The Sadies

The Sadies never disappoint . . . even with Jon Langford unapologetically riding their coattails every time they pass through Chicago.

Great show at the Abbey the other night. Super-psychedelic. The soundman had the vibes mixed just right, which is always the wild card in a Sadies set. "Wasn't Born to Follow" gets played every time and it keeps sounding better and better.

Just a great band.

The vibes were nearly inaudible, sadly.

The vibes are never prominent. They're subtly mixed in there by good soundmen. But it's frustrating - once you're heard them mixed correctly - to see Paul (the vibesmith) working hard back there and yet hear none of it. When you hear it, it's sublime.

does anybody know where the Neko Case & The Sadies song "Make Your Bed" come from? i have it on MP3 and wonder if there is more of this genius.

Got talking to their roadie afterwards (he and my girlfriend were both wearing Damned shirts, in the middle of a festival of Americana!) and he introduced us to Dallas and Travis - all really nice guys and huge fans of The Damned (which of course only endeared them to me even further!).

One of the brothers (I forget which one's which, but the one with the short, slicked-back hair?) apparently also plays in a Damned tribute band. I suggested that the other one should start a Vibrators tribute band 'cos he looks like a taller skinier version of Knox, and they seemed to like that idea!

I already had Stories Often Told and bought Pure Diamond Gold off them that night (both excellent) and have subsequently managed to track down copies of Precious Moments and Tremendous Efforts (although I haven't had a chance to absorb them properly yet).

Didn't know they had a new one coming out, but now that I do I'm looking forward to hearing it immensely.

I probably would mention it if I knew anything about it - but I don't; and nothing's leaping out of the screen at AMG either!

While Tigers is a live album, it is not your typical career retrospective — only two of the eleven songs are from Neko's back catalog. In addition to two new original compositions Neko wraps her powerful pipes around a surprising collection of covers written by artists like Buffy Saint Marie, Loretta Lynn, the Shangri-La’s and Freakwater’s Catherine Irwin. The set closes with impassioned versions of the standards, "Wayfaring Stranger" and "This Little Light", which Neko makes forever her own.

Neko Case has been making a name for herself over the past few years in both indie-rock and country circles as a solo artist and as a member of the New Pornographers. Her majestic-yet-sublime singing voice, her poetic songwriting and her musical vision– which reconstructs a century’s worth of American music has won her acclaim from all quarters.

Writing of her previous solo work, Spin Magazine’s Alex Pappademas said “...she treats Americana like a wellspring of weirdness, not a retro refuge...” and in Rolling Stone, Neva Chonin called her sound “…country so cool it shivers.”

In addition to The Tigers Have Spoken, Neko is completing a deal with Anti- for her next studio album, the follow-up to the highly acclaimed Blacklisted, due out in the Spring of 2005. Neko will also perform at the 2004 Austin City Limits Festival in Austin, TX on Friday, September 17th with bassist Tom V. Ray and multi-instrumentalist Jon Rauhouse.

when i saw them in L.A., they asked the audience if they had any requests and this guy asked for a gun club tune, which they immediately tore through.

One of the great bands working today . . . Surely, by now, some of the Canadian heads have to have gleaned some information about the live records . . .

They were such juggernauts on stage, these guys.

Tons of tributes pouring in, from Canadian peers (Ron Sexsmith, Randy Bachman, folks from Arcade Fire, Sloan, et al.) to others in his orbit (Jon Langford, Steve Albini).

so sad. a legend. one of the great live acts of the era, and one of the last i saw pre-pandemic. deeply thankful i got to see them as often as i did.

oh no. I hadn't really explored them before, but had recently checked out the CD Darker Circles and boy what a knockout. kinda alt country but had a lot of Notorious Byrd Brothers, Blasters, etc

John Doe & The Sadies
John Doe (still with the reunited X) and The Sadies (colleagues of Neko Case) take a well-timed ride on Country Club ‘s honky tonk marriage-go-round of old school classics. These testimonies are more affecting for passing by a little faster (and funnier, as the Sadies punctuate git-through-it wit). The Sadies also carefully steer Doe across neon shadows, to truly see: “This ain’t no life. But it’s my life!” Another soul saved by (or for) the jukebox!

Hmm, dunno, but I did just buy tickets to see them with Jon Langford and Sally Timms this summer.

They were great last night as a trio, first backing Langford and Simms, then on their own. I've long taken them for granted, but man, nothing better than garage-tinged country-rock saturated with spaghetti western and surf guitar twang.
