I mean, I know all of the 1977 songs by heart. They're great: perfect, bitter-but-uplifting breakup songs. And Form of Flattery is such a great diss.

longneck I don't know if I can trust your opinion about anything anymore

tsk tsk tsk

one month passes...

"slow it down" dropping today, apparently

johnny crunch, Thursday, 14 February 2013 12:55 (eleven years ago) link

this song sucks

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 15 February 2013 00:53 (eleven years ago) link

the production on his songs has really fallen off, "roc your body" excepted

Does not suck. Is great. Love it.

longneck, Friday, 15 February 2013 09:58 (eleven years ago) link

it's just sad how much terius has fallen off at this point :(

always used to love how he could somehow produce genius even when being really obviously lazy/tossed-off but there are just no ideas left

lex pretend, Friday, 15 February 2013 10:57 (eleven years ago) link

the well does indeed appear to be dry

then again i do love "nobody's business" (purely as a song dammit, not for CB)

my lurker username is looking shitty these days

livethedream, Friday, 15 February 2013 12:08 (eleven years ago) link

nah this is fantastic. total return to form after all that post-love king bullshit imo

Jacques_Lamure, Friday, 15 February 2013 14:26 (eleven years ago) link

i dont think it's awful, but it sounds to me like someone trying to ape dreams style more than anything else, which is incredibly :[

johnny crunch, Friday, 15 February 2013 14:29 (eleven years ago) link

i think his downward turn in consistency has been pretty gradual and not actually that huge, though just enough to matter obviously, but i don't even know how this song is half as good as "Dope Chick"

weed, tumblr whites and wein (some dude), Friday, 15 February 2013 14:52 (eleven years ago) link

I love them both.

longneck, Friday, 15 February 2013 14:53 (eleven years ago) link

"dope chick" has the dopiest chorus, i could never get into that song

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Friday, 15 February 2013 15:55 (eleven years ago) link

it's not top shelf or anything, but it grew on me

weed, tumblr whites and wein (some dude), Friday, 15 February 2013 15:57 (eleven years ago) link

i feel like every time this guy drops a song, a random set of people are like "a return to form!"

i mean i thought that about "roc your body" so no hate, it's just a weird phenomenon

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Friday, 15 February 2013 15:57 (eleven years ago) link

I'll give support to J0rdan's point: This new track is great; his best since "Body Work/Fuck My Brains Out." Didn't think he had something so bottomlessly hooky in him anymore. Return to form.

Evan R, Friday, 15 February 2013 15:59 (eleven years ago) link

i really liked "fuck my brains out" too

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Friday, 15 February 2013 15:59 (eleven years ago) link

That's the shit he does better than anybody else... just barrage you with hook after hook after hook after twist after hook. It's an incredible thing, so I can forgive him for losing his knack for it. Nobody could sustain that writing style for more than three or four years

Evan R, Friday, 15 February 2013 16:02 (eleven years ago) link

"fuck my brains out" is the only solo terius song i've really loved post-love king

baffled at any love for this - even "roc" was sort-of-ok in a basic way but this is just sad

lex pretend, Friday, 15 February 2013 16:02 (eleven years ago) link

i honestly always thought his solo stuff was just one decent-sized fraction of his best work. these days would much rather hear something he's written for Beyonce or Rihanna or whoever, feel like his outside writing has suffered less lately.

weed, tumblr whites and wein (some dude), Friday, 15 February 2013 16:05 (eleven years ago) link

yeah his stuff on 4 doesn't back up my impression that he's fallen off post-love king (but then looking at the list of writers lord knows how much he had to do with those songs)

lex pretend, Friday, 15 February 2013 16:08 (eleven years ago) link

xp That's definitely true, but his solo records gave him room to just let a song ride in a way the songs he writes for bigger stars never could. His best solo stuff was always so unhurried, so you could just sit there and luxuriate in how hooky and gorgeous it all was. I miss that vibe.

Evan R, Friday, 15 February 2013 16:09 (eleven years ago) link

it's funny that he starts this new song off by saying "i know they're not gonna play this on top 40 radio" despite that quote from a year or so ago where he was like "i can write a solo smash whenever i want to, that's not what i'm going for right now. i'm gonna do that when i'm 50."

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Friday, 15 February 2013 16:10 (eleven years ago) link

I miss good terius so much

乒乓, Friday, 15 February 2013 16:32 (eleven years ago) link

chillin w/ my ella / there's nothin u can tella

乒乓, Friday, 15 February 2013 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

This is a bit of a trifle but I'm enjoying it, more than I expected to from reading the most recent posts at least. Fabolous verse is woeful though.

I stand by my theory that Terius has always had pretty much zero quality control, but he barely needed it up to 2010 or thereabouts because his overall quality was so high.

Matt DC, Friday, 15 February 2013 16:42 (eleven years ago) link

the fab verse definitely sucks but the nu-dream alternative would've been an electric guitar solo so i can deal with it

Jacques_Lamure, Friday, 15 February 2013 16:43 (eleven years ago) link

no one will be talking about this song a month from now

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 15 February 2013 17:16 (eleven years ago) link

Listened once, that's probably enough.

No. They'll be singing it instead, looking at butts.

longneck, Friday, 15 February 2013 17:24 (eleven years ago) link

a generic 3rd rate version of one of his actually-good songs probably WILL be the one that blows up & makes me hate the-dream

still dont think it'll be this one, though

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 15 February 2013 18:17 (eleven years ago) link

I quite like the sound of Fab's verse, if not the content

Number None, Friday, 15 February 2013 18:20 (eleven years ago) link

if the-dream ever makes a solo song that blows up and people sing along with again, it will definitely feature the line "looking at butts"

weed, tumblr whites and wein (some dude), Friday, 15 February 2013 18:22 (eleven years ago) link

I don't know about you guys but when he sings "You can see her ass from a satelite!" I get all warm and fuzzy inside.

longneck, Friday, 15 February 2013 18:49 (eleven years ago) link

Can he go away and not come back until he's made a whole album along the lines of "Schoolin Life" (not strictly the same, but variations on that theme. Preferably with Bey)

Tim F, Friday, 15 February 2013 20:58 (eleven years ago) link

tim did you hear his song on the keyshia album

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 15 February 2013 22:15 (eleven years ago) link

man i swear for all the years i've been bullshitting about terius on this board i've never understood anyone's - except probably tim's - taste in dream songs. this os hardly a leap forward or anything - i don't want to say "those days are over" because he'll come and hit us with some of his best work out of nowhere like he did with "4", but the days of that being the norm are certainly over - but this is just a solid terius joint. real warm, hooky, everything in its right place, sort of 2013's "FILA". i'm OK with this existing

manti 乒乓 (k3vin k.), Saturday, 16 February 2013 03:15 (eleven years ago) link

oh boy tim's against me and i'm agreeing with matt dc and longneck. up is down, left is right, luol deng is a back-to-back all-star

^^ this is otm i think. was super curious to hear this having read a couple of responses here but yeah it's just like ... fine, & nice. it's funny, i was reading some thing about suit & tie in which the reviewer talked about various things having stepped into timberlake's shoes in the five years in which he was quiet, dream records & frank ocean & various subgenres of r&b, &c, & wrt this song that feels kinda pronounced, too, like hearing something that's so terius - in being this pretty lush textural build-up of all of his favourite tropes - the song feels like a more specialist, slightly marginal catalogue entry for dream fans more than it does an general new release by anyone else. like you go to it for what you get from him, & you get a kinda 2013 FILA as a result, even if that thing has become slightly less significant or universal than it once was. i'm psyched for the record too, even as just a bunch of generic dream textural synth jams. it sounds nice.

schlump, Saturday, 16 February 2013 03:36 (eleven years ago) link

thing is terius has made solid, unremarkable, even terius-by-numbers singles before - "rockin' that shit", "love king", "fila" - that he obviously did in 10 minutes but they were still pretty likable and hooky. this is just tired.

lex pretend, Saturday, 16 February 2013 09:00 (eleven years ago) link

Well this is definitely likable and hooky to me. It is self-consciously throwback, but in a fun way. But then again I love terius-by-numbers better than I love almost any other numbers.

longneck, Saturday, 16 February 2013 10:53 (eleven years ago) link

I only had to play it twice before the kids and wife started to sing along to it. They didn't say anything about it being tired either.

longneck, Saturday, 16 February 2013 10:55 (eleven years ago) link

"rockin that shit" was unremarkable hmmmmk

manti 乒乓 (k3vin k.), Saturday, 16 February 2013 14:10 (eleven years ago) link

haha yeah i raised an eyebrow at that too
