Of course the White Sox throw up 14 runs and lose. Silver lining: Jose Uribe is on my fantasy team! Not to silver is that Big Hurt is riding the pine for much of this series and didn't do jack for me today.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 01:55 (nineteen years ago) link

to = so

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 01:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't remember a season in which the Sox played so many beer-league softball-type games. Losing 17-14 to the goddamned fucking Expos is a fucking disgrace. Sucky 5th starters + atrocious relief pitching (with the exception of Mr. Zero) = recipe for 2nd or 3rd place in the very winnable AL Central.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 20 June 2004 02:49 (nineteen years ago) link

I still think they'll win the division, but then again the Tigers might pull off a Jesse Ventura-esque victory somehow.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 03:01 (nineteen years ago) link

thomas is just putting up insane numbers right now, it's like, what. 170 point separate his OBA and batting average and he's only got 3 IBBs. (which is not to say that scott hatteberg shouldn't be your 1B AL rep)

i don't get how the sox are scoring all these runs though. i guess most everyone is offensively a plus at their position, with a couple plus pluses thrown in. except crede, that guy blows.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 20 June 2004 03:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Sox have an array of offensive threats: Ordonez, Lee, Thomas, Konerko, Uribe, Valentin, Harris, Olivo, and even guys like Rowand, Alomar, Burke and Gload have decent averages. It's what's saved their bacon this year, since their starting pitching has been really shaky for most of the last month.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 20 June 2004 03:48 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, well "Offensive threats" = "swing for the fences like there is no tomorrow"

business as usual on the South Side, in other words.

Ok, that's not entirely true; the emergence of Uribe and Harris at the top of the order (the latter especially - TOTALLY unexpected, in my case anyway), and their impressive OBP numbers, helps counteract the rest of the homer-happy lineup.

But seriously, Buehrle needs to stop this "OK, I will SUCK for the first two innings and then settle down" crap. For real. I'm getting REAL SICK of the routine, Mark.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 20 June 2004 04:19 (nineteen years ago) link

I wonder if the overall White Sox starters' tendency to give up 2-4 runs in the first 2 innings of every game is an abberation vs. other teams, or not. Seriously, it seems that every time I tune in after the first inning, the Sox are either leading 5-3 or down 3-0.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 20 June 2004 04:39 (nineteen years ago) link

When he's inducted into the HOF, people are going to wake up and realize just what they missed on the south side with Big Hurt. The guy is a monster, even in a season like this, which isn't remotely close to his best.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:16 (nineteen years ago) link

since frank has been on the sox have they pulled off any division championships¿ maybe once the team gets noticed more so too will thomas.

dyson (dyson), Sunday, 20 June 2004 14:59 (nineteen years ago) link

they pulled off several in the early '90s and didn't they get one around '98? but in those days their pitching wasn't arse...

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 20 June 2004 16:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Um, they did it in 2000.

Kerry (dymaxia), Sunday, 20 June 2004 22:44 (nineteen years ago) link

The White Sox won the AL West in '93, and would probably have won it in '94 if the season was completed. They won the AL Central in 2000, too.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 21 June 2004 00:21 (nineteen years ago) link

wasn't it mostly Reinsdorf's fault that the '94 strike happened?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Reinsdorf was one of the biggest hawks on the owners' side, so yes, that is an especially ironic dagger in the back of White Sox fans considering that the Sox might've gone to the Series in '94.

And, if you'll recall, Reinsy was also one of the owners who decried the escalation of player salaries, yet he had no problem in signing Albert Belle to the most lucrative contract to date in '96.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:16 (nineteen years ago) link

And this is the same guy whose methods of running a club so pissed off Michael Jordan so bad that he will never have anything to do with the Bulls ever again, even though without him they would probably be still playing in old Chicago stadium and would have never have won jack.

Of course, Jordan did greatly upstage the Sox when they did make the playoffs with his first retirement.

Chicago sports team owners are all evil and it is hard to say which ones are the worse. All I have to say is whoever opproved the design for the remodeling of Soldier Field needs to be taken out and shot at sunrise, that thing is an abombination and has completely ruined a historic stadium.

earlnash, Monday, 21 June 2004 03:35 (nineteen years ago) link

that Belle signing worked out well for him, too.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:36 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, I miss old Soldier Field. Went to the last regular-season game there.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Albert Belle was still available in fantasy leagues last year because of his contract, ha.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 21 June 2004 06:54 (nineteen years ago) link

For a month or so last year, every ILB-affiliated league transaction involved picking up & dropping Albert Belle. It was sublime.

Can't tell you how much fun it was "watching" that Sat night game on the Outta Town Scoreboard... If beers at Shea weren't $5.75, I woulda had to invent a drinking game. Some of those pitching lines look like lottery tickets:

No wonder I didn't know who Shingo was, ESPN doesn't even have a profile up yet.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah yes, Arnie Munoz, yet another in the long line of failed 5th starters brought up from the minors this year; the Sox are now recycling these guys, and Jon Rauch (who left the park prior to the finish of his last major league start) starts this Thursday against the Tribe.

Sox got some problems.

speaking of devilish smiles did anyone see the pic of jack ryan on the front page of the tribune yesterday? the only things he was missing were the horns, tail, and pitchfork.

Why isn't Walt Harris playing?? Nursing an injury or getting outplayed?

Why isn't Walt Harris playing?? Nursing an injury or getting outplayed?

Last I checked, Walt Harris was leaving worn jocks all over Soldier Field while a cornerback for Da Bears. Willie Harris has been getting platooned for both Rowand in CF and Uribe at 2B, and so far it hasn't hurt the Sox too much.

This week's series against the Twins is going smoothly; Buehrle was like butter last night and Freddy Garcia did OK in his first start in a Sox uni -- if Jose Valentin doesn't blow a possible double play ball, the score ends up being 9-4 Sox. Shingo gave up his first run in over 26 IP tonight, on a pounded Joe Mauer dinger.

Sox are currently up 1 game on the Twins, so no complaints here...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:41 (nineteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...
Crazy Carl don't waste no time! Aaaaah...that was vintage May 2004 or something.

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 02:06 (nineteen years ago) link

So, two shutouts in a row of the hottest hitting team in beisbol, the Tribe. Buehrle flirting with a perfect game/no hitter last night, and Garcia with a fine effort today. The Indians were just 3-1/2 back before yesterday's game, so it's good to see the Sox not looking past them. This is a huge stretch of the season, when the Sox play all AL Central opponents, so they can pick up some ground here...IF the Twins would finally lose a game or two. Sheesh.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 23 July 2004 03:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Cliff Lee had had a couple of good starts before that Sox game and like the Reds about a month ago, he got shelled.

Ouch...should of had him on the bench for my fantasy team.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 23 July 2004 09:34 (nineteen years ago) link

how did the Twins suddenly pick up a half game? I haven't been paying attention this week.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 23 July 2004 14:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm deeply saddened by loss to the pale hose.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 23 July 2004 14:53 (nineteen years ago) link

On Tuesday the Twins beat the Tigers in 10 innings while the White Sox lost to the Rangers 6-4. Other than that, they've been mirroring each other's performance for the last 10 days or so.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:40 (nineteen years ago) link

I am going to the game tonight. It will be my first professional baseball game in 14 years.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Friday, 23 July 2004 16:12 (nineteen years ago) link

have fun. Fireworks after?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 23 July 2004 16:16 (nineteen years ago) link

It was fun. We didn't stay for fireworks. I spent half an hour searching for the veggie dogs that they theoretically have at US Cellular (according to their website). The El ride home wasn't as crowded as I feared. It was a really fast game (started at 7, we were home by 10). Oh yeah, and Sox won.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Monday, 26 July 2004 19:46 (nineteen years ago) link

The White Sox come back on Saturday night against the Tigers was great. Hopefully they can right the ship against the two losses since Saturday tonight against the Twins.

So...................when's football season start?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 20:53 (nineteen years ago) link

[BBT, I left you a message on the Dutch Music Acts thread on ILM.]

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 21:02 (nineteen years ago) link

I was there today. Ugh. Anyway, NA, the veggie dogs are under the fan deck which is behind center field. That's all I have to say for now, because I heard enough bitching on the way home. I got all the frustration out of my system while waiting to leave the park. Jacque Jones turned to the crowd and held up three fingers at the end of the game. That had me fuming, but it was a nice cathartic focal point, 'cos I yelled at him. Not that he heard me or anything.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 22:47 (nineteen years ago) link

shingo got robbed, there's no way he would have lost that game without a botch like that.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 22:55 (nineteen years ago) link

WTF is up with Shingo's theme music? It's all like "Ching chong ching chong ching ching chong (gong crash!)" With a SLAMMIN' techno beat. Is he Japanese or something? I wasn't sure.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Thursday, 29 July 2004 14:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, don't get me started. A lot of the new introductions this year are absolute crap - stupid, embarrassing, grating, you name it. Much of the music is horrible. The last thing we need is PR that doesn't do much to dispel stereotypes about ignorant, tacky south siders. Jeezus, turn the volume down just a little.

One minute, Guillen wondered why "people thought I was going to take my shirt off and go butt naked on Michigan Avenue" during the White Sox's victory parade, and the next, when it was suggested that Guillen leave it all and retire to his native Venezuela and get fat and happy, he scoffed.

"Because," Guillen explained, "my wife, when I have sex with her, wants to feel a good-looking man."
