yeah a great group, i like all their stuff. sudden on his own has been very good too, one of the major minor one trick ponies of rock.

I used to work w/ Epic Soundtracks back in the day. He was a mad keen record collector - had more Big Star bootlegs than the whole of Teenage Fanclub put together, and was also v. partial to a bit of Brian Wilson. He only started talking to me after I recognised a Laura Nyro alb he was buying in! Great drummer.

oh, like you even have to ask me.

one year passes...
I just got Jane from Occupied Europe and it's blowing my mind. I like the way it's mixed, the way the piano in the second or third song just jumps out way louder than everything else all of a sudden, and the way it's sequenced to start with the songier songs and move to the weirder, instrumental stuff. It's like the first three Wire albums all smashed into one.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 10 April 2003 12:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

i never noticed this thread before, so: CLASSIC. "vertical slum" is indeed in the top...5...punk songs ever written. maybe top 2.

your null fame (yournullfame), Thursday, 10 April 2003 12:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

and don't forget "Let's Build A Car"

I love all of their stuff but agree that Jane From Occupied is the finest and most underrated (though not here, apparently) - both Train Out Of It and A Trip To Marineville are also essential, and Collision Time is nothing to sneeze at, either!

they RULE. So, classic.

Andrew, did you ever know Caroline, Epic's posh art kollege girlfriend? She was my housemate in the early '90s, moved to Russia and apparently he never got over it.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

Classic. Though I'm not much of a fan of the non-songy experimental stuff. "Harmony In Your Bathroom" might be my favorite.

I only like Read about seymour of what ive heard. But i may change my mind.

Jens (brighter), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 05:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hi Suzy, no I didn't know Caroline - think I got to know Epic after they split up ('92 on?). He later went out with R*th and with P*tra, both of whom I did know, and wrote at least one song abt R that I know of.

After I posted on this thread (nearly two years ago - Jesus!) a writer from 'Strange Things' mag got in touch w/ me abt Epic - dunno if his article ever got published, tho'.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 05:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

I adore that particular eerie-as-fuck mood that postpunk bands like Swell Maps, This Heat & Alternative TV evoke.

The first song on 'Jane' sounds so ahead of it's time! like triphop or something

Keith McD (Keith McD), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

one year passes...
Been relistening to the albums lately. It's interesting how they now all of a sudden make a perfect *sense* somehow, but for reasons I'm not fully satisfied in capturing in words yet.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 03:47 (nineteen years ago) link

obviously a great great band - i don't know if they were ahead of their time, but it's funny how their kraut/prog/punk mix sounds hip today. i guess hundreds of bands would die for songs like _robot factory_ or _full moon_, still it is very hard to sound as naive and pure as the maps.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 07:33 (nineteen years ago) link

I recently dropped the bucks for the Munster reissue of the 5 7" box set + poster.. these pretty much take care of all the stuff that didn't make the vinyl versions of the Alive records comps (most importantly, "Let's Build A Car") The 7"'s are 180 gram, too. Very good job done on the singles.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 08:14 (nineteen years ago) link

The 7"'s are 180 gram, too.

How thick are they?! I gotta get that box, cuz I have the Alive LPs, too.

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 30 March 2005 11:17 (nineteen years ago) link

so classic. And I have to plug the recent Secretly Canadian reissues, which are fantastic -- and finally allowed me to have an affordable copy of Jane from Occupied Europe which, I concur with all y'all, is the finest, and I think one of the greatest full-lengths ever.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 13:03 (nineteen years ago) link

those reissues are a real treat. lovingly packaged and with insightful interviews: and the photos! the maps look almost painfully young and wide-eyed.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 14:24 (nineteen years ago) link

"Jane From Occupied Europe" is like a post-post-punk "Pink Flag" - Crazy fragments that start to blend together into an amazing artwork.

Did they reissue them on vinyl??

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 14:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Listening to "Full Moon" and "Doomette" just now was most calming. (Hurrah for Train Out of It.)

Okay, clarification time -- as I mentioned way above, I have the Mute reissues of Train, Jane and Marineville plus the Collision Time Revisited comp, so what exactly am I missing that's not included on those four?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 14:34 (nineteen years ago) link

I had the Mute CD reissues of "Jane", "Marineville", and "Train Out of It" that I picked up used back in 1994 or so. The only that I found myself listening to with any regularity was "Marineville", so I finally sold the other two. I could never really get into "Jane" - it seemed just noisey, slapdash, no melody or hooks, perversely ugly. I could appreciate the experimentality of it, but just didn't really enjoy listening to it. I preferred bands that took the experimental approach and blended it with more tunefulness. However, the Soft Pink Truth cover of "Real Shocks" is classic.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 14:37 (nineteen years ago) link

For the last 3-4 months, I've had the SC re-issue of Marineville in my 3-disc changer (w/ Converge & the Blood Brothers). It's set to wake me up every morning. Every few days, I wake up to that 30-second-long track about the corner grocer or whatever selling cheese and TVs, and then try going back to sleep, and then hear the really loud NARNARNILANARNAR guitar riff of the next track, and then I'm up for good. (I hope I'm talking about Marineville!)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 14:37 (nineteen years ago) link

I never realized how much the Swell Maps were like Can until I got around to buying/listening to the reissues. So singular and weird. They just don't make 'em like they used to, people.

This should probably go on the music for running thread since this reminds me I go running to the S'Maps all the time.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 14:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Ned, I'm not sure what's on the Mute issues, but on the Secretly Canadian discs of Marineville and Jane there are several bonus tracks, and some fantastic liner notes -- interviews about each track -- and photos.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 15:04 (nineteen years ago) link

I never realized how much the Swell Maps were like Can until I got around to buying/listening to the reissues. So singular and weird. They just don't make 'em like they used to, people.

They don't remind me much of Can at all. The closest Can got to the noisy experimentalism of Swell Maps is the second half of Tago Mago. That seems to be what the Maps were trying for on Jane, though with more attitude and less musicality.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 15:17 (nineteen years ago) link

They remind me of Can all the time, what can I say. I guess it's the 'anything goes' stance as much as the krautrock vibes.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 15:21 (nineteen years ago) link

"Jane" totally reminds me of Can, too -- not just the experimentalism and the rhythms, but a similarly personalized use of space around the sounds, if that makes any sense. (No, it doesn't, I know)

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 15:35 (nineteen years ago) link

I cannot frickin' believe that there's a Honda commercial with a loop from "BLAM!!"

I was never quite sure if that was Blam! or not in that ad, couldn't quite believe it myself and wasted a lot of time searching message boards commercials trying to get confirmation.

Anyhoo, Swell Maps = total classic. The reissues are fantastic. When I first heard Collision Time Revisited I couldn't understand how I'd never heard of this band before (and the only reason I even heard that was because a Sonic Youth obsessed friend picked it up for Thurston Moore's liner notes), then I tried to actually find some of their music. It took me over four years to finally find a battered copy of Marineville and even then I could only get it by trading stuff.

Graeme (Graeme), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 15:35 (nineteen years ago) link

oh god, "full moon" gives me chills. it stomps. and when he overextends his voice actin' goofy and involuntarily coughs and goes into the yell it's one of the greatest vocal moments recorded ever. i still wish they would've just rereleased _collision time revisited_ which is the most comprehensive collection in one big package. the alive ones are nice though. my favorite tune may still be "bleinheim shots" from _jane..._.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 15:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Never been convinced these guys were much more than average. Guess it's time to listen again. Did someone say Can?! I sure don't remember them that way.

The bonus tracks on the Secretly Canadian and Mute reissues are different!

Still no sign of a Whatever Happens Next... reissue. That's a crime.

I simply do not understand why more people don't know about this band.

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 17:11 (nineteen years ago) link

not enough folks paid attention to bobby nastonovich's "we're a swell maps rip-off band" namechecks back in the day i guess. pay attention, people!

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 17:43 (nineteen years ago) link

OK, I have the Mute CD versions of Marinaville and Jane.

What bonus tracks do the SC reissues have the the Mute ones don't?

Because, to me, it seems pointless to get the SC reissues, since the Mute issues have tons more bonus tracks... and I was assuming the stuff on the Alive comps would cover the bonus track material on the SC reissues, but I could be wrong!

Bimble, you should get one of the Alive comps.. either International Rescue or Sweep The Desert will do... The former is more garagey, and the latter is more "proto-indie". Both are mutually exclusive, and make good cheap primers.

It's on the Internation Rescue CD (but not the LP configuration).

Vic Funk, Friday, 1 April 2005 04:37 (nineteen years ago) link

"Let's Build a Car" is a bonus track on the Mute Jane From Occupied Europe WITHOUT the fuck up on the intro guitar fuzz. For some reason, the version of that song on the International Rescue CD comp *and* the Munster 7" box set has the fuzz part missing the first few notes or so.. so you have to kind find yourself into the beat of it.

‘Mayday Signals’ by Swell Maps is a compilation of previously unreleased material. One of two surviving members, Jowe Head, has plundered his archives to find a whole host of treasures by the influential DIY punk band. Among the highlights are demo versions of ‘Read About Seymour’ and ‘Dresden Style’.

CP Radio Gorgeous (Colonel Poo), Monday, 3 May 2021 10:18 (two years ago) link

Not seeing a cd version which would have been handy. But so would Cherry Red compiling one of its Punk multi-lp cd sets on the band.
There were cd remasters of the 2 main lps on Secretly Canadian a few years ago but it was mainly the non remastered Mute version that was visibly around.

Discogs has the Mute version of teh cds listed as RM which i thought was remastered. Ones i have say 1989 on th eback, not that the 2 are mutually exclusive just would prefer a fresher transfer.
THink I found some cheapish copies of teh other remaster though.

Stevolende, Monday, 3 May 2021 16:17 (two years ago) link

I recall some grumbling from somewhere on interwebs that the Mute cds had some reverb added as well. Not sure if that is trur but comparing select tracks to the International Rescue comp they do sound "roomier".
So, yes, to fresh transfers.
...and a cd copy of Whatever Happens Next with extra peel sessions.

ringworm, Wednesday, 5 May 2021 15:38 (two years ago) link

Ok, in case anyone else has been confused by their catalog, here's what I've discovered:

The 1991 Mute CD reissues of "A Trip To Marineville", "In Jane From Occupied Europe" and "Train Out Of It" collect almost all of their officially released catalog. These are the tracks that aren't included:
Steven Does - from the 7" that came with "Jane"
English Verse / Monologues - from "Real Shocks" 7"
St. Saviour's Road / Blues No. 2: Beatle Bonfire / Fashion Cult / Texas - from "Collision Time Revisited"
Black Velvet (remix) / Dresden Style - from "International Rescue"
Cave Mines - from "Sweep The Desert"

Not yet officially released are 3 Peel sessions from 1978-80. These are great, someone should put them out. I've also got a couple of tracks they did for WMRS in 1979.

"Mayday Signals" is entirely previously unreleased material as far as I can tell. A couple of these tracks ("Armadillo", "Bandits 1-5") later appeared on a Peel session. Others are demo or alternate versions:
"City Boys - Dresden Style", "Fashion Cult", "International Rescue", "Off The Beach", "Ripped And Torn", "Vertical Slum", "Whatever Happens Next", "Read About Seymour"
There's lots of short bits (12 tracks are 1:30 or less), a bunch of noise collages that aren't my taste, and then there's some great new songs, which are. I'll likely cherry pick the best stuff for my digital library.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 6 May 2021 21:34 (two years ago) link

"Armadillo" presumably = Winter Rainbow (on the International Rescue comp)
