There were at least three masterpieces on the last album. The current one has better cover imagery than anything else, I think.

DMX = Street. 12 year old kids = street. Therefore 12 year old kids = DMX by mathematical derivation? That's the idea..... The "Great Depression" was ok but only at its most gritty and intense. DMX is such a purely visceral rapper for me which is why the hammering of "Who we Be" hit off so well (lots of people hate it for its bluntness but I don't think people should expect anything subtle from this guy). On the other hand, he probably shouldn't try to do party jams or misogyny tracks best suited for somebody like Ludacris.

I like it when DMX cries in front of his audiences.

DMX is along the same lines as KID Rock to me at this point. He makes it a point to let the world know who he is by screaming his name in almost every song he does. Like the world doesn't already know who he is, does he need to re-iterate? Do DMX and Kid Rock have some kind of insecurities, and it makes them feel better to hear there name?

Ludacris = misogynist? I don't see it but you're right about party tracks and club joints - DMX is all about "the real", whatever that is this year. How you feel about DMX = how you feel about ruff men who are too tuff to make their voices sound pleasing. And Dan you're just jealous of his ROCK HARD PECS.

DMX is all about "the real"

We need more musicians of all stripes dealing with the fake.

My girlfriend says his new thing isn't even music. It's just yelling. I still don't get that. I would have never thought of that. It sounds like music to me.

Sure it's music. It's just really really shitty music. (NB: I like some of his older stuff; the new one is just ASS.)

I am not jealous of his rock-hard pecs. Well okay, I am, but I still like "Who We Be".

DMX's new shit is just GARBAGE, thats it..........

i can't WAIT to go listen to it when i get home.

nothing will ever top my mom constantly singing "y'all gonna make me lose my mind" in a julie andrews voice, circa summer 2000.

jess, that song, and a few others off that album, crack me up just as much as that Shaggy song, "It wasn't me" (is that the correct title?). Funny stuff. Not sure why. DMX cracks me up, anyway, even when he's being all hard. That might be when he's the funniest, actually.

i really do find dmx funny/enjoyable in the same way that i enjoy early swans, rollins-era black flag, etc. it's all so earnestly over- the-top that it fills me with cathartic glee.

jess, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well, you might just have explained my own emotions to me. I don't know if DMX strikes me as a catharsis and early Swans is downright oppressive. With DMX I sing along and crack myself up. With Swans, I cower and take it; it's almost masochistic. Swans is wallowing in grief and feeling how good it is to feel something so clearly. DMX is the opposite for me. It's ridiculously over the top, though, like Swans, and there is probably a relationship there that says something about what entertains me. I'm a big fan of Elvis and he was pretty over the top. Different way, though.
