pehr records rocks. most of those are great. some of their roster fits the slowcore idea even if some are more in the somber indie pop realm. timonium's "self evidence"... download it. empress is classic. in that same vein, hyrdoplane and cat's miaow are also tremendous...

Idaho: Year After Year

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Friday, 24 January 2003 17:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

Would you really call [slint - spiderland LP] slowcore? I've owned it for a while, and do enjoy it, but wouldn't have thought to call it that. "Washer" perhaps, but the rest of it seems to be relatively upbeat and propulsive; not draggy.

Yes, i would wager that it was very impactful for most of the bands that will be discussed in this thread.

gygax!, Friday, 24 January 2003 17:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

A Seam track I would suggest checking out is "The Prizefighters" from the Lounge Ax comp (not the version on Pace Is Glacial, which incidentally is a very good record).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 24 January 2003 17:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

one of the finest low songs i've ever heard was low/piano magic/transient waves performing "sleep at the bottom"... rocketgirl put it out in '98.

my brother's band, Kepler, gets labelled slowcore more often than they would like. I think they're quite good, anyway. They have a number of releases available, and the latest, Missionless Days, is particularly nice. Should be some mp3s somewhere through here: http://www.cyberus.ca/~kepler/KepHome.htm

pauls00, Friday, 24 January 2003 17:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

My old band played a show with Kepler in Detroit a few years ago... I think we might've been slowcore too.

Moving on, Bedhead and Rex were alright.

kepler's pretty good. i owned one of their tmu releases at one point.

the only record i have ever returned. it seemed very mediocre, like the 'i mother earth' of indie rock.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Friday, 24 January 2003 18:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

the thread title is slow core... i can handle some of the later era stuff it just didn't mean as much as the early stuff (and bitch magnet).

gygax!, Friday, 24 January 2003 18:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

In slow-core, you down the tempo of the playing—-the vocals, the guitars, the bass, the drums. So your center is no longer necessarily occupied by sound.

Search: All three Radar Bros. albums, but especially the first self-titled.

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

Aren't the Radar Bros. more twee than slo-core?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Twee? All the songs on the self-titled album are either about alcoholism or suicide or both. Their music got a little sunnier on subsequent releases, but I don't think they're "twee" (at least not in the Heavenly/K Records sense).

Also, regarding Seam, The Problem With Me is my unqualified favorite.

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

I saw them play not too long ago and it was very sensitive, Elephant 6-style pop. Predictably, I hated it.

The Problem With Me is my fave Seam record as well.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

I like the music on Radar Bros records, but the lyrics can be goofy/twee/just plain bad.

Aaron A., Friday, 24 January 2003 21:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

If you get into Slowcore, you can try Sadcore as well. Here are some good starting points:

- Red House Painters - Ocean Beach
- s/t (Rollercoaster)
- Down Colorful Hill
- Idaho - Three sheets to the wind

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Sunday, 26 January 2003 22:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

search:
low - christmas, trust, secret name, long division, curtain hits the cast, Things we lost in the fire
red house painters - both self titled albums
dakota suite - signal hill
boa morte - soon it will come time to face the world outside
acetone - if you only knew

three bands who may or may not be slo-core:
mazzy star - she hangs brightly
radar bros. - and the surrounding mountains
slint - spiderland (washer and for dinner... could be termed slo-core)

DESTROY:
codeine - the white birch (brittle and unlovable)
american music club - mercury (prob not slo-core, but it's a load of arse.)

Low are gods, get as many of their albums as you can. Secret Name is the pick of the bunch, though. The perfect crystallisation of their sound.

Boa Morte are an Irish group, they were reviewed in a couple of British mags, but they pretty much disappeared without trace. Their album is a treasure, shamefully neglected. They play support to Teenage Fanclub, so I'll be seeing them on Wed. They have lovely deep, rich voices.

koogs, Monday, 27 January 2003 16:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Kilian, I can see why you'd find Codeine brittle and unlovable-- it's the tightness, the vocals that aren't overtly emotional. But that's exactly why I think they're great-- it's their refusal to follow th easy path, to do what's expected. They write terrific songs, and no one really sounds like them. Last week I listened to White Birch four times in a row on a long drive and never once got tired of it.

i think a distinction should be raised between being "slow-core" and merely slow...

gygax!, Tuesday, 28 January 2003 01:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

slo-core = sparse instrumentation. silent gaps between drum thwacks. in my opinion, that is.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 01:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

Does "slowcore" imply music that's also uniformly very quiet, or does slow music that blends quiet passages with very loud passages qualify as well? Aereogramme's music is pretty slow and plodding and sparse, but they also get really loud and screamy.

BTW, good call on Duster. Low and Bedhead fans who need another fix would do well to check out Contemporary Movement.

I am a certified corny Low fanatic but I think I like Bedhead even more. Bedhead at their best reached loftier heights (by just a hair) than Low, and Low has more meh material. But then Low were prolific compared to Bedhead. But then I like other Dallas things like the Cowboys and Rich Hippie.

bluetile lounge released a pretty classic album entitled 'lowercase'. it sounds quite a bit like codeine, except for the songs are longer/less structured. i believe this album came out on sunday records, of all places. i'm pretty sure i've seen bluetile mentioned elsewhere on ilm, however.

i don't know but they are huge now. it's fucking weird to me; duster played easily one of the worst shows I've ever seen, like they hadn't even bothered to practice. this was many many years ago admittedly and I'm sure it was an outlier.

yeah, i've seen a lot of clips with them where the guitars just sound bang out of tune. now that jason's left the band and they're probably playing new material (last album pretty tedious) idk if i can justify it. at any rate, tickets for NYC are resale, that's why they were so expensive.

maelin, Wednesday, 22 February 2023 22:03 (one year ago) link

my kid (16) is into duster which is just weird; he went and bought the new album on cassette (we don't even have a player). I was like, "wait, duster, that duster?"

i used to dislike codeine, but gave em another chance recently, and they have grown on me hugely. i think i referred to them as brittle and unolveable (about 20 years ago) upthread, but now i am excited about seeing them live this month.

i enjoyed this article, but it could have touched more upon this massive resurgence Duster have had, which fascinates me. i noticed recently that their spotify numbers were impressively large.

i googled and found this, which tries to explain the phenomenon: https://www.themarysue.com/what-are-the-most-popular-bands-on-tiktok-and-instagram/

no bad thing, of course. it's just unusual to strike such a big chord with a young fanabse, at such a late stage in your career.

yeah it's crazy. my son is into duster. I'm sure I said this elsewhere. I had to tell him they played the worst set I've ever seen a band play, it was like they had not practiced once, worse even than half the shows I've played myself and that is saying something. but good on them for capitalizing on this.

Best Duster item was the private DM that went public a year or 2 ago from the stepson of one of the members being wtf at his peers being so enamored with "my stepdad's shitty 90s band"*

Codeine is the best, both the Brokaw and Scharin lineups are massive for their own reasons.

Funny because I went through some waves with Codeine as well where the spell broke a bit. Like I remember listening to their plodding slowcore framework carrying the lyrics "I feel so sad, so bad today" and wondering if everyone was just fooling themselves as it all seemed a bit too on the nose in those moments. Like a straight parody of the style at worst. But I keep coming back around!
