He's a bluegrass virtuoso of some sort- on the banjo, I think. Some think he's a genius, some a boring waste of time. There may be some overlap of his fanbase with that of the Grateful Dead.

Biography by Sandra Brennan
Premiere banjo player Béla Fleck is considered one of the most innovative pickers in the world and has done much to demonstrate the versatility of his instrument, which he uses to play everything from traditional bluegrass to progressive jazz. He was named after composer Béla Bartok and was born in New York City. Around age 15, Fleck became fascinated with the banjo after hearing Flatt & Scruggs' "Ballad of Jed Clampett" and Weissberg & Mandell... Read More...

Remember, keep to the lo-fi end, and you'll be golden.

Which also conveniently means that you don't have to wait for your Avalon preamp any more.

Seriously. I know you don't want to hear this sort of cynical male advise, but I concur with Gear and Kingfish. Make an album of songs with lyrics like (or culled from) your posts. If you make an actual album - 8-10 songs on a CD - and send it out to the press, it will get reviewed, and it will get reviewed well. After all, people here like Xiu Xiu, which you should check out: you will probably find the music "ugly" but the sentiments are real and pretty heart-rending.

It will give you the audience and the platform to do what you ultimately want to do.

Again, I'm sorry if it comes across as patronizing, but this is sound advise.

I know this chick who once balled Blea Fleck. She was pretty hot. She was also missing one of her upper canines. It was off-putting at first, but eventually it sorta added to her je ne sais qua. Mr. Fleck certainly didn't seem to mind.

also, make 50-100 copies of the album and send it to all the music departments of the top 100 or so college radio stations that report to this magazine.

many of us on this board were college DJs, and many spent a good deal of time going thru all the new arrivals in the mail. If you get your stuff out there, and get it in a case that looks right(the whole sepia photo & proper typeface thing), people will find your disc and you will get on the air. It's as simple as that.

Hell, make sure you give your contact info on the packaging, and you'll probably even get emails from some of the DJs telling you how much they dig your music.

Aldo Cella, Friday, 12 August 2005 16:55 (eighteen years ago) link

someone on the net posted a very funny message about Bela Fleck. they said that he is having delusions of Bangeur.
Bela is a bango player.
The joke that he has delusions of Bangeur, was a genius comment. I didn't write it.
aldo has been writing me from Staten Island for years.
Aldo is definately not me.
sorry to disappoint you. You can't figure everything out.
Bela is talented, but lacks extreme sensitivity which is what makes up a great musician.
He lacks sensitivity and lacks sensitivity towards others.
He loves his cat, that is good. I love cats.
That means Bela has some sensitivity, but called the cat "Animal."
This is not very imaginative.
and if you were a cat, you wouldn't someone to call you Animal.
This is disrespectful and not an endearing name.
He probably called his wife "Woman."
Like, "come here woman."
Hey woman, want to make love?
Bela is not exactly a man who loves anything too much.

marissa -marchant, Friday, 12 August 2005 16:58 (eighteen years ago) link

If you were a cat, would you want someone to call you animal?
If you are very good, I may give Aldo my name stage name address.
but not sure yet.
Bela calls the cat "Animal."
wow, that is really a nice name. very creative.

marissa -marchant, Friday, 12 August 2005 17:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Maybe he named the cat after this Animal:

This was the greatest thread I've seen today.

MY TRUE BELA FLECK STORY:
I worked with a guy at my college radio station who was a HUGE Bela Fleck. The Flecktones were coming to down, and this guy acted like Linus anticipating the Great Pumpkin. He got an interview booked, and for like a week, I had to listen to this music that sounded like a banjo being picked apart on some sheet metal.

The day finally came. Fleck was held hostage by this fanboy for at least an hour on the air. Finally, Fleck said he had to get away and go to the venue where he was performing. Fanboy didn't have a car, but oh, young Pleasant Plains did.

So Bela Fleck and I walked through the residence hall and laundry room to my car, Fleck shaking his head and grinning about the last hour taken from his life. We get in my car and I turn the ignition. Since I had been in the car by myself last, the radio was all cranked up. I quickly turned it off, and Fleck looked at me with sad eyes. "Do you mind if we turn that back on?"

I say that I don't mind and he turns the radio on. AND IT'S THAT DAMNED BANJO BEING PLUCKED ACROSS SHEET METAL MUSIC AGAIN. Poor Bela missed out on hearing his own song on the radio for nearly ten seconds.

So I can definitely see how he'd be a lotharious heartbreaker.

BELA SMASH

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 12 August 2005 17:20 (eighteen years ago) link

No, I just think Bela's mind is not imaginative, and he couldn't come up with anything else.
He is like a man in a cave, mesolithic man, grunts, hits his chest and calls every beast "animal." And calls every female, "woman."
He is not overly developed in his mind.
He plays a primitive instrument, sometimes he evolves. Most times, Bela is a primitive man, calls Cats "Animal."
Grunt Grunt.
He has grunted my way a few times.

marissa -marchant, Friday, 12 August 2005 17:21 (eighteen years ago) link

funny story. Yes, bela is very into thyself.

marissa -marchant, Friday, 12 August 2005 17:25 (eighteen years ago) link

the man isn't getting much radio play. He isn't a heartbreaker. He is boring an dull.
I am writing crispin and others like him fan letters.
Nothing romantic..
Bela is a dull man, breaking no one's heart except women who play bluegrass.

marissa -marchant, Friday, 12 August 2005 17:27 (eighteen years ago) link

marissa, can you tell us your history with Bela?

marissa fan, Friday, 12 August 2005 17:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I would rather not.
There is something that has happened. Bela is very aware of me.
He knows what I look like in person, as he couldn't keep his eyes off me.
But bela is dullsville. I would rather not get into what has gone with Bela Fleck.
But bela is into thyself, cares nothing about others.
The name "Animal," befits Bela's personality. As even his supposed beloved cat is demeaned to an object, a beast, not something he really cares about. If you care about your cat, you would not name the cat "Animal."

Bela's my aunt's cousin. He premiered this video at Juilliard directed by his brother about the tour he did with Edgar Meyer. I met him before the film (with my aunt) and had no idea who he was. I thought, Baila? that's an interesting name. took me until right about the time the movie started to realize. he seemed like a nice enough guy, but then again i talked to him for 2 minutes. the tour seemed better than i expected.

okay boring story over. i wish i had actually made a complete fool of myself (or him, depending, though that would've been much harder)
