomes much more manageable.
― JCL, Monday, 17 December 2012 18:50 (eleven years ago) link
yeah I spent all day basically buying that shortcut haha

there seem to be a lot of ways to get yourself in an un-get-outable spot
Before you drop down a platform, always do the crouching look down to see if either the exit is down there or a platform that you can move from so you don't get stuck. Never just chance it by dropping down to a platform where you can't see how to get off that platform. Due to the ways the levels are randomized, you should actually always be able to get to the exit without using a rope or a bomb. Occasionally on the ice levels that isn't true because mines can go off through no fault of your own or flying saucers could blow up an important platform etc. It's another reason you kind of want to move through these sections as fast as you can.
― JCL, Monday, 17 December 2012 19:02 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah, roguelike is misused here.
Roguelike doesn't just equal quality, to me, it equals "the only kind of game that I'm willing to sacrifice months of life into decoding its patterns"
― you, your max is on fire (flamboyant goon tie included), Monday, 17 December 2012 19:31 (eleven years ago) link
And I think it's disingenuous to see the term applied to a platformer that features randomly generated levels.
it's rogue-like in that it features permanent death and randomly generated environments. but it's also clearly a heavy homage to nethack w/ the shop keepers + altars, etc
― Mordy, Monday, 17 December 2012 19:32 (eleven years ago) link
It doesn't in the least bit convey the mental challenges or rewards that are found in roguelikes. You might as well make the lead character a Tetris piece and call it a "Tetris platformer". Anyway cute game. You know what? Why hasn't anybody taken the Starfox model of game design and turned it into a genre? I would play those games forever. Or actual roguelikes.

Binding of Isaac is great, but not trad roguelike. Kinda a roguelike + zelda hybrid w/ sadistic biblical references. FTL is fun but not alltime. worth a look at tho

It IS weird though, how Area 2 is like twenty times harder than Area 1. Ice levels were always easier to survive. I don't think I made it to City of Gold, but I haven't picked up the game in a while.
Binding of Isaac is fun but being done in Flash the system performance is kinda awful (at least on my oldish iMac). Still, there is a lot of stuff in there to keep you interested, unlockable characters, crazy amount of random unidentified power-ups, etc.
I played a tiny bit of Dungeons of Dredmor but wasn't really sucked in

― Panaïs Pnin (The Yellow Kid), Monday, 17 December 2012 23:36 (eleven years ago) link
152,000 is the best I've done so far.
Someday maybe I'll beat the game, then I'll start thinking about getting to the city of gold and trying to break 1,000,000. I also have still yet to go to the worm world. One of the many things that make this game so great, is the many different ways you can play it... for score, for survival, for speed, to kill shop keepers, etc...
― JCL, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 17:10 (eleven years ago) link
The shopkeeper's seemingly PCP-induced mania is still terrifying. Especially when you accidentally kill one with a boulder or explosive, and then you're fighting all of them for the rest of the game...
― Nhex, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 17:57 (eleven years ago) link
FTL is so hard. I can get to the final boss (on easy only!) but can only beat his first form.

u beat it? i think i had a big breakthrough last night when i realized how devastating boarding party strategy can be. i was rolling around w/ an amazing ship very early when i accidentally left my boarding party on a ship that FTL'd away. OOPS.
― Mordy, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 15:39 (eleven years ago) link
yeah, i beat it with 2 different ships before i had to stop playing it, on normal both times. i was comboing 1-2 low maintenance regular guns to take shields out and then hit with beam weapon, trying to focus on their guns and shields. power also into shields and manoeuvre and not much else. made sure i had numbers on crew but never bothered with boarding myself. honestly though, while these things helped, you can't do anything but play enough times over until you get a few breaks and a decent start.

and personally i never made it to the end either, which also dampens my enthusiasm
Never finished it either, but I got to the point where I could reach the temple more often than not. And did get into Hell a couple of times. Dipped back into the original last week actually and I still love it (even though I've forgotten how to make any progress at all). If the soundtrack is by whoever did the first then that'll be enough to convince me to play 2.
No mention of a handheld release though - I quite liked the original on X360 and PC but it was the Vita port which really got its claws into me. Just works so much better as a pick-up-for-10-minutes kind of thing, which never feels right on a full console. Vita port seems unlikely this time round though so I guess I'm going to hold out for a Switch release?
