this movie was great. all the things pointed out as drawbacks were things I liked a lot. That scene where it holds on Nicole Kidman's face in the symphony for like five minutes and you only really see maybe one emotion cross her face during the entire time? brilliant! new husband going nuts and spanking the kid? frightening and hysterical! the crappy bathrooms in the lush, straight-out-of 1970 New York apartments with their lush deep green paint, ornate brass sconces and incredibly heavy drapery? beautiful! Kidman? gorgeous! the opening tracking shot? uh, it's just a tracking shot on it, I didn't see anything ridiculous about it. THe freaky shot of Sean in the tree? Scary!

There are a few things about the film that don't quite make sense, such as

**** SPOILER ******

how does Sean know where Sean died? I guess maybe he looked it up.

****** end spoiler *******

but I still think this is easily one of the best films I've seen all year.

Actually, I...enjoyed watching it and agree with one or two of the things that you say. I also think it failed on several crucial levels.

this was a weird film. i guess i kinda liked it, but then i am a sucker for this sort of thing and cant trust my immediate judgement.

the last scene was a bit overwrought though. the film as a whole doesn't really build to any sort of revelation, and maybe that's the point, but the kidman character doesn't really go through any change at all. (in fact the whole movie seems to be about raising her expectations and then destroying them--c'est la vie, perhaps, but i felt mugged, yeah life sucks glazer, thanks for reminding me.)

I definitely think it didn't succeed in doing the things it tried to do that well, but I still thought it was great. This is coming from the position of someont who could watch NK's face for hours, not just minutes, though.

Unravelling the basically irrelevant Rertour de Jock Ewingesque plot late on felt kind of pointless - maybe it was just there to show that it doesn't matter whether love is warranted or not, but we all knew that, right?

But never mind. The point, as Jonathan Romney said in his Independent on Sunday review, is to follow it emotionally, and that I did. But it wasn't quite all there for me. I don't think I blame NK.
