weirdly obsessed with EQ-ing, The White Stripes and HIS HOMETOWN!!!! but this is kinda poetic: "fuckin' shotguns with a faint tickle of your symbols"

I stood next to Bob Bobsled when Stereo Total (Bobsled in US) came through Chicago, and he very visibly took their performance personally: i.e., he made smirky little "I rule" faces when they were on and then mob-like "take care of the problem" faces when they weren't doing so well.

Also he looks exactly like Hyde from That 70s Show.

This is some hilarious shit, I have no doubt that it's real.

Jordan, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

But Jack White does mingle in the bar before shows

J Blount, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Hilarious in context -- the opening illustration on the Bobsled site. If it is real, I like how this guy is projecting the subtext of "Oh please oh please Jack White make me your manager I want all your money let me be your loveslave I am not worthy." Which sorta makes me look ridiculous.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Which sorta makes me look ridiculous.

Yes! It *does* make me look ridiculous! And him too, dammit! ;-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

What really gets me is the text on their site: "Bobsled Records, located in Aurora Illinois, is home to the Chamber Strings, the Waxwings, Velvet Crush, Adventures in Stereo, and Stereo Total. Bob Salerno and Jeff Slay are the main men. Indie pop records a specialty. Site includes tour dates, catalog, new releases, artist information, more."

This is repeated about 20 times in succession.

On another note: Aurora, Illinois- isn't that where Wayne and Garth are from?

Nate Patrin, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yes, it's real, I got that this morning... I think it's only a couple weeks old. It was awesome for the band to distribute it to industry types, now whenever I think of Bobsled, I'll remember that letter.

call me crazy, but while this guy clearly lacks social skills, i kind of like his attitude. there's such an overwhelming tolerance for mediocrity and half-assedness in the indie game, something like this is really refreshing. again, he probably ain't the guy to do it, but it'd be nice if someone who cared enough about music to start a label for once actually showed some Barry Gordy hussle to get their bands to look sharp and sound sharper.

What Al said.

And sorry, but I think Wayne and Garth were from Champaign-Urbana.

Curt, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Hold it. Aurora it was. I was thinking of John Belushi's Craig the Mahatma character from National Lampoon Radio.

Party on.

Curt, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i kind of like his attitude

Mm...but I wasn't too sure whether he was worried more about the band or the money he's sunk into the band, if you will.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

He appeared to have enough worry in him to cover both his money and the band. As well as enough abusiveness to sustain a large pimping enterprise.

NONE of these touch the finesse and persistence of the greatest music industry press release and pitch of all times...J & H PRODUCTIONS

But you have to hear the dude's voice to truly appreciate the aura of J & H PRODUCTIONS

(an excerpt is also on the Industry Wannabes and Radio Anomolies CD released by the same folk(s) who release the Celebrities At Their Worst series)

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Wow. The transcript of the J&H tape reads like Genesis.

Lamb Lies Down on Broadway or Invisible Touch?

J Blount, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Kind of reminds me of that reprint of a letter sent to Yo La Tengo which they used on the sleeve for Painful....

one month passes...
Here is the deal, this guy Bob is a moron. I've met him. Before The White Stripes signed the big deals Bobsled records was trying very hard to sign them but Jack White wanted the idiotic Bobsled artwork and logo changed before he was associated with the label. The label said no and the Stripes went on to great stardom - true stroy. The Waxwings record is very good - Bobsled is in financial trouble so this is how he is dealing with it, what an ass! Give Bob a call and let him know how much of a dumb dumb he is: 630-820-8721

fuck my old boots, i'm glad i heard that maiden clip. sound like a good lot to work for.
it's good to know that fairness to their crew is important to them.
harris sounded really concerned that roadie x get a fair shake. that's quite considerate, and more than would even occur to a lot of employers, let alone rockstars.
that said, i can sympathize with nico, if you have to get a message across, you need to actually communicate the information, not just go through the motions.

haha gotta love 'mission from 'arry' which was supposedly taped deliberately by bruce dickinson.
