Gosh, I'm sorry, Mr. Noodle, did my personal abuse of you temporarily interfere with your personal abuse of someone else?

EmVee, Saturday, 6 August 2005 20:58 (eighteen years ago) link

That would be great if it was coherent or justified. Meanwhile: u still talk illiterate shite.

Anti-Pope Consortium (noodle vague), Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:01 (eighteen years ago) link

In what deconstructed alternate reality do you reckon yourself qualified to lecture me about literacy or coherence? Talk about tin ears...

EmVee, Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Qualification aside, I didn't sum up a whole bunch of disparate philosophers in one pat, unjustified sentence. Also, I didn't use ugly metaphors like "cretinism" to round up my distaste for thinkers I don't understand.

Next excuse please.

If only we could prove our prejudices were true.

Well, there's proof, and then there's proof.

The ability to constuct a working atomic bomb rather tends to confirm the essential correctness of the theory upon which its construction is based, to my way of thinking at least. At least there is a strong causal coupling there.

But a fundamentalist could just as well theorize that any atomic bomb explodes for no other reason than that it is God's will. Furthermore, had God ever wished to, He could have exploded a bathtub or a horse in the same way and with the saem effect, and should God ever tire of exploding atomic bombs in this way, they would cease to operate.

Clearly, this God-based theory fully explains the operation of an atomic bomb and cannot be disproved. Therefore it should be taught on an equal footing with conventional physics, right?

xpost-> Noodle

I submit that "seeing all truth claims as ideological" is reactionary, not to mention extraordinarily stupid. Your insistence that I be polite and nuanced toward your sacred cows is, under the circumstances, hilarious, though perfectly understandable.

EmVee, Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:31 (eighteen years ago) link

x post

Which post-modernist/structuralist philosophers have claimed that atomic bombs can be constructed through faith? I must've missed them essays.

Willful ignorance of science is obviously A Bad Thing. Willful ignorance of philosophy okay tho right?

Anti-Pope Consortium (noodle vague), Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:31 (eighteen years ago) link

double x post,

"seeing all truth claims as ideological" isn't exackly pomo. I think Marx prob'ly subscribed to that train of thought.

I'm not upset that you're boldly butchering my sacred cows; I just have this mad theory that people who use bigoted language are betraying a certain unpleasantness in their non-existent souls.

Anti-Pope Consortium (noodle vague), Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:36 (eighteen years ago) link

use bigoted language

???

EmVee, Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Nice come-back.

Anti-Pope Consortium (noodle vague), Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:41 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm sorry. Perhaps I was unclear.

What the fuck are you talking about?

EmVee, Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:44 (eighteen years ago) link

I like how Althusser invented Relativism in yr original quote. I like how the ad hominem argument destroys that Relativism what he invented. I like how you don't understand how yr choice of thread title might imply a certain level of ad hominem wankery. Do you got anything un-hominem to say?

Anti-Pope Consortium (noodle vague), Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:47 (eighteen years ago) link

I am just trying to stir up some deviltry. It would be charming to believe that atomic bombs were a social construct, don't you think?

Aimless (Aimless), Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Atomic Bombs are more of an anti-social construct.

Anti-Pope Consortium (noodle vague), Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Since my original quote was, how you say, a quote, I'll leave it to its author to defend its wording. "Cretinism" qua thread title is Creationism, The Thread minus an a and an o, i.e., a Pun.

Not a very good one, I grant you.

Shall we discuss some more my alleged conclusion-jumping?

Or is this the point where you revert to "corniness" canards and tiresome generation-baiting?

EmVee, Saturday, 6 August 2005 22:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Who are you again?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 6 August 2005 22:03 (eighteen years ago) link

Your original quote was followed by your original comment: "(this is)exactly right", which makes me think you ought to be willing to defend its wording. Please feel free to quote my reversion to "corniness" or generation-baiting. I missed it. Please feel free to explain why relativism is pomo, or vice versa. Please feel free.

Anti-Pope Consortium (noodle vague), Saturday, 6 August 2005 22:07 (eighteen years ago) link

i was really hoping this would be a picture thread

I get testy about odd things when I've had a few.
