Song X, which is cheating, I know. But I'm not a huge Metheney fan.

Song X is totes not cheating! It was the only Metheney record I didn't hide until I started hearing the likes of 80/81 and Paralell Realities.

the only Metheney record I didn't hide from company until I started hearing...
So no Bright Size Life option???
Like Minds is technically a Gary Burton album, I think, but if it's here then I'm voting for it. It's not way out, it's just perfect.

i only own one of his albums - the falcon and the snowman album - specifically for the amazing bowie sung track "this is not america". i've only heard one other song of his - the balearic banger "slip away", and i love it, but i guess i'll go w/snowman only out of ignorance

I'm partial to Offramp.
My runners-up include Bright Size Life, Still Life (Talking), and Letter From Home

I'm a big fan of that analog guitar synth sound that he's always using.
"American Garage"

I have heard about six of these forty thousand albums, but I have to admit that those six are mostly pretty good.

As Falls Wichita...
Strange and beautiful.

I'll vote for the only one I have-- "Rejoicing" feat. Haden & Higgins--acoustic gold and synth craziness in equal measures.
― Sparkle Motion, Thursday, 20 December 2007 02:12 (sixteen years ago) link
...and it's not even on the list for some reason. Still gets my vote.
― Sparkle Motion, Thursday, 20 December 2007 02:13 (sixteen years ago) link
Though I've been listening to a shit ton of Offramp ("Barcarole," "Are You Going With Me?" and the title track which is a colossal guitar synth freak out) and Rejoicing with Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins which has a great mix of atmospheric, extremely melodic straight ahead jazz and several awesome guitar synth tracks...
Xpost obv.

"The Calling" = awesome
― Sparkle Motion, Thursday, 20 December 2007 02:20 (sixteen years ago) link
Likewise "Waiting For An Answer"--all harmonic-y bowed bass and guitar swells--and "Story From a Stranger"...

Witchita Falls is the only great album from Metheney.

Another that should be added to this list is Question & Answer with Dave Holland and Roy Haynes. Great straight-up jazz with some of Pat's most burning guitar.

I have been unable to get off the fence about this guy pretty much since I first heard him 20-ish years ago, but he has the best guitar faces

My love and respect for Metheny has really grown in recent years. He keeps cranking out music, but never shies away from experimentation and innovation.
