hmmm, well I guess it makes some sort of weird sense. It's like if Nikki Sudden left Swell Maps and then became a Tony award winning singer in broadway musicals.

His first single 'Combien de Temps' might be worth checking out though. The type of elegant French pop Spencher Chow might dig.

God, the more I think about it, it's even weirder than the path Scritti Politti's Green Gartside took.

It's sort of like how Nikki Sudden left Swell Maps, though, to become the kind of singer he is now.

"Combien de Temps" wasn't the first single, unless it was a remake like "Der Weg Zu Zweit" and I don't know about it. Wasn't the first solo single "Sweetheart"? I like "Sweetheart" quite a bit, but then I don't like any albums up until "My Place" and "Engelberg", which I think are okay.

They should also be called "Käserock" instead!

Pangolino 2, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 12:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah sorry, did some homework and according to AMG 'Combien de Temps' is off his third album. I guess it was the single that established him in France.

I can't even remember how "Combien de Temps" goes - I bought that album in Germany to hear the remake of "Der Weg Zu Zweit", even though I really didn't like his previous album. I didn't keep it for so long because I was so disappointed.

Does that comp have "Träume Mit Mir"? A great track that might get folks on the dance floor if dropped at the right moment.

And Nikki Sudden is living in Berlin now.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:36 (eighteen years ago) link

I think it's got everything except "Ein Tanz Mit Dem Tod" and I'm not sure if it has the version of "Schlachtet!" that's on the B-side of "Träume Mit Mir". "Träume Mit Mir" is my favourite Grauzone song.

And do yourself a favour and try to find Berlin 80, a nice little anthology of films from the Berlin scene. Also comes with a CD.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:01 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm always holding Berlin 80 in the store before putting it back down at the last minute. It is pricey

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:40 (eighteen years ago) link

What does Berlin 80 have on it? I've never heard of it.

Pangolino 2, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Videos are Berlin 80 are fantastic.

"Eisbar" has gotten a lot of coverage miles -- Prisonshake, Giddy Motors and Sightings have all done that song, pretty good considering it's a tune about a polar bear.

Excuse me while i kiss you, Donut. I discovered Grauzone's Die Sunrise Tapes through this thread and it's been a complete and utter revelation! It blows me away, every day still.

I haven't heard a whole lot of Grauzone, but I agree they're good.

you heard Eisbar for the first time ever, or it was the first time you heard it played in a bar?

great song

(first time I heard it was on Optimo's How to Kill the DJ)

dmr, Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:40 (twelve years ago) link

just heard it for the first time ever, I don't know all that much about music

my friend just sent me this in response:

Starter was a minimal synth group from Switzerland that featured Claudine Chirac from Grauzone, Francis Foss and Jet Harbour.

nine years pass...

An overdue revive to note both a regular version of the album

https://wrwtfww.com/album/grauzone

...and a fancier variants with live tracks

https://wrwtfww.com/album/limited-edition-40-years-anniversary-box-set

...are now both out.

Nice review with some appropriate context

one month passes...

Very much enjoying the WRWTFWW reissue of 'Grauzone'. The liner notes emphasise how much the band were listening to The Cure at the time, and this always sounded very likely.

Belated recognition today for Stephan Eicher, who has been awarded the Grand Prix Music 2021 for his 'unmistakable voice'. This award is presented by the Swiss Federal Office of Culture and is worth 100,000 Swiss francs.
