According to Ken Burns & other accounts, he had to be cajoled into recording it, couldn't remember the lyrics when it became a left-field hit, and resented having to perform it.

I like that when the British Invasion happened the only American things that were able to stem the tide were "Surfin Bird", "Chapel of Love", and Louis Armstrong.

gary giddins also notes that LA wz a bit dismayed when he saw the words and music, but points out — correctly – that the fairly lame basic material was nevertheless transformed by the performance, which is a good summary of abt 65% of LA's output

Louis Armstrong really enjoyed reading erotic 'literature' to his girlfriends/wives.

That has got to be my favorite piece of music trivia EVAH. God, I'm turning into you people.

I saw the current Broadway revival today with the evergreen Bernadette Peters, and it's a perfectly calibrated diva-worship machine. (Yes I skipped seeing Bette Midler, cuz hell no.)

The supporting characters are mostly idiots, however.

There are three unstoppable Broadway ramrods in this beast. Which is two more than almost every other show that's not West Side Story or Guys & Dolls can muster.

But for real, "Put on Your Sunday Clothes" + "When the Parade Passes By" + "title song" = gtfo if you're not on board
