Nice to see that their rarities comp is import only (& available @ Amazon for the princely sum of $38).

I might go w/ Strangers, as it was my first. Tho I think Mother of All Saints was the one I played the most (& I haven't listed to any TFUL in maybe 5ish years).

NickB - yes.

http://www.tful282.com/ for reference. Easy to navigate discography there.

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 16:42 (fifteen years ago) link

This is IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!

The answer is here somewhere:

Where's Officer Tuba EP (1993, EP)
Admonishing the Bishops EP (1993, EP)
The Funeral Pudding (1994, EP)

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 16:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, if those three EPs were merged into a single album, that would clearly be the best TFUL album.

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 16:47 (fifteen years ago) link

steve shasta otm if you also tack on "catcher" and "tell me" from "mother of all saints". best band in the world in 92-94?

dan, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Lovelyville

o. nate, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Admonishing the Bishops is so, so good, I find it hard not to vote for it. However, I'm in an epic mood today and the monument that is Mother of All Saints is my pick.

One of the best bands of the nineties, hands down.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:15 (fifteen years ago) link

One of the best bands of the nineties, hands down.

YES

Saw them three times back then and that is a true statement.

Poll is impossible. I think my favorite album is their most recent!

sleeve, Thursday, 31 July 2008 00:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Bob Dinners is very much slept on. "Another Clip" is one of my favorite Fellers songs.

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 31 July 2008 01:10 (fifteen years ago) link

It's absolutely Admonishing, Funeral Pudding second to it.

cee-oh-tee-tee, Thursday, 31 July 2008 01:45 (fifteen years ago) link

there's good reasons to vote for any one of these

I chose Admonishing w/ Mother of All Saints / Strangers tied for runnerup. & Brian Hageman's 'Twin Smooth Snouts' is great too.

Milton Parker, Thursday, 31 July 2008 01:49 (fifteen years ago) link

strangers just over hope it lands

mizzell, Thursday, 31 July 2008 02:22 (fifteen years ago) link

I very much enjoyed this page from their official website:
http://www.tful282.com/eavesdrop/eavesdrop00.htm

Voted Admonishing, could've been Mother Of All Saints though. I think I sold all the others, were they actually any good? Maybe I should've kept 'em, but then I said that about Shellac too once and I was wrong there, so...

Matt #2, Thursday, 31 July 2008 02:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Sorry, I'm babbling

Matt #2, Thursday, 31 July 2008 02:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Mother of All Saints is just so titanic & beautiful. Also, I have a thing for double albums.

ian, Thursday, 31 July 2008 02:37 (fifteen years ago) link

several great TFUL282 shows are up now on D!meaD0zen.

sleeve, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:20 (fifteen years ago) link

I think the next one will be best.

Ian Christe, Friday, 1 August 2008 01:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Or equally bad, as the Fellers would say.

Ian Christe, Friday, 1 August 2008 01:48 (fifteen years ago) link

It's tough because some of it is so damn unlistenable, but gotta go w/Mother of All Saints. The first 9 songs (I think) are about as strong a run as I know.

dlp9001, Friday, 1 August 2008 01:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Listening to some of these this morning -- the 1995 one especially is inspired!

Voted for Strangers as its the one I reach for most frequently and has a good balance of different Fellers material on there.

city worker, Friday, 1 August 2008 15:29 (fifteen years ago) link

The first half-dozen songs on "Mother of All Saints" are as good as any they've done, but I don't think I've made it all the way through the album more than a handful of times. "Lovelyville" is much more consistent.

o. nate, Friday, 1 August 2008 15:33 (fifteen years ago) link

I love Strangers cause it starts off great (My Pal the Tortoise, Socket) and ends even better (Cup of Dreams, Operation, Piston and the Shaft, Noble Experiment)

mizzell, Friday, 1 August 2008 15:38 (fifteen years ago) link

I never liked Father or Million Dollars on Admonishing the Bishops that much, but Hurricane is probably the most beautiful song they ever did.

mizzell, Friday, 1 August 2008 15:40 (fifteen years ago) link

My top three would be:
1. Lovelyville
2. Strangers from the Universe
3. Wormed by Leonard

o. nate, Friday, 1 August 2008 15:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Saw them more times then any other band during the 90s. Always thought the records were a bit spotty though, all of them with some amazing songs and some less so. Strangers of the Universe may be considered their indie-rock sellout album or something by some, but it may be their most consistently awesome.

Most of my fave songs are on Wormed by Leonard, but there's to many tracks that I routinely skip on there.

dan selzer, Friday, 1 August 2008 16:24 (fifteen years ago) link

The Fistful of Dollars EP is great, FWIW.

gnarly sceptre, Friday, 1 August 2008 16:33 (fifteen years ago) link

Favorite song is "Waited Too Long" from Funeral Pudding EP.

There were way too little Anne songs IMHO. "Waited Too Long" is a great junkyard breakbeat song with occasional blasts of fuzz bass. Anne's acerbic singing of "BECAAAAAAAAAAAAAZ it's toooOOOOO LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy-t!" is classic.

Mackro Mackro, Friday, 1 August 2008 16:40 (fifteen years ago) link

I Hope It Lands has a wealth of Anne songs, and they are mostly quite lovely.

mizzell, Friday, 1 August 2008 16:42 (fifteen years ago) link

I still have a tape of a radio show I did freshman year in college where I played Waited Too Long mixed out of something, maybe some His Name Is Alive track from King of Sweet. Those were the days. I used to buy all that Amarillo stuff, Heavenly Ten Stems, the Mr. Hageman LP, US Saucer...

dan selzer, Friday, 1 August 2008 16:44 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm playing the banjo right there with you Mackro.

(x-posts)

NickB, Friday, 1 August 2008 16:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Midnight Cowboys was on Amarillo too yes? And Faxed Head, who I never heard.

NickB, Friday, 1 August 2008 16:47 (fifteen years ago) link

can I tell you my favorite concert story of all time? During college I went to the Grog Shop in cleveland to see TFUL and they were great, they played a long version of the theme to Rosemary's Baby. I didn't have a ton of their albums though. After the show was done I turned to my friend and said "that was great, I just wished they played like 1 more song that I know really well, like Narlus Spectre" and the very second I finished saying that...they played Narlus Spectre as an encore.

dan selzer, Friday, 1 August 2008 16:48 (fifteen years ago) link

I think there may have been a few Sun City Girls on Amarillo, though I used to get it mixed up with Abduction, they may have been the same at some point? Also The Three Doctors, Zip Code Rapists, Zip Code Review, the prank phone calls album that's now been issued credited to Neil Hamburger...

dan selzer, Friday, 1 August 2008 16:50 (fifteen years ago) link

turkington reissued (rather than released) "midnight cowboys from ipanema", i think that was the only SCG release on amarillo.

Steve Shasta, Friday, 1 August 2008 17:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Thank you so much for that. I wondered what happened to all those shoeboxes full of DATs and Hugh Swarts' twice-used Skoal Bandits. Just awesome -- the greatness just keeps breaching the levee on that St. Louis show.

Ian Christe, Friday, 1 August 2008 17:56 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, that St. Louis show is the bomb. The sound is so much better than yer average bootleg recording.

sleeve, Saturday, 2 August 2008 02:01 (fifteen years ago) link

I voted Strangers from the Universe, but Admonishing the Bishops is also perfect. I saw them give one of the great performances of the late-20th century at Lounge Ax in Chicago. I belive it was in 1993- the Cocktails opened.

Went with Admonishing The Bishops. It's the perfect EP release.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 23:09 (fifteen years ago) link

this thread made me load up the ipod with thinkin fellers. I think the Operation may be my favorite song ever.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 00:59 (fifteen years ago) link

I voted for Strangers based on my fondness for My Pal The Tortoise but in retrospect Mother of All Saints should win. Hornet's Heart and Tell Me are both amazing. This thread has reminded me how great TFUL 282 are. Are they still around?

Jacobo Rock, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 02:27 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm going for Bob Dinners, which is indeed totally slept on--holy crap, "You in a Movie"! "'91 Dodge Van"!!

Runner-up: Strangers, on the strength of the unbelievable "Socket."

Douglas, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 03:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Funeral Pudding for me, because of "Heavy Head," which is gorgeous.

Michael Train, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 03:07 (fifteen years ago) link

'91 Dodge Van is my very favorite of all their songs by quite a margin. other amazing Bob Dinners songs include the crazed yammering of "The Barker" with its drop dead chorus, the glorious slow distortion of "Holy Ghost", the schizo Sparkle Like A Battery song or whatever the hell it's called, and that killer opening track.

They aren't exactly 'still around", but they play a show or two every 3 or 4 years.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 23:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Mother Of All Saints got the (piston and the) shaft.

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 23:18 (fifteen years ago) link

I Hope It Lands really got shafted. (Granted, it was a bit imbalanced with too much of the practice material me thinks, but still, damn.)

But having a tie at the top, not to mention a really even distribution of votes more or less, is kinda satisfying. :-D

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 23:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Also, the results make an excellent shopping list.

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 23:37 (fifteen years ago) link

(actually Tangle got shafted too, but that's a slippery slope to defending everything here.)

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 23:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Had I seen this poll I would have voted for Admonishing the Bishops

Looks like their full discography (aside from a few singles) is finally available on streaming services.

The two short, unnamed noise tracks on MoAS (originally listed as "...") actually have titles now. Weird.

Punks with Lunch are a rad group btw -- several of my friends are members (xp with the Antifa Meeting Thread) -- besides narcan, they also organize mutual aid efforts and free meals to homeless encampments and other vulnerable populations in Oakland and the greater SF Bay Area.

The trick is to order it and then fill it with a history of the band that is 100% lies.
