Lauryn Hill has a very convincing derisive laugh.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Sunday, 21 September 2003 06:34 (twenty years ago) link

me and my friends probably made up dances to this song at lunchtime, back in high school.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Sunday, 21 September 2003 06:37 (twenty years ago) link

definitely their best song. remember hearing it first time and being like "holy shit what is this?!" and yeah you get away from it for awhile it's pretty much the same response

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 21 September 2003 06:46 (twenty years ago) link

yo mona lisa... could i get a date on friday. and if you're busy, i wouldn't mind taking saturday-ay-ay ay-ay-ay... okay so nappy heads remix is still my favorite fugees song, but "the score" is still one of my favorite albums ever. no shame in my game. i love it. not as much as "Hey Ya" though, you stank bitch

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 21 September 2003 07:44 (twenty years ago) link

aight its safe now to admit that the fugees were actually pretty nice!!
hahaha Maybe Wyclef will concoct a grand ole StingBono singalong as revenge. Safe? I thought nothing scared ya.

nathalie (nathalie), Sunday, 21 September 2003 07:44 (twenty years ago) link

this song was fucking great when it came out and it still is today

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 21 September 2003 11:10 (twenty years ago) link

i even thought Wyclef was a good MC at that point, hahaha

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 21 September 2003 11:11 (twenty years ago) link

he was a good mc at that point! also The Carnival is much much better than the Lauryn disc (either of them haha)

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 21 September 2003 11:13 (twenty years ago) link

which made The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II a Book all the more disappointing. What a pieceof garbage

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 21 September 2003 15:55 (twenty years ago) link

matos soooooo otm re: carnival vs. lauryn

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 21 September 2003 16:06 (twenty years ago) link

I thought John Forte was pretty cool, I loved that "eatin' mangos in Trinidad with attorneys" line he had....

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 21 September 2003 18:49 (twenty years ago) link

I do so love Fu gee la but Ready or Not has been my favorite track on The Score since I got the album. Lauryn's lines have such an infectious rhythm it that song even if I never did quite get my head around the '...Nina Simone and defecating on your microphone' line.

Claire (Claire Miccio), Sunday, 21 September 2003 19:24 (twenty years ago) link

Fu Gee La is dandy. I've yet to hear a Wyclef full-length (caught some singles) and would love too. Hell, I'm even curious about his version of "What's New Pussycat?" I'd also like to hear that Bono/Jean collabo for NetAid again, but I wouldn't be surprised if they destroyed all copies.

Can we talk more about how horrible that Unplugged album was? I feel like there should be an eternal flame that makes sure we Never Forget.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 21 September 2003 22:17 (twenty years ago) link

"Ready or Not" (the version with Sly and Robbie) is better than "Fu-Gee-La" and not only is The Carnival great and overlooked, but even The Ecleftic has some incredible moments. Wyclef can be a bit clunky, but when his "Haiti" overshadows his "PJs", he can soar (see "Yélé" on Carnival f'rinstance). He always seems like an artist torn between (a few) different worlds, and he doesn't do a bad job reconciling them (tho' that tension informs his best stuff accordingly, and often positively).

And -- huh? -- what the fuck is "unsafe" about "admitting" the Fugees were "pretty nice"? Only someone who worried about what others thought of his/her taste could possibly ask that question. I liked the Fugees back in '96 or whenever, and they still sound > "nice" to me. WTF?

David A. (Davant), Monday, 22 September 2003 03:49 (twenty years ago) link

nah i like them i was just kidding bcz im not usually into their specific brand of earnest over-praised pop rap, also i everyone (even 50!!) is a lil scared to say a kind word abt lauryn since the unplugged incident

trife (simon_tr), Monday, 22 September 2003 04:05 (twenty years ago) link

Well, yeah, okay, the Unplugged thing was lame. But her first solo (Miseducation, 'course), if over-praised by the (mainstream?) critics, was solid. It was silly at the time how everyone leaped onto the Lauryn bandwagon and slammed 'Clef, as if we couldn't like both.

Sure, they could be earnest, but they could be funny too, which is a hard thing to pull off without inviting novelty act perceptions. The Fugees and solo Wyclef manage to do this, I think (sometimes).

Where would the Fugees be today if they'd stayed together/made more records? And, a tangential question, given all my opinionated crap above -- are they the hip-hop Pixies? Ha ha.

David A. (Davant), Monday, 22 September 2003 04:58 (twenty years ago) link

david ALL rap is funny! and the fugees were LESS funny than most I think.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 22 September 2003 05:01 (twenty years ago) link

"doo wop (that thing)" was sorta funny though i guess, in er, in a "sisters are doing it for themselves" sort of way.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 22 September 2003 05:02 (twenty years ago) link

also "ready or not" was totally jacked from somebody else (i.e. the delfonics).

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 22 September 2003 05:03 (twenty years ago) link

ready or not is why i added that clause!!

trife (simon_tr), Monday, 22 September 2003 05:05 (twenty years ago) link

Sterling, you're right up to a point, probably, but now I got another tangential question -- which is the funniest music genre? Hip-hop? Punk? Prog?

Wait... is all rap funny, anyway? I don't think so, I don't think you can be that general. Altho' it's an interesting thought that some (much?) of the humour has perhaps been missed by (white?) mainstream critics too busy seeing only threat.

David A. (Davant), Monday, 22 September 2003 05:32 (twenty years ago) link

'snoop doggy dogg's 'doggystyle' is a grim, sobering portrait depicting the solemn horrors of gangsta life...'

trife (simon_tr), Monday, 22 September 2003 05:48 (twenty years ago) link

I love how her concert has become an "incident"! also I really really like The Ecleftic

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 22 September 2003 05:53 (twenty years ago) link

What was the Unplugged incident?

... (gareth), Monday, 22 September 2003 06:04 (twenty years ago) link

I think it just refers to the show itself, which was a pretty huge disaster

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 22 September 2003 06:10 (twenty years ago) link

clef needs to shave the head. dreads on a baldie isn't too hot.

JasonD (JasonD), Monday, 22 September 2003 06:14 (twenty years ago) link

The Carnival was my soundtrack of summer '97 and 'Fu-Gee-La' is one of my all time most-loved hip hop tracks. 'How Many Mics?' is woefully underappreciated, though the Score wasn't so hot overall. Also, Clef's sense of humour made those Virgin ads rock.

columns, Monday, 22 September 2003 11:17 (twenty years ago) link

I think I'm the only human who likes the Lauryn Hill Unplugged album. I don't just like it, I actually love it! OH NO!!!

(And I honestly don't understand what about it is so bad as to be considered an "incident".)

"Fu Gee La" is definitely bad-ass and smooth, and The Score was a great album in so many ways. Clef's mic-rocking abilities maintained pretty well for The Carnival, but it seems like they fell short after that (although he still writes some good songs, don't get me wrong..."Thug Angels" is THE SHIT).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 22 September 2003 17:14 (twenty years ago) link

Pras should get more love

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 September 2003 17:43 (twenty years ago) link

haha watching the black eyed peas on TOTP at the weekend i was thinking "of course! fugees for '03, no wonder they get so much stick on ILM!" (i love 'em both of course)

best song they didnt jack from somebody else?
huh? does no one know Teena Marie's "Ooh La La La"?

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 22 September 2003 17:47 (twenty years ago) link

Pras was a hella good MC for awhile with one of my favorite deep-voiced laid-back styles, what's he been doing the past few years?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 22 September 2003 17:53 (twenty years ago) link

Was just gonna say that about "Oh La La." Every melody on that album is stolen from SOMEWHERE. That's the beauty of it.

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 22 September 2003 17:56 (twenty years ago) link

going off of memory the best track on The Score is "Zealots".

i'm amazed again at how some of the smartest people here still haven't figured out that uncool and/or awkward music can still be really good

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:01 (twenty years ago) link

"Oh La La La," whatever.

If I'm honest with myself, The Carnival is one of my 10 favorite rap albums of the '90s (which is a bigger deal than it sounds, given how massive the pool of competition is).
