ooh ooh ooh can i be the first one to say that I DIDN'T HAVE ANY INTEREST TO LOSE? heh, thanks!

katie, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah actually, I'm up for Turkey cos the guys in the shop here are sound but I have lost a bit of interest. I think it always happens towards the end. It feels like all the christmas presents have been opened at this point Clive.

Tae Dae Min Kuk

Nathan Barley, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

What Nathan said. Bring on them last matches (except for the third-place one -- does anyone actually watch that?).

Ned Raggett, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nee, nee mun pish.

Still enjoying it although my plan of spending the whole of the first week watching every game has had the desired effect: if I miss a half here or there I don't mind.

Tim, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

pishbus is real!!

mark s, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Strangely, despite England not being affected by it at all, I *am* feeling like the whole thing has been devalued by all the refereeing errors. I want to be pleased for South Korea being there but it's hard.

N., Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

btw I want Turkey to win a Turkey-Germany final. On penalties.

N., Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

The final few matches are often boring...so yeah, I've lost interest.

jel --, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Is a macth like a Scottish match, N.?

Ally C, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I want S.Korea to beat Germany with no controversies and ideally in open play, if they're going to beat them - the effing reffing controversies have tarnished their success a bit for me though I think talk of conspiracy is a bit ridiculous. I wanted Sengal to beat Turkey but now they haven't, go Turkey say I - to cause a big, untainted upset. (Also England currently seem to raise their game for 'big occasions' and having the World Champions in their Euro 2004 qualifying group would count!)

Tom, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, I was up at 7:15 for Spain v South Korea despite the dual miseries of the previous day, so I'm still keen. It's about time we saw some GOALS in the knockout phase.

Any plans for communal SF/F watching in London this week?

Michael Jones, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

what is this thing you call the world cup?

Queen Don't you point those squiggly things at G, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'll still watch the rest - maybe even the third place game, if no better offer comes along - but my interest has waned considerably since England lost.

As for plans, I'll just pop out from work for the semis, but I'd be up for a central London meet for the Final, if there is any interest.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well *ahem* MY team is not out

Chupa-Cabras, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'll still watch: in for a penny, as the saying goes. It's not like you can get every match on broadcast TV, anyway;>

Nichole Graham, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I find it's the reverse. I become more interested as it enters the later stages - same with Wimbledon. There are just too many matches at the beginning. By 'too many' I mean too many to watch, I know there have to be that many in the competition.

David, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I echo David. I didn't even watch the first few US matches, but I've tuned in for many top 16 matches and I plan to watch the rest (well, maybe not that lousy 3rd place one).

Vinnie, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Fans should get to name an entire new team for the consolation match. Politicians, porn stars, book reviewers, etc., from the respective nations, all compelled to play at least a half.

Benjamin, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

GERMANY 1 up, Ballack scored - the ref has less than 5 minutes to chuck South Korea a lifeline.

Ballack has picked up a YELLOW so will miss the final.. if things stay the same.

DJ Martian, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

According to the BBC live feed Hamann was "like a vacuum cleaner in front of the German back line". Hein? I'm envisaging one of those cylindrical vacuum cleaners with the cutesy eyes painted on.

Tim, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Jonesy, anyone else dossing about, I'm more than up for watching the Brazil - Turkey game tomorrow, give me a bell as I'm only on Disco Dave's computer for a bit then off line til Thursday probably.

chris, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

For some reason over 100 Korean supporters are sitting outside M&S on Oxford Street, chanting, singing, banging drums and doing Mexican waves. It's quite a strange sight, people are leaning out of office windows aand applauding.

Anna, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

And now they are doing the can can. No, really.

Anna, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Are you sure it isn't the can't can't Anna? AHAHAHA ahem.

Ally C, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Chris: I'm afraid I've wasted so much time in front of the telly today (plus a 3-hour round-trip to Dulwich) that I must stay home tomorrow and busy myself with college work...

Probably unpopular opinion -- I am not in favour of World Cup in Qatar, but find Morgan convincing here, and think Maitlis shows her true character in citing key progressive thinkers like Lineker and Baddiel.

Think it's probably a poor development that the debate seems to have moved to the human rights situation in Qatar (which is of course terrible but on a par with many other countries, some of which are participating) and away from the thousands of human beings who died building the stadiums.

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 18 November 2022 10:09 (one year ago) link

do you read the LRB article about the qatar world cup?

conrad, Friday, 18 November 2022 13:55 (one year ago) link

I don't. I am probably more than one issue behind.

the pinefox, Friday, 18 November 2022 19:18 (one year ago) link

I mean, Morgan seems to be saying “if you take that argument to its endpoint, then no one should play in the World Cup” but if you take Morgan’s argument to its endpoint, it’s basically just “lol why bother boycotting anyone, nothing really matters”. I don’t know what the answer is but I’m not sure it’s nihilism?

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 18 November 2022 20:50 (one year ago) link

participation in a world cup isn't the same as hosting. don't think it's hypocritical to say that FIFA shouldn't award the world cup to countries that outlaw homosexuality.

oscar bravo, Friday, 18 November 2022 20:59 (one year ago) link

so no I don't find Morgan convincing

oscar bravo, Friday, 18 November 2022 21:00 (one year ago) link

do get annoyed when athletes or sports presenters do the whole kick it out/ rainbow laces thing then post pictures on Insta of their vacation in Dubai tho.

oscar bravo, Friday, 18 November 2022 21:03 (one year ago) link

I mean, it's appalling that thousands died to produce this sporting event. As far as I'm concerned, no one should watch or participate, even though the damage has already been done. It's like dancing on someone's grave.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 18 November 2022 21:04 (one year ago) link

So no, it doesn't fucking have to go on.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 18 November 2022 21:06 (one year ago) link

Hypocrisy(*) is impossible to avoid without being a complete moral saint and ascetic. So I don't find Morgan convincing either.

(*)I wanted to say "as Morgan defines it" here but I think the more general point stands, though Morgan's definition is particularly unforgiving.

I think if you were looking at queer rights, and then researching the participants record on these issues it's true you would never watch any WC. It's a cultural boycott. Somewhat similar to many people who wish a loss on a team (notably Croatia at the last WC final) before a match. I have often been nonplussed about that stuff.

There is something of a different order when thousands have died. More so than the displacement of people when Olympic sites are built.

Anyway I am watching it.

AB has a view.

“Qatar should be able to enforce strict rules around alcohol, those are the laws of the land”.

Literally nobody is making it host the World Cup and therefore acting as a point of convergence for every culture on earth. It’s hosting an event, clue is in the name.

the pinefox, Saturday, 19 November 2022 23:25 (one year ago) link

Hosting the World Cup isn’t a human right either. If you want to host the biggest sporting event in the world you should be able to extend hospitality to people of different faiths. If you can’t, don’t host it.

Today, I’ll be thinking of the thousands of workers who died building the stadiums for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

I’ll be thinking of LGBT+ people fighting for their human right to love.

And I’ll be supporting local grassroots football in Islington North! pic.twitter.com/48KYv02Y7r

Really good piece on WC politics. Every bid winner has bribed since '98. Slave labour used at the last WC too. The next WC will be very carbon intensive too. The world is fucked.

A grifter on Gary Neville.

Taking Qatari money & then attacking Infantino & Blatter for being 'divisive' is unreal levels of hypocrisy. Lost huge amounts of respect for Neville.

When you take money from unsavoury sources - that's up to you. But you lose credibility in claiming to be self-righteous. https://t.co/zFcYKzav4v
