I --- sadly -- must agree. Easily the worst thing (visually) they've ever done (that the music contained therein is equally sub-par is another matter).

I think this one is also prime candidate for the "smug" thread, as well. my apologies if this picture doesn't work... i am not versed in the ways of html.

Maybe this falls under "intentionally" ridiculous, but what exactly was poor Wendy driving at (*rimshot*) here?

Actually, this has got to be the cake-taker. Witness poor Bill Ward's disquietingly form-fitting trousers, rivalled in sheer ludicrousity only by Ozzy's inexplicable kimono/platform shoe combination.

Vic (Vic), Saturday, 11 January 2003 10:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

hmmm, three of the albums shown herein are from groups from Philadelphia (Hall & Oates, Britny Fox, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince). what does that mean?

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 11 January 2003 10:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

and the hall & oates album cover looks like someone put Brian Eno from his Roxy Music/Here Come the Warm Jets-"Hello, Sailor!" days (Hall) and Gary "Bababooey" Dell'Abate from Howard Stern (Oates) together.

Vic, having lived through that time I can tell you that I bought that Accept album without a second thought! I had heard 'Balls to the Wall' on the radio (believe or not, in the mid-eighties you could hear heavy metal by the likes of Accept on the radio in the US!). I certainly had no clue as to Udo's predilections ... but good on 'im!

I was just going to post the album cover, but the whole promo poster is really just that much more worthy...

original bgm, Saturday, 11 January 2003 17:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have a few thoughts:

I remember seeing the Hall and Oats LP in the bins years ago, and I kind of like the cover. You can't tell from the washed out look of the image above, but to me it kind of had a glam, Interview Magazine style look to it. And the original issue's sleeve had a reflective silver paper. How's the music?
I can't stand David Lee Roth, but like that cover. He's intentionally rediculous, anyway.
On the *back* of the Black Sabbath cover you can see Bill Ward's (checkered) underwear through his tights! It must have been airbrushed out on the front. And I think Ozzy's get-up is audacious and fetching.
That Manowar; oh my gosh. This is one record I really can't imagine bringing up to the counter to buy with a straight face. Who could?
I like that "Mechancal Animals" cover, but like even more the inside pic of La Manson done up exactly like Eno in the gatefold of "For Your Pleasure".
