it's true. they are going to take over the planet. soon we will all be wearing fluorescent macramé bodysuits.

i saw them play a while back and there were some tall dudes dressed in black cloaks with fake white beards whose function was, it seemed, just to push people around.

marcg (marcg), Friday, 11 April 2003 18:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think one of the nameless one-off noise/dance "bands" that appear in Providence randomly with costumed peoples are way punker.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 11 April 2003 18:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

What's a "fucking band"?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 11 April 2003 18:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

In this particular particular instance curtis I believe he's using the present participle of the verb to fuck as an intensive to emphasize exactly how goddamn punk Forcefield is. Also, I think we had a Forcefield thread last week.

Adam OTM, grammar wise. A thousand pardons for not clarifying.

Forcefield are pretty fucking punk, but I wouldn't say they're the world's punkest band right now. I've also heard, to my dismay, that they're no longer going to do live shows--just video displays; I don't know how true that is, though.

As far as recorded material goes, I don't listen to either Roggaboggas or Lord Of The Rings Modulator very much. That doesn't mean they're not good; I honestly don't listen to that much pure noise in my leisure time. I'm more of an organic noise kinda guy--I like instruments making noise more than machines. Some of the stuff on LOTRM did make me want to shake my non-existant booty, though.

Brinkman is on tour now with Mindflayer. MAKE SURE YOU GO SEE THEM. They departed last night, and are coming back in a few weeks.

I think Freakzone are punker, and they contain members of Forcefield (and just about every other band related to The Fort, for that matter.) When last they played they broke a toilet, dumped garbaged all over the floor, knocked people over, threw chairs and tables, shot tin cans from a massive canon and got yelled at by a snobby art bitch who works at AS220. The first time they played (if it was the first and if it was the same band; this 'first time' was an un-identified band with the same members less some) they shot off fireworks inside, used spraypaint in a non-ventilated area and lit stuff on fire. All while dressed as a bunny and a crazy scientist with a big block head. That was pretty punk.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

freakzone sound awesome. looks like they have an ep out on thunder recs, although they sound best live.

tried to go see some f.f. videos last weekend here (nyc) at the kreps gallery. maybe it was too late, but it was empty when i got there. mindflayer are playing in long island city this weekend. will for sure check that out. a few months ago i picked up the "f.f. video collection" on vhs at kreps when pleasurehorse played and they showed f.f. videos. they had another vhs tape there that i did not pick up and have cursed myself for not doing so. ben mcoskar was really nice and answered a lot of questions for me there.

i would have to agree with ian, in that i don't listen to f.f. all that often. but, when i'm in the mood they hit the spot. their overall aesthetic (visual and musical) is so cool.

I'm kinda neither here nor there on the whole Fort Thunder crew - but I really really love this Forcefield record. What of Mindflayer? M Brinkman does solo work? What is Transmittens? Direct me to a website please!! I'm apparently out of the (Bulb? Load?) loop. fill me in

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mindflayer - Matt Brinkman and Brian Chippendale (of Lightning Bolt) destroying your mind with drums and oscillators; new LP/CD out on Bulb and limited availability CD out on Oo Mau Mau.

Matt Brinkman's solo work is limited to the Transmittens CD on Vermiform, a split LP with Pleasurehorse and some casettees (I think.) Maybe also some CD-R releases as Meerk Puffy; a split CD-R with Nautical Almanac definitely.

I can't really direct you to a website, unfortunately.. bulbrecords.com and loadrecords.com might have some information. I think there was a page on bostonnoise.com with a Brinkman discography on it, but I think it's old and out-dated.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 11 April 2003 20:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, and mindflayer.com.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 11 April 2003 20:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thanks dude! I didn't know Brinkman / Meerk Puffy = one and the same. I have that insane split with Nautical that works as both record and cd.

Will check out Transmittens for sure...

thanks again for the info!

also check out thunder records:

http://thunderrecords.animaldisguise.com/catalog.html

the freakzone ep is listed there. i have a bunch of the real slow radio volumes and they are really great. cool mix cds stuff from (i guess) mostly providence pepople.

marcg (marcg), Friday, 11 April 2003 20:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Nautical split works as both record and CD? explain!!!

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 11 April 2003 20:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah dude it's awesome - it's a cdr that they cut grooves into, so it doubles as a record. I've tried it - the CD sounds way better (obviously) but for novelty's sake the spinning CD is hella cool

in related news - anyone heard Noxagt?? I loved Kjetil's solo stuff, though I assume this is way different. What does he play in the band? Is the CD worth getting?

you forgot drum machines, asshole.

Meerk Puffy's LP on Animal Disguise is absolutely amazing. Psychdelic oscillator and thump thump weird stuff. Locked grooves for additional stoned confusion.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 26 February 2004 03:21 (twenty years ago) link

hey ian -- Meerk Puffy is like two people right? Brinkman and . . . ?

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 26 February 2004 03:44 (twenty years ago) link

meerk puffy = just brinkman.

forcefield used to just be two people, brinkman and p.lobe--they were, i think, the only ones on the early CDRs. they're definitely the only ones on lord of the ring modulator.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 26 February 2004 03:47 (twenty years ago) link

just got the Meerk Puffy lp a few weeks a go and it is pretty dandy in its fried swirl and palpitation.

Chiara played in Meerk Puffy for a minute.

Russ, Thursday, 26 February 2004 17:44 (twenty years ago) link

anyone heard Noxagt??
Yeah they're very loud and aggressive, raw, experimental, low end repetitive pounding. Bass drums and viola, no lyrics, better production and a bit more accessible than Lightning Bolt and a good fit for Load. I think they're from Norway.

what does Forcefield actually sound like? I tinker with CoolEdit just like the next guy but I don't how to decipher Jon's diagram.

Thank you sirs for those links.
The sound itself isn't punk at all because it doesn't pound or break shit, but their approach from what little I read seems extremly punk.

Ian's post now has me researching freakzone.

Also, have you guys heard the KRAP LP on WABANA records:

A live document of a spur-of-the-moment collaboration between NEIL BURKE (MEN'S RECOVERY PROJECT), MR. BRINKMAN (FORCEFIELD and MINDFLAYER), and FAST FORWARD, captured July 7th, 2002 at the Common Ground--Battleboro, Vermont's 30-year-old hippie collective restaurant and bar. Upon arrival at the club the artists discovered no promotion had been done and the house P.A. was locked up in the manager's office--who naturally had left for the night. Subsequently, the performers broke into the office, freed the P.A., and joined forces in a punishing assault of pure noise freakout--delivered with an arsenal of analog sound devices, over-effected guitar, and vocal body slams--performed to a horrified audience of a handful of hippie transients. When life hands you lemons, hippies get hurt.

Pretty fun listen.

jon, i can get you copies of any of the RSR volumes from chris, or i can give you matt's e-mail address. also, i have a copy of assassins, one of the early forcefield CDRs that i got from nate.

i don't think mindflayer are touring anytime soon! if they are, i haven't heard about it.

since i posted about cdrs with rekkid grooves, i got the nautical 'we want war' tour cdr which is like that. it's crazzzzy.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 26 February 2004 21:53 (twenty years ago) link

Yeaaa, that's the CDR. When I get my computer back, can you send me that stuff?

Sir Hiss! a.k.a. Jon Williams in brrrrrrrrrrrRochester! (ex machina), Thursday, 26 February 2004 22:17 (twenty years ago) link

yes. or if you come down here before that happens, i can burn you stacks and stacks of CDs.

are you EVER going to get your computer back?

re: KRAP- i am ripping this now for Nate. It's a pretty good record, but in general I'd rather listen to Brinkman's solo stuff, as I'm not a big fan of Neil Burke (as either Sinking Body or Man's Recovery Project) or Fast Forward. I think this was recorded during that short tour the three of them did around the time of Tin Can Full of Dreams--they all three played in Providence after the fest one day, and I think left on tour? dave correct me if i'm wrong, pls.

I just picked this up for $3. Supposedly it is Matt Brinkman attacking the Wolf Eyes discography. Track 3 is perhaps the most brutal remix I have ever heard. Let me set the scene for you:

It is 800 AD. You are a druid on a misty moor. A UFO touches down during your pagan ritual, and the aliens mind meld you to teach you the secrets of advanced civilization. Your brain is full of terrible scorching magnesium lights. Magnetic lines are burned into the earth. The ground is scorched by radiation. The Elder Gods do not relent in filling your primitive mind with their secrets. Their spaceship hums.
