only cool epitaph band ever

ddd, Monday, 4 November 2002 18:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

Not really an Epitaph band, but don't forget that the Ikara Colt record gets a US release through them.

come on now...those swedes have such a hard on for Ian Svenonius that its not even funny anymore.

g.winogrand (g.winogrand), Monday, 4 November 2002 19:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, but they didn't make music that was LAME. until after they broke up.

Todd Burns, Monday, 4 November 2002 20:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Er, that came off harsh, but what I'm trying to say is Refused was tough guy hardcore and the Make Up was gospel soprano lite rock, comparatively.

Todd Burns, Monday, 4 November 2002 20:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Bah, Refused are pretty bland and boring to me. Like they sat around and said, "Hey! Let's rip off Nation of Ulysses and At The Drive In AT THE SAME TIME!"

And how can you buy their politics? It amazes me.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 4 November 2002 21:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah refused were tough guy hardcore then they bought a nation of U record. so inspired by the nation of U they checked out the newest ian band the makeup...and broke up the refused and formed the international noise conspiracy...probably the worst of their incarnations.

bleh. horrible. not to say that ian and his bands didnt rip off hords of other earlier bands but it doesnt sound as good with a swedish accent.

g.winogrand (g.winogrand), Monday, 4 November 2002 22:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think yer misrepresenting the band, though. The lead singer may have heard the Make Up and gone off and formed TINC, but the rest of the band is off doing TEXT. If you've heard that record, you'd probably think they heard Antioch Arrow and Iannis Xenakis records and tried to meld the two or something. In any case, Shape of Punk to Come=classic. All the rest before it, save "Rather Be Dead"=dud.

I generally like Buddyhead's taste in stuff they put out, despite not loving Refused like they do. Talk to me about TEXT!

So Refused were ripping off a minor band from El Paso at the same time they were bother 'coming up'?

That's... interesting.

the shape of punk to come is one of the tightest, most varied, concise, energetic, listenable records around.

at least half a dozen stone cold classics on here.

...and the dvd 'refused is fucking dead' is really well-made and intriguing.

totally classique

pity that dennis guy's sort of lost the plot. amusing about him being voted sweden's hottest man though. haha

Kinda amazed at the original posts on this thread in retrospective context. "Kickstarter CEO and RBMA Music Editor Celebrate Swedish Punks."

Song sounds fun to me. I like the cover, too:

Refused should return to being fucking dead imo.

The clean vocals are terrible, bunch of post-nu-metal nonsense, but even when you strip those away it's such a huge retread down to a couple of herky jerky stop start riffs that might as well have been sampled from the last album. Hopefully the rest of the album is less reunion tour and more interesting.

vocals really bumming me out too

gr8080, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 17:05 (eight years ago) link

I really like the song, don't mind the vocals too much, kinda remind me of The International Noise Conspiracy, Dennis' band right after Refused.

Marty8501 (Marty Innerlogic), Tuesday, 28 April 2015 17:19 (eight years ago) link

this song is a blast imo. produced by shellback!

are the International Noise Conspiracy dead? kinda liked his vocals for that band better than in Refused

I only made it through the first half so far, but the new one (War Music) might be even worse.

But maybe it gets better in the second half? Lots of really positive reviews out there.
