it's funny because i spent much of the weekend thinking hard about wilmot and what it means. see, i spent most of friday listening to screamadelica, which meant i spent a lot of time listening to the track "loaded", which basically pivots on the fantastically catchy horn hook ... i think the short story in the haunted dancehall booklet for "wilmot" must be about weatherall's anxiety after producing screamadelica ...

"it was the trumpet line that did it. nevermind chasing after etheral angels or earthly skirt. chase that tune, scour the shacks, pester the sound boys"

i guess it functions as a sort of therapy for weatherall. first by allowing him to reconnect with the grubby ground-level roots of soundboys and acetate cut in backyard sheds. second, by relating his need to "chase that tune" ("loaded"?) to the more universal crate digging impulse. he sort of integrates these two urges by using the hook from a 30s calypso tune about drug addiction to anchor the central song on what i've always regarded as his "comedown" album, not so much in the sense of post-club comedown but more in the context of the serious drug rehab he was going through (or had just finished, i guess)

I love the "reggae" version of Wilmot that they play on the video. Is this version available on CD?

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 8 November 2004 08:22 (nineteen years ago) link

everyone go to slsk and get the bootleg of wilmot with $.50 rapping over it.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 8 November 2004 08:47 (nineteen years ago) link

the orig track is "bucovina" by ian oliver feat. shantel, as somewhat redundantly detailed here:

sabres of paradise - "wilmot" ... ian oliver feat. shantel - "bucovina" ... mighty dub katz - "son of wilmot" ... ??? ... ???

Tracer Hand, Monday, 23 June 2008 23:19 (fifteen years ago) link

nice! on my way home now. i still want to hear that sped-up latin version, it's probably one of the bazillion remixes of bucovina

So did Wilmouth Houdini do the actual original tune or what? Incidentally his version of Rum & Coca-Cola was my favourite old song of 2011.

as far as i can tell he wrote the track although he has a few that sound exactly like that one^ bar the lyrics.

Single version (of the SoP track) >>>>>>>>> album version.

ledge, Monday, 26 October 2015 10:31 (eight years ago) link

Seriously does anyone rate the album version? It's like the single version emaciated. They start off the same but after the first minute the album version does the re-rewind thing and then... nothing, except the main horn theme and the bassline. No organ counterpart, no guitar, no lunatic scatting, and no spiralling drum fill. Never really listened to the album before so it was a weird (though easily rectified) disappointment when it came up on spotify discover.

ledge, Monday, 26 October 2015 22:52 (eight years ago) link

god, i used to listen to this on a loop. yes, the lp version is denuded of everything that makes the single version so triumphant and messed up.

Fizzles, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 06:16 (eight years ago) link

fuck why did you have bring up wilmot.

Fizzles, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 07:18 (eight years ago) link

I like the album version and think it fits better - the single version would be too jarring in the context of the rest of the album, though its one of the weaker tracks on there

This album holds up really well for me, particularly the last few tracks

saer, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 07:59 (eight years ago) link

I see your point. Don't know what to do if I play the album again - which I probably will. Might have to skip it and have a separate Wilmot moment another time.

Credible hypothesis: 'Theme' is responsible for the rise of Mark Ronson and his ilk?

cannot recommend the shantel version highly enough, it has become my favorite version of this song

the tambourine coming in around :50 is honestly one of my all-time "yippeeeeeeeee" moments, just massive grin no matter where i am

Wilmoth Houdini's Uncle Jo' Gimme Mo (cf. vahid upthread) uses the same melody but the trumpet sample (or recreation of) comes from his Black but Sweet:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxS3g3XHV34

I leave it to someone else to determine how many other of his songs use the melody.
