wow i didn't know this was out yet...man i gotta hit a store!

Forks, any other reactions after you've listened to it? The first two Devin albums are amazing....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 18:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah Matt, it continues to sparkle. I'm leaning toward best effort to date.
Posting a standout track at the Hut on Friday.

three weeks pass...
Jesus, so NOBODY bought this?
I defy you to name a better hip hop album released this year.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 05:38 (nineteen years ago) link

i listened to it today and really wanna buy it. "what?" is great. It's like what Prince Paul should be producing but isn't.

Symplistic (shmuel), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 05:49 (nineteen years ago) link

I still say Madvillain but regardless this is incredibly great yeah.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 05:50 (nineteen years ago) link

My argument would be that Madvillain's already got his props. This should be FLYING off shelves. Why isn't it? Am I insane?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 06:06 (nineteen years ago) link

well, for one thing, the title sucks

Symplistic (shmuel), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 06:08 (nineteen years ago) link

no argument. one wonders what the hell he was thinking.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 06:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Steve "flash" Juon's theory: While he's certainly not underexposed thanks to his cameo appearances on everything from Dr. Dre to De La Soul, he's not exactly overexposed either. Rap-A-Lot Records makes sure his albums are distributed in stores nationally and worldwide, but his largest fanbase continues to be in the Southern U.S., particularly in and around his native Houston, Texas. Whether he gets recognized for it or not though, albums like his self-titled debut and "Just Tryin' Ta Live" are not just among the best kept secrets of the South but of hip-hop as a whole

My theory is that funny rap generally doesn't sell too well and is difficult to market, since the backpackers care more about "innovation" than humor, and gangsta fans don't buy the Dude's hippie shit. But I like the funny.

Symplistic (shmuel), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 06:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Judging from most kid-targeted food packaging, I'd say that he should try selling his CD in a supermarket where children can guilt parents into impulse-buying it. mmm, X-Treme jello.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 06:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Also, "Doobie Ashtray" = all-time classic.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 06:23 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, it's one of those songs that's as much fun to sing as to listen to

Symplistic (shmuel), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 06:26 (nineteen years ago) link

The new album is less funny than just brilliant.
But I hear you. I just hurt for the children.

Haven't heard it and now I want to, but I'll name a hip-hop album that might be just as good: Chingo Bling, The Tamale Kingpin. Heard this yet, Mr. Tofu?

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 19:51 (nineteen years ago) link

I have not and will be checking my inbox for proof of said awesomeness.
What's dude's deal?
And Begs, you should slip by my site and get the two funk tracks I have up. They're crackaslackalackin.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 20:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 09:26 (nineteen years ago) link

II Tha X-Treme is the hip-hop equivalent
of Prick Decay "Cuba, Planet Cuba."
Only 2 albums that induce stone-cold sober
hallucinations. Try 'em together at once.

sorry forks, I'll try to send it tonight. (my work computer doesn't do gmail, dammit!)

in conversation, an ilxor once argued that i was "too obsessed" with devin. i reject that argument now as i did then.
