I have this suspicion that one of the things that troubles my digestive system is baking powder. But I haven't verified it.

Eating anything sweet or drinking alcohol within an hour before I lay down for bed is a guarantee of heartburn, but that doesn't stop me. I just chew up antacids and hope for the best.

I've heard that sour cherries are supposed to ward off the gout.

yeah, my grandpa eats the cherries for his gout.

Ouch, sounds awful!

Teeny - there are some heartburn remedies you can take when you are pregnant. Also try peppermint tea.

Chatting to a doctor (not an appointment, just a friendly chat) it appears that I don't have the syptoms of an MSG allergy, more of just the way my body reacts to strong flavours. The thing is, it can last for 4 hours (facial flushing & sweating, coupled with tingling lips & mouth) & seems to have come on suddenly. hmph!

I suspect I have gallstones, and lately I cant eat any kind of biggish meal, especially anything fatty, without feeling like I've swallowed lumps of wood that are jammed into my gullet and right side. It isnt painful but its bloody uncomfortable. Scary thing is, it is putting me off eating alltogether!

O well I wanted to lose weight anyway :/

Trayce, have you seen a doctor about this?

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 09:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah. I'm meant to have an ultrasound to confirm it, but I keep putting it off, because I swap shifts every single bloody week and it is causing my life outside work total havoc :(

Really should get it done next week.

For gout give the herbal remedy of Devils Claw and Yucca a try. It works for me whenever I have a flairup. Start with 4 capsuls of each 3 times the first day then 3 caps 3 times a day for the next several days then drop down to 1 each 3 times a day for a week more. Drink plenty of water as these (like the sour cherries) work to flush the excess uric acid out of your system so you need to up your water intake.

For gallstones drink 2 cups of extra virgin olive oil and lay on your right side.... gall bladder down. The olive oil will flood into your gall bladder and help to ease the passing of any stones that are small enough to not require surgery.

STAY CLOSE TO THE BATHROOM ! ! ! !

I cannot stress this point enough..... you will suddenly need the bathroom RIGHT NOW!!! It may take 15 minutes or it could take several hours but it WILL HAPPEN.

The olive oil will pass harmlessly thru your system as well as flushing out any stones and emptying the bile from your gall bladder.

I have not had the pleasure of gallstones but my Father in law did (note the past tense) He did this and it completely cleared up his problem. (nasty greasy green slime was his description of the after effects of this treatment)

2 CUPS of olive oil! Drunk straight! My god.

Jaq (who is not a balding Frenchman) (Jaq), Thursday, 18 August 2005 02:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Ive read of this olive oil flush before. The thing I PHEAR about it is: if fats (like cream and cheese etc) cause gallstone pain, wont PINTS OF OIL be even more painful? Like is this safe? Will it hurt?

I dunno... I might just get an ultrasound to start with ;)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 August 2005 02:39 (eighteen years ago) link

The pain is caused from jagged stones trapped in the bile ducts leading to and from the gall bladder. The gall bladder releases the bile to help digest fats but it is unable to pass thru due to the partial and/or complete blockage from the stones.

The sudden ingestion of the massive amount of liquid fat forces the gall bladder to empty plus the lubrication from the oil helps the stuck stones to slide right on out.

Sure, there may be temporary mild discomfort, but figuring the alternative of continued constant pain or surgery...... or if you are lucky your Dr. may use ultrasound to bust up the jagged stones into many smaller even more jagged pieces to let them pass........

It's just a suggestion but it does work if the stones aren't too big.

I didnt think they did the ultrasound shattering thing on gallstones, only on kidney stones? Everything I've read and been told is just "get it removed". Apaz we dont need a gall bladder. Which weirds me out.

You can get dried cherries, if those help him.

There is a lot of information on the web, such as About, but you have to keep in mind that anyone can post anything they like on-line, so really your best resource will be medical professionals.

Funny this thread should be revived now - I just had confirmation by ultrasound (took my time, hey) that I dont have gallstones after all; but I may have "sludge" (pre-stone gunk). Am having CT scan soon, to find out more - could be something else like my liver or stomach!

One good thing tho: it forces me to avoid fats. Great diet!

Will you be saved by SONAR?

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 3 February 2006 07:46 (eighteen years ago) link

errr.. eh?

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Sorry, that's my brain being odd. Ultrasound is a descendant of sonar, and I just like the idea of being able to tell people "My life was saved by SONAR!"

Looking forward to hobbling through a long bar shift tonight. But I had about a day of warning signs, long enough to get my indomethacin refilled yesterday while I was getting a strep test. So the toe felt broken this morning but just feels badly stubbed now. Ha, fuck you gout!
