Cuff the Duke was real good too. Alarmingly young.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:26 (twenty years ago) link

To make a real bad A meets B comparison, Cuff the Duke is like Radiohead meets Hank Snow.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:26 (twenty years ago) link

The Sadies never disappoint . . . even with Jon Langford unapologetically riding their coattails every time they pass through Chicago.

Great show at the Abbey the other night. Super-psychedelic. The soundman had the vibes mixed just right, which is always the wild card in a Sadies set. "Wasn't Born to Follow" gets played every time and it keeps sounding better and better.

Just a great band.

gusbot (eternal_fields), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:59 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, Travis needs to sing more. I like Dallas's baritone, but Travis can really sing.

The vibes were nearly inaudible, sadly.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:01 (twenty years ago) link

You can tell those boys have been steeped in it. They're pros and they cater to heads in the crowd.

The vibes are never prominent. They're subtly mixed in there by good soundmen. But it's frustrating - once you're heard them mixed correctly - to see Paul (the vibesmith) working hard back there and yet hear none of it. When you hear it, it's sublime.

gusbot (eternal_fields), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:07 (twenty years ago) link

Ummm, I like "Flash".

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:38 (twenty years ago) link

I saw them in a big soft seat auditorium last fall, when they were opening for Blue Rodeo. The vibes were perfect, just pushed everything into that higher stratosphere of mysticism.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:43 (twenty years ago) link

Thaat's exactly what they do, isn't it? You nailed it, Mr. Mann. If I'm not mistaken I've seen Paul Aucoin play them with a bow more than once. They should make him a member of the band.

gusbot (eternal_fields), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:56 (twenty years ago) link

I interviewed Dallas for an advancer on the show. He was surprisingly well-spoken. I sorta expected him to be a mumbler of few words. But it sounds like Paul is more or less a probationary-Sadie.
Dallas, jokingly I hope said of him (when I talked about how great what he added was):
"Yeah, we fine him every time he screws up. We've been playing so much, he can't afford to suck."

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:02 (twenty years ago) link

dang, where were they playing last night? I haven't missed a Sadies show in a while.

pauls00, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:24 (twenty years ago) link

not in toronto. don't worry. they are touring western canada.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:25 (twenty years ago) link

oh man they are fantastic live. never loved the records quite as much, but you can't have everything. i've seen them under their own name twice, and once saw Dallas & Travis playing with their parents' band doing fairly faithful old-school bluegrass stuff, and they really tore it up then as well.

does anybody know where the Neko Case & The Sadies song "Make Your Bed" come from? i have it on MP3 and wonder if there is more of this genius.

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:45 (twenty years ago) link

that version is a seven inch, probably one some Bloodshot CD comp or another, but there's also a starker version on Neko's Canadian Amp EP, which is variably available.

I got Favourite Colours yesterday. So far, it's good. I'm seeing them this weekend.

Huck, Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Saw them at Spydafest a few weeks back and they were absolutely fantastic; particularly when they started the encore with a (frankly extraordinary) rendition of Pink Floyd's "Matilda Mother"!

Got talking to their roadie afterwards (he and my girlfriend were both wearing Damned shirts, in the middle of a festival of Americana!) and he introduced us to Dallas and Travis - all really nice guys and huge fans of The Damned (which of course only endeared them to me even further!).

One of the brothers (I forget which one's which, but the one with the short, slicked-back hair?) apparently also plays in a Damned tribute band. I suggested that the other one should start a Vibrators tribute band 'cos he looks like a taller skinier version of Knox, and they seemed to like that idea!

I already had Stories Often Told and bought Pure Diamond Gold off them that night (both excellent) and have subsequently managed to track down copies of Precious Moments and Tremendous Efforts (although I haven't had a chance to absorb them properly yet).

Didn't know they had a new one coming out, but now that I do I'm looking forward to hearing it immensely.

not to mention their live album backing up Neko Case!

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 13 August 2004 07:45 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't mention their their live album backing up Neko Case!

I probably would mention it if I knew anything about it - but I don't; and nothing's leaping out of the screen at AMG either!

So please, mention it to your heart's content!

Neko Case signs with ANTI-; Full Band Live Album to be Released This Fall

ANTI- will release Neko Case's new live album, The Tigers Have Spoken on November 9 in a licensing deal with Mint Records for the world outside of Canada. Recorded over 7 nights and at 3 different venues in Chicago and Toronto, the album finds Neko backed by a full band featuring the Sadies and steel guitar whiz Jon Rauhouse and special guests Kelly Hogan, Carolyn Mark, Jim & Jennie and the Pinetops, Paul Morstad and Brian Connelly.

While Tigers is a live album, it is not your typical career retrospective — only two of the eleven songs are from Neko's back catalog. In addition to two new original compositions Neko wraps her powerful pipes around a surprising collection of covers written by artists like Buffy Saint Marie, Loretta Lynn, the Shangri-La’s and Freakwater’s Catherine Irwin. The set closes with impassioned versions of the standards, "Wayfaring Stranger" and "This Little Light", which Neko makes forever her own.

Neko Case has been making a name for herself over the past few years in both indie-rock and country circles as a solo artist and as a member of the New Pornographers. Her majestic-yet-sublime singing voice, her poetic songwriting and her musical vision– which reconstructs a century’s worth of American music has won her acclaim from all quarters.

Writing of her previous solo work, Spin Magazine’s Alex Pappademas said “...she treats Americana like a wellspring of weirdness, not a retro refuge...” and in Rolling Stone, Neva Chonin called her sound “…country so cool it shivers.”

In addition to The Tigers Have Spoken, Neko is completing a deal with Anti- for her next studio album, the follow-up to the highly acclaimed Blacklisted, due out in the Spring of 2005. Neko will also perform at the 2004 Austin City Limits Festival in Austin, TX on Friday, September 17th with bassist Tom V. Ray and multi-instrumentalist Jon Rauhouse.

Aaaaaah, so it's not out yet then? OK - something else to look forward to (besides the new Sadies album, I mean) obviously!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 13 August 2004 08:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Stewart, did they have Paul Aucoin with them? The vibes player? I noticed he only plays on one song on the new, fantastic (much more psyche/byrdsy than spaghetti) album. But I'm hoping he still tours with them, as he really makes it extra-dimensional. TOMORROW NIGHT!

Huck, Friday, 13 August 2004 13:42 (nineteen years ago) link

No vibes player when I saw them I'm afraid - but maybe it was too expensive to bring him and al his gear to the UK? They did have an upright double bass that looked as if it had had an extremely full and eventful life 'though!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:50 (nineteen years ago) link

You missed out.
I've seen them twice, and very eager for the third TOMORROW NIGHT!
THe first time, they were opening for Blue Rodeo and whizzed about 10 songs in just under 20 minutes. They were all in their black suits and Dallas intro'd each song with "Thankyouverymuch, right now the Sadies would like to play..."

Huck, Friday, 13 August 2004 13:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Fear not, for I can assure you that we* WILL be seeing them again before too long!

(* - my girlfiend's just as eager to see 'em again as I am, which always helps!)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:55 (nineteen years ago) link

haha I love Dallas' intros.

just sobering up from seeing the Sadies last night. Apparently it was being recorded for a live album, by one steve albini. There were video cameras there, too, so perhaps a DVD? Anyway, special guests galore (Neko Case, Kelly Hogan, Jon Langford, Jon Spencer, Gary Louris, Deadly Snakes, the Good Brothers, Garth Hudson, Blue Rodeo, and so on). It was a bit "Last Waltz", but much more drunk, and it went on until about 2am. I dunno what the record will sound like, but it was a hell of a lot of fun. Lots of songs I'd never heard them play before. Mind you, I get the impression they've got a hell of a setlist.

pauls00, Sunday, 5 February 2006 21:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Wow, I'm jealous. I saw them with Heavy Trash (Jon Spencer's rockabilly thing) a few months ago. I've heard they've been doing some scoring for, um, someone. The story went something like they'd been commissioned to write like 10 songs or something for a movie project (I think it may have even been for a documentary?) and they handed in closer to 40, because, well, that's just the way the Sadies roll.
Was Paul Aucoin (vibes) there? He was with them during my favourite Sadies shows (circa, um, 2002?) and really, really sent them into that Otherworldy Dimension that was so wonderful to experience.

He was a beatnik. I was a martian. (Huk-L), Monday, 6 February 2006 14:31 (eighteen years ago) link

yuengling participle (rotten03), Monday, 6 February 2006 21:23 (eighteen years ago) link

there's a song on the bloodshot making singles, drinking doubles compilation called 'little sadie', a sort of revved-up version of 'cocaine blues' that apparently they did in one take and came up with on the spot.

when i saw them in L.A., they asked the audience if they had any requests and this guy asked for a gun club tune, which they immediately tore through.

no vibes last night, unfortunately. The stage was plenty crowded, as it was, though....someone took some pictures here:

Thanks, hadn't heard of that one! (And yet I still get bombarded by this label re bands I don't care about: what the hell, Yeproc?)
Wrote this album review-as-show-preview when they were coming to Columbus OH in '09:

John Doe & The Sadies
John Doe (still with the reunited X) and The Sadies (colleagues of Neko Case) take a well-timed ride on Country Club ‘s honky tonk marriage-go-round of old school classics. These testimonies are more affecting for passing by a little faster (and funnier, as the Sadies punctuate git-through-it wit). The Sadies also carefully steer Doe across neon shadows, to truly see: “This ain’t no life. But it’s my life!” Another soul saved by (or for) the jukebox!

That show turned out to be wilder than the album---the whole set may no longer be on the 'Tube as one playlist, but here's a bit of it (also catch others from that tour):

They were great last night as a trio, first backing Langford and Simms, then on their own. I've long taken them for granted, but man, nothing better than garage-tinged country-rock saturated with spaghetti western and surf guitar twang.
