Ratt: C or D?

Confession time again: when I was just starting to get into music seriously, I won a contest at our local radio station, and my prize was MY CHOICE of any LP I could think of and that they could get. While I'd certainly have given them more of a challenge even a few short years later, I opted for Iron Maiden's Powerslave. When they told me they were unable to get their hands on it, my second choice was Out of the Cellar by RATT. Needless to say, it was awwwwful, except for the single, which was okay. I seem to recall liking it a little bit more because I remember there was somehow a Milton Berle connection.

classic

The squabbling and infighting over the last few years has been completely hilarious. Also Pearcy now looks kind of like a refrigerator-shaped Michael Jackson. Classic.

"Round and Round" sounds a little bit like Alice Cooper; I played it a couple times when I used to dj. The record was worth the 99cents I paid for it... I don't think I ever listened to any other song on it though.

Damn straight. Metal Sludge has all the gory details, but you'll have to do some archive spelunking.

they still rock the county fair circuit probably

Several years ago (probably back around '96 or so), one of my ex- college roommates sent me a mixed tape. The very opening track? "Lay It Down" by Ratt. It also had "I Wanna Shake You" by Andrew Ridgely, and "Who's Sorry Now?" by whoever sings Who's Sorry Now.

Anyway, "Lay it Down": classssssssssssssssic. So is "Round and Round". And maybe "Way Cool Junior", by a hair (yuk yuk yuk). Okay, maybe not. The rest is probably shit, admittedly.

Joe, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

...but if you go see the Ratt that's rokkin' that county fair circuit, you won't see them with their original singer. No. You will see them with a guy named Jizzy Pearl. Let me just repeat that last bit: Jizzy Pearl. Oh, man.

John Darnielle, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

You seem to know a little tooooo much about Ratt and the county fair circuit there, John.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

They had a following in my Grade 3 class. The only song I remember went "I can feel it in your blood/You need me like a drug." I hated it. "Powerslave" was much better.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh man Sundar Darkane's cover of "Powerslave" on the new Maiden tribute is soooooooo good.

John Darnielle, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

If I had gotten Powerslave instead of that Ratt album, things might have turned out much, much differently for me.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yeah, Ratt would have probably turned me into a Cure fan too.

Someone was just telling me about that Maiden tribute last night. (At my birthday party, BTW. I turned 23, which I think I forgot to advise ILx of. Perhaps auspiciously, it was a record 28 degrees, the warmest day of the year so far.) He said he'd lend it to me.

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Hey, I had _Powerslave_ and I still turned into a Cure fan!

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"Hi. I'm Jizzy Pearl. You might remember me from such bands as Love/Hate and L.A. Guns."

Apparently they're touring with Pearcy this summer, first time since 2000 or something.

I watched their Behind the Music today. Their original bassist said that Pearcy rewrote lyrics (to at least one song, not the one Dave Q. mentions at the top of this thread) so that they didn't actually make sense, but to satisfy himself that he could "relate" to them.

"Nobody Rides for Free" is so underrated.

And funnily enough, the lyrics to it don't make sense, but Pearcy DOES seem to really relate to them. And I, in turn, end up relating to them a little as well.

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 24 May 2007 03:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh and name of song in my post was "Lack of Communication."

I liked them a lot, even though I was a college-radio DJ boy and fan of much of what went along with that. "Round and Round" was pretty undeniable. But then, I was alla time tryna get "Killed by Death" and "Word Up" added.

NAMM is always a blast. Where else can you smoke a doob with the drummer from slaughter while watching a showcase from blues saraceno.

chaki, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 17:32 (sixteen years ago) link

out of the cellar is seems like in many ways the classic of LA pop metal...it's really tuneful, RATT wrote *great* songs, and they just seemed to be the sort of nexus of everything, like they had a little more metal darkness than, say poison, a little of the scumminess of motley crue, but not as much...also sometimes there's a certain almost melancholy about that album, some of the melodies hit me as kind of not sad exactly, but mixed feelings, not just the fun party band....like the way the melody is for "true love'll find a way just give it time" in "round and round"

The "Round and Round" video, one of the worst ever made, was the work of none other than Don Letts.

Don't forget the chick slowly becoming more RAWK as she climbs towards the attic.

We need a Ratt vs. Dokken thread.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 22:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Y'know how the Rolling Stones covered Rufus Thomas' "Walkin' The Dog" on their debut album; and ten years later Aerosmith likewise recorded "Walkin' The Dog" on their own debut, and were deemed "2nd-rate Rolling Stones imitators"; and then ten years after that Ratt recorded "Walkin' The Dog" for their debut EP, and were called "the poor man's Aerosmith"?...and then 1993 rolls around, grunge has happened, and the tradition ends there. No way will D-Generation or Rancid or whoever find a pouty lead singer and record "Walkin' The Dog" for their debut album and risk being dismissed as "watered-down Ratt."

Let's all take a moment out of our crazy lives and all this political stuff going on in the world to salute rocker John Bon Jovi for his long-overdue induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame (Cleaveland, OH)! John has been rockin' into our lives for many years and I think we all owe him and his band a debt of gratitude. It truly is the little moments in life that matter, and BonJovi has provided us with so many of the best ones, from hits such as "Living with a Prayer" to the life-affirming classic "The Summer of 1969," and even during his more melancholly moments such as "Pink Houses," John has kept the good times a rockin and a rollin through the good times and bad! We salute you for a successful career, Bon Jovey, and we know you'rte going to enjoy your stay at the Hall for many years to come. After all, like the song goes, "we've got to hold on to what we've got, It doesn't make a difference if we make it or not"
