Embrace 'Fireworks'

Manics 'Motorcycle Emptiness' (possibly not anymore now it's on an advert?)

tricky to determine what would be the top pick for Radiohead or St Etienne

Half Man Half Biscuit- A Country Practice

(I'm not sure it would actually *win* a poll but it would place very high as everyone's favourite B-Side)

Placebo- Every You, Every Me

Actually these days I think it's "Special K" -- definitely the crowd reaction highlight of the Wednesday show. A lot of people I know who are fans simply adore that song.

Nirvana - "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

I like "Endless Nameless" more. People just like radio hits.

Aja (aja), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:18 (twenty years ago) link

Aja the point is not 'what would win in an open poll of everybody' but 'what would the fan club vote for?' - actually with Nirvana it surely would still be SLTS.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:22 (twenty years ago) link

On my hazy, hazy days as a Placebo fan forum member (yes, I know), Every You, Every Me won the massive 90 song vs song battle between all the Plakky-bo tunes. It may well have changed in the previous three years, admittedly.

'Every You Every Me' is the worst Placebo song i ever heard and i never understand the love for it

REM- Nightswimming

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:34 (twenty years ago) link

Country Feedback surely?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:35 (twenty years ago) link

Patti Smith: Dancing Barefoot was voted #1 by fans when they were compiling 'Land', whereas if she means anything at all to the public at large, it'd be Because The Night. Or something off Horses. I guess.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:37 (twenty years ago) link

REM- Nightswimming

That must be true because this dj that was a really big fan of REM said that he was going to play his favorite swong by his favorite band and he played "Nightswimming".

I like "Radio Free Europe" the most.

Aja (aja), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:38 (twenty years ago) link

The poll I found had "Country Feedback" second, Tom.

Pixies - Motorway To Roswell

Chris Jones (Crackity Jones), Friday, 28 November 2003 19:42 (twenty years ago) link

You'd be amazed by how many hardcore U2 fans count "Please" as their favorite U2 song.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 28 November 2003 20:14 (twenty years ago) link

Mine is "New Years Day".

Aja (aja), Friday, 28 November 2003 20:16 (twenty years ago) link

duran duran - save a prayer (maybe dee will correct me on this. i was also thinking of make me smile (come up and see me), but that's a cover.)

youn, Friday, 28 November 2003 20:20 (twenty years ago) link

When I used to run a U2 fansite *multiple shudders*, I remember "Please" coming out pretty often as well as a favorite. Terrible song though.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Friday, 28 November 2003 21:49 (twenty years ago) link

I like "Please," but I've never quite understood why so many hardcore fans love it so much. There's a lot better U2 songs out there. There's much better songs on the Pop album alone...

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 28 November 2003 22:14 (twenty years ago) link

Weezer's Pinkerton. Please don't hurt me.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 28 November 2003 22:26 (twenty years ago) link

I have a feeling it's because "Please" is kind of a relatively normal U2 song, stuck on their most overlooked (and arguably strangest) album. Obscure but reminiscent of their older stuff = fan favorite

Vinnie (vprabhu), Friday, 28 November 2003 22:28 (twenty years ago) link

Embrace actualyl = "Brothers & Sisters". I know, I am their fan (lapsed).

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 28 November 2003 22:34 (twenty years ago) link

isn't country feedback the band's stated fave from 'out of tunes' and this is why everyone claims to like it, this despite it being crap?

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 28 November 2003 22:45 (twenty years ago) link

Keith M, I really don't think it would matter if Stipe loved or hated that song, it's just really popular among the fans. I like it a lot - it makes a lot of sense to me. It just has that "favorite song" feeling to it.

But obviously, you've got it in for them, so why do I bother?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 28 November 2003 23:29 (twenty years ago) link

I never knew that about what the band said, but "Country Feedback" has always been one of my favourite R.E.M. songs. I don't agree that it's crap (obviously).

David A. (Davant), Friday, 28 November 2003 23:31 (twenty years ago) link

Along with "Nightswimming" and "Country Feedback," "World Leader Pretend" and "Find The River" scored very high when fans were requesting songs via the REM website on their last tour.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 28 November 2003 23:34 (twenty years ago) link

Another reason "Country Feedback" is very popular among fans - it's waaaaay better live.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 28 November 2003 23:35 (twenty years ago) link

Blur fan favorite - "This Is A Low," obviously!

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 28 November 2003 23:39 (twenty years ago) link

i haven't got it in for them, i just remember it becoming very popular on prodigy back in the dark ages when the band proclaimed it their favorite from that mediocre record. kahoutek should be the fan fave, but maybe that's one for those who have it in for them since the band doesn't like that album.

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 29 November 2003 00:25 (twenty years ago) link

Pinkerton owns this thread.

Mister Snrub (MisterSnrub), Saturday, 29 November 2003 00:29 (twenty years ago) link

Weird. "Kahoutek" has always been one of my least favorite REM album tracks, ever since I was 12. I love Fables though, and so does REM. There have been a fair few interviews recently where Mike Mills in particular picks that as one of his favorite REM albums. There were playing a lot from that record on their last tour - "Feeling Gravity's Pull," "Maps & Legends," "Life And How To Live It," "Driver 8," and I'm pretty sure "Green Grow The Rushes."
