I don't change the station if he comes on the radio (unless it's "Piano Man"), so mildly classic.

I truly loathe this man.

I think you speak for all of us.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 22:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

To me he's always been a good example of why the whole singer-songwriter movement threw a number of people off course. He wouldn't make a bad songwriter-for-hire, but he's a very heavy-handed singer and producer ("Piano Man" is about accurate as he reminds me of someone performing at a Rush Street piano bar). "Uptown Girl" and "The Longest Time" are pretty good tho as they force him away from his usual vocal schtick.

You do know he played piano on "Remember (Walkin' in the Sand)" now don't you?

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 22:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

I like the album An Innocent Man. He's still the Beatles-wanna-be misanthrope he's always been, but the dream of boinking a supermodel inspires him to be more joyful. "Uptown Girl" is wonderful. A joyful Frankie Valli rip that simmers with disdain ("she's got her toys!"). "Tell Her About It" is another victory march and "The Longest Time" is about as tender as he could get. A few other singles are decent (and "We Didn't Start The Fire" is one of the more interesting Don't Blame The Boomers songs), but overall he's pretty annoying. PRESSURE!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 22:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 22:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's catchy and most people miss the message of the song (the U.S. was fucked up before the hippies sold out) thanks to the history-rap. Plus it has the couplet "Rock and roller cola wars AND I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 22:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

My aunt and uncle have a copy of Billy Joel's Greatest Hits Vols. 1 and 2 and so do all of their friends, it's uncannily omnipresent in an ahem certain milieu. Also the theater advisor would play the whole thing on Saturdays while we were building sets. When you're forced to listen to something that much eventually you have to develop a relationship with it a little more complicated that pure antipathy.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 22:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Theater advisor in my high school, sorry.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 22:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

His uptempo songs are generally classic-ish, but his ballads
are genuinely icky.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 22:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

Did anyone see that MTV special about the poor junior high school student whose dad used to play drums with Billy Joel and whose speech was peppered with phrases taken from Billy Joel songs?

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 22:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

"We Didn't Start the Fire" = self-righteous cop-out + sad ripoff of "It's the End of the World And We Know It"'s lyric and vocal delivery.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 22:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'd also like to note that Billy Joel claimed to be a Suede fan in a Rolling Stone article.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 22:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 22:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

that's up to you, isn't it? I just think it's interesting. He also claims to hate most of the songs he's done. Which doesn't surprise me, as he seems to loathe everything.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 22:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

William R Henderson (Cabin Essence), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 23:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dud of all duds. "Competent"? Sure but also mind-bogglingly awful. More than an American Costello, he strikes me as an American Gilbert O'Sullivan or Leepy Lee -- one with the bonus disorder of thinking he's the American McCartney. The only "rock" star I might loathe more is Frank Zappa and for similar reasons: Both combine a complete absence of talent with enough self-righteous smugness to fuel the next space shuttle.

Burr (Burr), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 23:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

One of my friends said he knew someone they ended up getting a ride with Billy Joel once, and while in the car, Joel would not play anything except his music. Don't know if it's true, but I'd love to believe it was...

Joe (Joe), Thursday, 17 April 2003 00:15 (twenty years ago) link

that sounds like a Prince anecdote, and like all Prince anecdotes, they sound even funnier when assigned to Billy Joel.

"Do you know who Billy Joel is?" Yes. "Good."

Attila, people.

hstencil, Thursday, 17 April 2003 00:42 (twenty years ago) link

Yes, I've heard that about Prince as well. With Joel (at least the way my friend was telling it), it was more an incessant, unsolicited "And here's something new I've been working on..."

Raggett in kneejerk dismissal shockah.

makes more sense when you add that it's new stuff. Looking for feedback makes more sense than wanting everyone to bask in the glory of "Big Shot" one more time.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 17 April 2003 00:57 (twenty years ago) link

Did you hear that Billy Joel's mom isn't really white?

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 April 2003 01:03 (twenty years ago) link

I prefer his slower songs to his uptempo ones, actually. "Uptown Girl" is a stone classic, but "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me" is truly, truly awful. I like a whole lot of his 70's stuff when he sounded like an American Elton John. I adore The Stranger, "Just the Way You Are" included.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Thursday, 17 April 2003 01:15 (twenty years ago) link

for some reason on "Uptown Girl" when Joel says "now she's looking for a backstreet guy" I keep expecting him to follow it with "and so am I!"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 17 April 2003 01:58 (twenty years ago) link

He deserves kudos for diversity
C'mon - Uptown Girl vs. Pressure vs. You May Be Right?
Also, can someone identify the BJ song about two high
school lovers who get a divorce? Nice uptempo song
with multiple boogie-woogie sections, always reminded
me of Ben Folds Five (who are totally classic).

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 17 April 2003 06:03 (twenty years ago) link

I can't believe this is happening on ILXm

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Thursday, 17 April 2003 06:03 (twenty years ago) link

Well, Whitney, the reason it's happening is this:

When you're forced to listen to something that much eventually you have to develop a relationship with it a little more complicated that pure antipathy.

Truly OTM. Ned may have built nothing but hostility toward the man over the years, but most of us have had to also admit his good points at one time or another. And that creates confusion. He sucks. mostly, but not in some opressive, ubiquitous, meat-headed Phil Collins way. I'll admit, much of The Stranger still charms me, especially "Vienna" and "Movin' Out." They're little New Jersey symphonies, for all that's worth, which is admittedly not much. But at leat Billy Joel doesn't distance himself from his material -- he always honestly comes off as exactly the schlub that he is. And that's kind of admirable, though again, not much.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 17 April 2003 06:14 (twenty years ago) link

"Summer, Highland Falls" is fuckin awesome

TB, Thursday, 17 April 2003 06:15 (twenty years ago) link

The version on "Songs in the Attic" especially. That's my favorite Billy Joel album, actually. Even the bad songs ("Los Angelenos," anyone?) re perfectly framed in their most appropriate setting -- small club when necessary, big stadium when necessary. And "Everybody Loves You Now" draws real blood.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 17 April 2003 06:20 (twenty years ago) link

can someone identify the BJ song about two high
school lovers who get a divorce?

I think that's "Scenes from An Italian Restaurant" from The Stranger. But that's not why I'm responding to this. I think all Billy Joel songs should from here on be referred to as BJ songs. That's hilarious.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 17 April 2003 06:25 (twenty years ago) link

I think his whole line was that he was competent at writing, at singing, at arranging, etc., that he knew how to do all the necessary things that go into pop stardom.

I'm coming in late to this thread, and rading it in pieces, so forgive if my responses are out of order of importance.

Did he really say that? When? Because that's perfect. If he can sum himself up in such an astute way, my respect for him has just jumped three notches.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 17 April 2003 06:28 (twenty years ago) link

"Did he really say that? When?"

He said it on Tuesday night's episode of American Idol, for which he provided the "music" (ie, they all just sang his songs). I thought it was a pretty honest self-assessment, actually. I still don't like him tho.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:18 (twenty years ago) link

not in some opressive, ubiquitous, meat-headed Phil Collins way

I wouldn't be so sure about that. And as for that quote, it says nothing. I don't care if he's competent, for fuck's sake, I care if he (or anybody) does something that interests me, and he interests me only in the sense that I wouldn't mind browbeating him for all his albums-worth o' crap.

hstencil, Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:44 (twenty years ago) link

King of the Duds. I dare you to listen to "Pressure" 5 times in a row. You will become a murderer.

And "Uptown Girl" has this Nazi-step march ham-fisted oppression that top none other. I had his greatest hits I & II when I was in 7th grade, but just because I learned to play "She's got a way" for this girl I had a crush on. He is a miserable sod, on top of everything. He must hate life. He has his few, few moments, but on the whole, the most abhorrent artist I can bring to mind. Sorry.

Costello is the English Joel. I've just never gotten anywhere near this devotion people have for that lonesome, lonesome man.

Joel's addiction to WINE is also a bit sad. I mean, Christie won't even let him near the kids.

And that song "River Of Dreams"?

Costello is the English Joel.
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Costello is the British David Byrne...on massive, near-toxic doses of methamphetamines. There is no similarity between Costello and Joel, except the fact that they have white skin and sing in English. Thats it.

that's a lot of material! When col and I have moderated them, the sheer drudgery of everyday posting required time limits. At least the Eagles catalog is small.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 15 July 2017 13:49 (six years ago) link

I was thinking chronological, but not including Hassles/Attila just cause that'd bog it down right at the start? (Maybe double back to those as special features though?). Basically, Cold Spring Harbor to River of Dreams.... open to other approaches though!

Agreed that it's a more unwieldy catalog than the Eagles. OTOH the most familiar stuff is smack in the middle of the chronology - would be weird not to get to Allentown and Don't Ask Me Why etc., but also unsatisfying not to delve into the lesser-heard records...

I think there's a lot of ppl like me who know tons of Billy stuff but never really owned a lot of albums because he was always everywhere on the radio and MTV

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 15 July 2017 14:13 (six years ago) link

So, I've been compiling a spreadsheet and I count 149 unique songs that could conceivably be included - - - though that's including later live covers of things, duets with Tony Bennett and Rosie O'Donnell, Elvis covers on the Honeymoon in Vegas soundtrack, etc., much of which could be eliminated, or consolidated by covering several related songs on a single day. If we really do stick to the 1971-1993 'core' discography it's more like 125 entries. How long was the Eagles list, roughly?

﴿→ ☺ (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 15 July 2017 16:01 (six years ago) link

How would you handle Songs In the Attic?

pplains, Saturday, 15 July 2017 16:02 (six years ago) link

I was pondering that but I think it'd be either a matter of just noting, when we hit those songs, that they later showed up on that album in 1980-era live recordings, or, when we hit 1981 it's like a little, OK, break time, this three-day weekend's listening is Songs in the Attic, share your thoughts and feelings. I mean, later live albums, who cares, but I feel like that one's kind of part of the 'canon' for Joel fans.

﴿→ ☺ (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 15 July 2017 16:05 (six years ago) link

I feel like list the main studio albums

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 15 July 2017 17:45 (six years ago) link

tbh, since he has almost zero non-album b-sides etc., there are virtually no 'iffy' cases until after The Bridge so i can kinda read the room at that point and see how we're doing. i mean we have to have "the night is still young" and "you're only human," and i mean leaving off "why should i worry?" just seems mean.

﴿→ ☺ (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 15 July 2017 18:18 (six years ago) link

How long was the Eagles list, roughly?

TOO LONG!

But seriously, probably around 100 songs (counting reunion stuff).

to fly across the city and find Aerosmith's car (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 15 July 2017 18:30 (six years ago) link

I say, lets do the Cold Spring Harbour through River of Dreams discography, excluding live stuff (does Songs from the Attic have any non-album material?) but including the rare odds and ends like the GH bonus tracks, and perhaps "Why Should I Worry." Billy certainly has a more manageable discography than Elton, and didn't you guys do that (I didn't follow it)?

Also, I think doing the listening thread prior to the tracks poll makes sense as a way for those of us who only really know the hits to get deeper into his catalogue, even if it means suspending the tracks poll if its turn comes up in the queue. I think it'll make voting more interesting.

some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Saturday, 15 July 2017 18:54 (six years ago) link
