Etymology: trade name, from Latin, higher, comparative of excelsus high, from past participle of excellere: fine curled wood shavings used especially for packing fragile items.

From the FAQ:
C/D stands for Classic or Dud? The question is asking answerers to decide whether something is classic (i.e. good) or dud (i.e. bad) and to give reasons.

S/D stands for Search and Destroy? It is asked of a category - insects or Smiths records, for instance. The answerer says which items in the category they'd advise people to search for and which they'd like to see destroyed. Giving reasons.

POO/OPO stands for Pick One Only or One Pick Only. It is asked of a category and the respondent has to pick one item from that category as the best - giving reasons.

FAP stands for Fancy A Pint. It is used to ask fellow posters whether they would like to go out for a drink.

Thank you, Maria. I'm about to read (or possibly reread) the FAQ, which is something that I really should have done before posting this. I'm sure that I've read it before but cannot seem to retain things very well these days.

OPO and POO are crappy, though, so don't start threads like that.

the -x0r suffix replaces x or k sounds for comic effect. "Sucks" becomes "sux0r" etc. It's hacker speak I think (?), viz "1337" ("leet", short for "elite") and the way Norman Pashmina writes.

Excelsior is an ejaculation of praise, which I assume was picked up from Stan Lee's very extensive use of it in old Marvel comics. xpost is short for crosspost, i.e. postings crossing leading to possible confusion.

Man alive! Still wondering about Pleasant Plains and what the devil his/her reply meant. It threw me for a while there, being addressed as "Mr Thurgood". Nobody has (routinely) called me that for a couple of years now because, at present, I work in a school for kids with learning disabilities (e.g. Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Down's Syndrome, ADHD, epilepsy etc.) and my students use my first name. It's obviously preferable to "Sir" (which I always detested) or "Mr Thurgood" (the pronunciation of which they fucked up one way or another - how difficult is it?). Anyways, thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. You are good people.

That always confused me too. I wasn't sure what it meant, at first I thought it was a perversion of "grabbed" or "crept", i.e. "I grebt her arse" or "Roxymuzak grebt in through the window" or "Ned grebt up behind me and grebt my arse" and so on.

Sorta double reference -- 'roxor' and similar hacker speak influenced the name of the board, but 'x' also acts as something of a general value signifier in math (and maybe logic as well?). Since there were two chief boards by the time a unique server was setup, the idea was that this encompassed both of them and all the other ones as well.
