I like ballads, but I like something that tells a story (Richard Marx "Hazard" is a favourite). Anything with a slightly dubious lyrics which I can use my paedophile voice on and twist into a sick, perverted song is always a favourite. "Where's The Playground Suzy" is filthy when I sing it. As was This Is Hardcore.

Pete, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

My first and most successful karaoke performance was 'You Sexy Thing', which was picked for me. My biggest failure has been 'One Day I'll Fly Away'. The one I want to do is 'She's The One'.

N., Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i've only done one so far (eminem). looking forward to doing Marti Webb "Take That Look Off Your Face". Want karaoke NOW!

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"Don't you forget about me", though I feel I've done that too often now. My rendition of "Sweet Caroline" will appear very soon, once I've perfected singing along in the car.

Boys, never attempt "Take on me" unless you can arrange a swift kick in the goollies at the relevant points.

Tag, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

My take on 'Man I Feel Like a Woman' has never been forgotten by those who witnessed it. Everyone wants to forget my version of 'Mirror Man'.

alext, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I did Take On Me once, and I know exactly what you mean. Second chorus round I administer self bollock tweak which did the job.

Pete, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

can't... type... laughing...

katie, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm quite bad at most things but I like songs with an easy range and not too much actual singing. My favourite to do for a long time was "One More Time" but my best evah karaoke performance I reckon was "Antmusic". I'm rarely drunk enough to do any movements. Worst idea was doing the Teletubbies, easy.

Tom, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've never done a karaoke. I do a mean version of lots of songs in the shower though. Daft Punk Too Long is a great one, despite the repetition.

Ronan, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i wish my karaoke guy had 'this is hardcore'!

maura, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

British culture is still very lazy about ghettoising things.

N., Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh, I will never do karaoke. I know how bad my voice is. It moves beyond comically bad into the truly painful.

Even when I was I practically coerced into it by this intimidating bitch-diva friend of my then-boyfriend I just will not do it.

Nicole, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

My standard karaoke song is "When Doves Cry". I was happiest when I found a place that had "Somebody", though. My best karaoke moment ever was singing back-up for my brother on "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds"; I have yet to work up the nerve to go back to that place.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The night Dan did When Dove's Cry at the KoC I tried to follow him up (and hour or so later) with Purple Rain. There was a noticable difference in quality.

Pete, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I will sing anything that can be enhanced by my Raw London Edge (aka tone deaf flat voice) if I am drunk enough. Me and Sarah's Do You Really Like It? went down well. However my last attempt was cruelly foiled by the KoC which does not know the meaning of the phrase 'EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT' as there was no karaoke on 28 December.

Many many songs have forever been ruined / improved by hearing my friends' / other peoples' renditions.

Emma, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

With Alex T safely back in Edinburgh I'm up for a go at Perfect Gentleman by the way. Who wants to do the girl's bit?

Tom, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ooooh, my dream thread! Where do I begin?
When you become a karaoke addict, you slowly realise that you may love a song, but it doesn't love you. Like "Islands In The Stream." The trick is to go wild and try anything - you'll soon know which ones suit you to a T. Here are some of mine:
Don't Speak - No Doubt
Alone/These Dreams/What About Love - Heart
Kiss Me - Sixpence None The Richer
Heaven - Bryan Adams
Automatic - Utada Hikaru (j-pop)
Sometimes - Britney Spears
We're All Alone - Boz Scaggs
Eye In The Sky - Alan Parsons Project

Elisa K, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I will listen to Perfect Gent tonight and see how the gurl bit goes (also light a candle to the SPIRIT OF ALEX T alright maybe just have some whisky instead) and maybe I will do it. Actually this is a lie, I bet she will probably go all diva-ish and my voice will fail to work. Yes, DO YOU REALLY LIKE IT was fantastic. Perhaps I will just rock the UK-G massif. Is there any Mis-Teeq?

Sarah, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The girl bit is the rap bit Sarah i.e. I was born with the body of the goddesses / Do any of you know how hard this is / I can flex in 25 positions / But I still have to pay for my tuition. It is in other words the best bit you lucky thing. Apart from "TEN GRAND!" etc. And the ho no bits.

Tom, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Girl bit in Perfect G VERY EASY. If I recall it is half sung, half spoken, half rapped (ie peasy) and the only difficulty is getting the stress on the correct syllables. 'My name is hope yeah / I was blessed with the body of the goddesses / have you any idea how hard this is / I can flex in 25 positions / but I only work here to pay my tuition / ...' then some stuff about her and Wyclef against the odds and how they're going to where there folk ride horses / no cars.

alext, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I did "Wild Thing" at the tender age of sixteen in a small Dordogne village, where speaking English -> Rock God. I recommend it.

Sam, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've only ever done it solo once - "Wichita Lineman" in a pub in Whitehaven in front of people I knew I'd never see again (I left for London the following week). Pam & I turned "These Boots Are Made For Walking" into the Lee'n'Nancy duet it always should've been on Berwick Street last year. I kept submitting "No Regrets" as a request at the KoC, and it never came up. My bottle's gone now.

(I'd still love to do Heaven 17's "Temptation" with a hot soul diva. I might advertise for one in the Croydon Gazette).

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Okay new plans for tonight, I shall study the lyrical style and flow of GURL BIT on Perfect Gent instead of tackling the wardrobe. Phew.

Sarah, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I did the Humpty Dance once, and improvised:

"now just let me introduce myself / my name is Dare / pronounced with the 'air' / and oh ladies, you know that I am far from square"

which of course marked me as being just that.

Dare, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The first and only time I did karaoke i sang "The wheels of the truck go round and round." Off key, off tempo and I took off my pants and squirmed on the floor. I was not allowed back. Conservatives...

At my local karaoke haunt/bowling alley there is a regular (young and rather cute, actually). We call him Tracksuit Boy, because he always wears a shiny Adidas track suit. Tracksuit Boy only does impersonations, with slight exaggeration for effect. He does a hilarious Prince and his Neil Diamond is spot on. I can't believe how many people waste this great opportunity to do performance art.

Unfortunately, many karaoke DJs are frustrated singers who take the whole thing too seriously. I jumped up and down once during a Who song, hit my head on an overhead beam, and then the Gloria Estefan-wannabe DJ wouldn't play any of my requests for the rest of the night.

Caroline Sibley, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I have never done Karaoke...if I did, I would sing:

1. Livin' On A Prayer
2. Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now
3. I Would Do Anything For Love
4. Every Rose Has Its Thorn
5. Crazy Crazy Nights
6. Mr Brownstone.

My all time best, ebeneezeer goode by the shamen (with every word of the rap correct (because i'm a sad get)), although tainted love was my standard for years, recently have tried branching out, although still tend to stick to alt/indie type ones (Pretty in Pink, Maggie May, Panic (although the KoC versh is well short)). Pete's Hazard and Tag's Don't you forget about me are both top notch though...

Tonight Matthew, I'm going to sing 'Song 2' in the style of Dean Martin. I always put a little 'lounge' twist on everything I sing. Even 'Atrocity Exhibition': 'Forrrr entertainment (whoa yeahhh) they watch his body a-twi-itch (whoo!)' Bring on the KoC!

I've only done Karaoke twice due to fears over nastiness of my singing voice, I did "last train to Clarkesville" the night I got my A-level results and "some might say" as a duet with a random stranger the last night I lived in Chesterfield. I think they were awful

chris, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ronan, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Old Man Reacts to Cloud (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 25 March 2023 22:34 (one year ago) link

Last time I tried the live version, next time I will try the studio version which presents another challenge.

Old Man Reacts to Cloud (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 25 March 2023 22:39 (one year ago) link

Almost feel guilty or nervous about enjoying my current karaoke jag so much and am afraid it will all dry up and I will turn back into Michigan J. Frog once again.

Old Man Reacts to Cloud (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 25 March 2023 22:46 (one year ago) link

The challenge of the studio version of “Suspicious Minds” being that it is slower which prolongs the agony of trying to do justice to the chorus and breakdown. Elvis’s high notes have still got some amazing bottom going on like nobody else’s. It’s like chocolate or … velvet even.

Old Man Reacts to Cloud (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 25 March 2023 23:11 (one year ago) link

Anyway, here’s another semi-pro tip: “Hey Jude” aside, you can pretty much sing any Beatles song you want to that you can find a track to and if you do even a half decent job people will respond since most know and love every single one of their tunes. I sometimes get sick of the phenomenon of The Beatles and their monolithic presence in the monoculture but I still can enjoy their music in isolation tracks, in limited doses. But they don’t really need me anymore, Rob Sheffield is taking good care of them.

Old Man Reacts to Cloud (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 25 March 2023 23:17 (one year ago) link

Just now hearing Death Cab for Cutie singing “Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)” and reminded that I was thinking about singing that last year like I was Darlene Love on David Letterman or something but ran out of time and couldn’t get over there. Maybe I can do it this year if we make it to December.

Old Man Reacts to Cloud (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 25 March 2023 23:20 (one year ago) link

Which reminds me that I did two Merle Haggard tunes, “Mama Tried” and “Pancho and Lefty.” The first got a good response, the second crickets but I felt really good about it, it was really fun to do both Willie and Merle, and I may try it again. Also checking out some more Merle material for future use.

We were waiting at the end of our holiday for the coach transfer, about 30 mins early. So, we went into a bar where it was kicking and it was KJ time.
I put me down for doing "Ebeneezer Goode", what the hell, thinking we'd be long gone. Five mins later, I'm called.
Threw myself into it, kept up with the lyrics, did an "into the crowd", handed the mic back at the end, then grabbed our bags and out to the bus which came 5 mins later.
Definitely an "Elvis has left the building" moment.

Still doing this. There is some kind of brinkmanship of singing something a little too high and seeing how it goes. Just tried “In Dreams.” Pretty much knew I would have to drop the last line an octave but there were plenty of rough patches before that.

Cosmo’s Hacienda (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 05:03 (eleven months ago) link

I feel like whatever you can hit in a rehearsal at home (lol 'rehearsal' for karaoke, god i'm pathetic), you should deduct like 15% of that range at a karaoke night. something about alcohol plus nerves and having never done it before leaves the notes you thought you were just hitting at home to disappear.

nothing worse than being like 30 seconds into a song and going "fuck this was a mistake"

I went out drinking with some old friends beforehand a few weeks ago and my one nurses drink extended to two. Cosmo’s Hacienda (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 18:12 (eleven months ago) link

Tonight I overcame my lifelong fear of singing in front of people and did karaoke for the first time ever at a friend's birthday party. It was at one of those places where you're in a little room with just your friends, so less intimidating. I started with Tik Tok by Kesha, then did Dancing in the Dark, then Fast Car toward the end of the night. It was ridiculously fun and now I finally understand why people like karaoke.
