Among other things because he looked so cute singing the Kylie Minogue part at the Bad Seeds show I saw back in 1998 or so.

coolest cheek bones in rock (at least they were in the 80's) = classic all the way!

BB == Udo Lindenberg, rev. ed. => dud

In a spin article about the Butthole Surfers, I remember reading about Gibby Haynes freaking out on acid at some European festival. He was running around naked and basically harassing people at random, and he tried to mess with Blixa onstage while the Bad Seeds were performing. Blixa promptly kicked the ugly American in the privates with a pointy leather boots, after which Gibby collasped. Therefore: CLASSIC.

hahaha!!! someone should lock this thread now just in case someone says 'dud'.

I was listening to 'Silence is Sexy' at a friend's house a few months ago, quite enjoying it. That same evening I went to a Japanese restaurant and Blixa came and sat down next to me. He was dressed all in black. We got to reminiscing about the first time I'd met him, back in 1987 on a Primal Scream tour. He misheard my name as 'Mormons', so he called me that all night. I called him 'The Pope', cos he seemed at the time like Berlin's punky pontiff.

Now he has houses in Berlin and China. His wife (who soon arrived at the restaurant) is Chinese, and beautiful. I've seen him around since then, at art openings and stuff. Last time he was wearing a straw boater, looking like a raffish minstrel. I'm not saying dud.

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 16 November 2003 22:42 (twenty years ago) link

blixa was a classic, but now he's a gigantic dud. and note: he has no homes in china--still a berliner, he's been slumming in sf with his chinese-american wife and has a dreadful addiction to fruity veiled hats, among other things.
it's time to hang it all up, blixa.
classic at age 23
dud by age 30
dead in the water at 40+ heute!
you know it's bad when you start to sell songs about green tea.

nein to en, Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:23 (twenty years ago) link

I was trying to remember whether he'd said he had a second place in China or the US, you're right, it's SF. A bit like Malcolm McLaren boasting he has homes in Paris in NY, when in fact the NY one is the pad his girlfriend's parents bought for her!

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:57 (twenty years ago) link

but that just makes McLaren that much more classic.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Monday, 17 November 2003 00:04 (twenty years ago) link

good comparison--and this is the same case as blixa--this sf lifestyle is the result of the (greencard?) marriage.

nein to en, Monday, 17 November 2003 00:05 (twenty years ago) link

Anyway, I probably shouldn't have brought the personal stuff in, it makes no difference. McLaren and Blixa are both classic in a 'lifetime award' sort of way. Let us salute their twin peaks!

Errrrrrrrrrrr, dud in many ways. His voice (or lack of one) is one of the main reasons I gave up on Neubauten - so weedy and irritating.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:13 (twenty years ago) link

We (meaning my old housemate in NYC) used to have a cat named Blixa. It used to demolish things. Often crap goth records. Therefore, Blixa = classic.

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:23 (twenty years ago) link

Classic for screaming in Stagger Lee. And guitar playing. And looking like he'll kill you.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:14 (twenty years ago) link

sixteen years pass...

So Blixa has been spending his lockdown writing a book, or possibly two books:

1) he's turning his journals / notebooks / diaries into a book

2) he's trying to write a "fictionalised autobiography"*

(i.e. similar to Europa Kreuzweise, in that none of the things in that book actually happened the way they were depicted, but if you read it, you get a very good versimilitude of what Blixa's life is like.)

If you think Blixa is "Classic" then there are more details (and how to get involved if you're interested in joining in the fun) here: https://blixa-bargeld.com/

(If you think Blixa is "Dud" then I'm afraid you're just RONG! and I cannot help you.)

He's great. I've been listening to Alles Wieder Offen again recently and his lyrics are amazing.

Duke, Saturday, 17 October 2020 15:27 (three years ago) link

He is an excellent and charming raconteur and I have absolutely no doubt that his autobiography, fictional or 'real' will be an incredible read. This Prussian has lived 10x more lives than all of us put together.

Small things like the pun in the last line here:

Obwohl selbst farblos, erscheinst du blau wenn in deiner
Oberfläche ruhig sich der Himmel spiegelt, ein Idealparkour
Zum wandeln für den Sohn des Zimmermanns
Das wandelbarste Element.

Obligatory "we had tickets to see Neubauten at the Fonda theatre on Thursday but you know, coronavirus" posts

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 17 October 2020 20:45 (three years ago) link

Trust me, covid has fucked up Blixa’s life more than anyone... their crew lost like €30,000 when the tour was cancelled!

He’s had to leave Berlin because the infection rate in Mitte spiralled out of control. So he’s sitting out the plague in a house in rural Portugal, and he’s decided to write some books to keep him from going mad.

Anyway, enough gossip. I look forward to the books, even if he situation occasioning them is less than idea.

Cats named after Blixa Bargeld do seem to be much more common than one would imagine, I must say.

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 17 October 2020 21:18 (three years ago) link

The rate in Berlin Mitte is far from being out of control. It's about 70 out of 100,000. Very far below parts of France, UK, Czech Republic etc.

Duke, Saturday, 17 October 2020 21:31 (three years ago) link

He may have felt the need to leave, but it's nowhere near out of control here.

Duke, Saturday, 17 October 2020 21:32 (three years ago) link

I apologise. I've googled the figures, and it's now 130 out of 100,000. But it's still lower than many regions in Europe.

Duke, Saturday, 17 October 2020 21:38 (three years ago) link

(I live in Mitte...)
