Giorgio Albertazzi really, Really, REALLY wants to sleep with Delphine Seyrig.

Although perhaps not quite as much as Michel Lonsdale in India Song.

from The Reeler:

A memo dropped over the transom this morning at Reeler HQ notes that Last Year at Marienbad vexed, frustrated, infuriated and transfixed audiences at Film Forum over the four-day weekend to the tune of $19,101 -- the highest per-screen average of any film in New York not named Cloverfield. Those Rialto kids, I swear. It's like they print money.

Thinking about going tonight, but probably won't make it.

Can somebody explain this? I need to watch that new DVD edition I bought of this.

baaderonixx, Friday, 25 January 2008 09:41 (sixteen years ago) link

haven't seen it but if it's like Robbe-Grillet's novels at all then "who's telling the story and what's in it for him?" is a key question

i saw 'muriel' recently, which fox lorber did a dvd of last year. i think the dvd is fucked, or mine is, and towards the end the sound went out of sync, but i reckons it's his best film. has an emotional wallop you don't get from 'marienbad'. 'marienbad' is probably the most faithful to the nouveau romain ethos, so i guess it's about zeroing out anything internal. it is a very sad film in its own way, i suppose.

Yes, I really need to see 'Muriel'. Marienbad is one of my fave movies, but I guess the pleasure is purely aesthetic.

Hoberman writes it's ultimate meditation on the cheesiest pickup line ("Haven't I seen you somewhere...?"). Saw it last night, much more visually overwhelming than I'd recalled -- must be the print quality.

Missed it. Too bad. Maybe I'll reread The Invention of Morel instead.

It IS funny, but not as funny as its "loose remake."

Man, the organ music in this movie is suffocating.

As bad as Carnival of Souls? I can't remember either right now. I'm tempted to put on some organ music now.

When I took intro French in college they taught us the variant "L'annee derniere a St Tropez!"

do all home video editions of this feature the subtitles at the top of the screen? the criterion is out of print & i got a DVD on amazon that looked suspicious but the picture quality was surprisingly good. the subtitle thing bugged me at first but then it compounded the disorientating effect of the film itself in a nice way.

I’m kind of weirded out about the fact that the last post in this thread before you was from me 7 years ago. Appropriate I guess.

I saw this in school on an old DVD and I have the Criterion. Neither played subs at the top. You might have a weird one but also some players have options to change sub positions and colors and such.

I have the Studio Canal Collection blu-ray, and the subtitles are at the bottom.

I started this thread and I'm still somewhat unclear what the movie is about.

it's possible that the top captions are closed captioning which is different from subtitles and is also included on most discs.

it's this one: https://www.amazon.com/Last-Year-Marienbad-Delphine-Seyrig/dp/B00NCJPWP4

there's no menu, and the subtitles or CC can't be turned off

Saw this in the cinema last night and I know what you mean - still an amazing film though.
