Well she first came into my view when she was being all dancy and smiley but then when the Bodyguard thing happened it was primetime for utterly racially discombobulated kids in my demographic (I was a japanese nigga in a nearly all white school where emulation of anything other than black media was rare) to get classy with it and Whitney was the picture of grace, which was funny because a lot of those guys whose girlfriends sang that song in karaoke STILL metaphorize anything in their lives worth metaphorizing into, you guessed it, some part of the SCARFACE storyline.

"You know the ripples of a pond? that reminds me of how whitney houston's lips would shake in the video when she hit a hi note, and now Candice's tits would jiggle when I pounded that shit. It's fucked up how it all went to shit, but then everything does, right? Just look at Tony Montana."

'Drug addiction's the only interesting about her though, isn't it?'

To misquote Dr Johnson...

She pretty much singularly represents everything I absolutely loathe.

Is drug addiction still an interesting thing?

I can't say anything for her work more recent than The Bodyguard, but "I want to dance with somebody" is a near-perfect pop song.

Kevin Erickson, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 16:23 (twenty years ago) link

Dude, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" is the song that made me hate her!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 16:34 (twenty years ago) link

You are a wise, wise man, Mr. Perry.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 16:40 (twenty years ago) link

She signed her own fatwa with "The Greatest Love of All".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 16:42 (twenty years ago) link

The opening six, eight seconds of "I Will Always Love You" are great, but the song is definitely a long moonlit walk on a very very short pier.

'i'm your baby tonight' cuts my fucking head off.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 17:54 (twenty years ago) link

I remember my father was in a Whitney/Winwood kinda phase in the late'80s, and I hear that "Dance w/somebody" crap, and it steered me towards Motorhead and Sabbath rather quickly.

update: now my dad listens to Social Distortion and the Pernice Brothers, WTF.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 19:00 (twenty years ago) link

ahhh... I remember listening to " im your baby tonight" in 1990.

I remember being stabbed in a gang fight that year too.

being stabbed was more of a pleasant experience

seriously.......

robert lashley (brotherman), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 21:39 (twenty years ago) link

I nearly sang 'How Will I Know' at karaoke last night. Sadly, I couldn't make my mind up on any songs whatsoever.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 21:41 (twenty years ago) link

I agree with Mr Erickson. although if you count performance art, she's done some wonderful things after the bodyguard.

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 22:21 (twenty years ago) link
