Maxwell's "This Woman's Work": opinions?

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 01:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Embrya is one of the most pretentious albums I own, but good to fuck to, to be blunt. All the song titles feature colons and subordinate clauses.

Of course the Bingo is down with Maxwell. Urban Hang Suite is one of the best "fuck" albums. Especially "Ascension (don't ever wonder)".

urban hang suite - absolutely fckng brill-o.
he kind of 'did a lauren hill' and went from ace soul
to abject pretension from album 1 to 2. i haven't however
listened to 'embrya' all the way through it has to be said.

So he's popular with the fornicators.

There's a surprise.

Saw him driving along Brixton Road in a banana-yellow Ferrari back in '97. I think that year was his pinnacle.

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I fucking LOVE Embrya. You should own it.

I enjoy both those covers but I find him a little tame overall, tries a little too hard. "nice guy."

I rediscovered "Urban Hang Suite" last night while attempting to make a baby. Too bad I only made it through song 1.

That's an intro, Chris.

it's D.C. man. i get genuinely disturbed walking around that city contemplating how much expensive and/or well-financed everything is.

2 Celloz (some dude), Friday, 21 December 2012 00:00 (eleven years ago) link

much

2 Celloz (some dude), Friday, 21 December 2012 00:00 (eleven years ago) link

It's a DC inaugural event at that. I bought a ticket for one outside the event years ago (featuring old soul acts) and then wrote a review of it for Dave Marsh's rap & roll zine. It was cheaper than this (an exception to the rule)
