The casting, the concept, the title---Makes me want to spew.

as well as its inherent falsness. Actually, NOTHING has to give. That's the sad part.

one year passes...
Testimony to the power of two '70s icons in making a bigscreen-sitcom, sub-Nora Ephron gagfest watchable and plausibly human.

Such a terrible, terrible movie.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 16:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Better than Barton Fink or Irreversible, however.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 16:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Keanu Reaves put in a riveting performance. He seemed almost human-like.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 16:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Those are odd films to compare it to. Why?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 16:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Keanu looked grrrreat.

I was just spitting at "n/a," esp if it's the same dipshit as usual.

oooh, i saw this on a plane and it wasn't so bad, for a plane movie. i wouldn't have paid to see it however

foxy boxer (stevie), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 16:33 (eighteen years ago) link

That still doesn't answer my question. Morbs. Has n/a professed his love of Barton Fink and Irreversible?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 16:33 (eighteen years ago) link

If anyone doesn't toe the Doc's aesthetic line, they're obviously the world biggest fans of the Coen Bros. and think Irreversible was the greatest film ever, jaymc. I'm never quite sure why he picked those two to be his strawman standbys.

WTFever, Barton Fink is not just so much better than this movie, it is better than almost all of all yous guyses favorite movies! Jesus!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 16:37 (eighteen years ago) link

"Something's Gotta Give" is still one of my 5 favorite Basetie Boys songs!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 16:37 (eighteen years ago) link

dr. morbius, you are such a fanny!!

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 16:39 (eighteen years ago) link

An ass or a fanatic? (guilty of both in certain contexts)

(nickalicious, check out The Big Knife)

It's really sad that Jack & Diane missed Billy Wilder's prime and had to settle for a big payday with this Nancy Meyers clod. And STILL they brought it to occasional life.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 17:01 (eighteen years ago) link

It's only horrible in that it wasn't an art film. As a stupid, Hollywood romantic comedy, it wasn't bad. .. OK, not the BEst sHrc, but entertaining if you're not expecting anything good and you're on a plane with nothing to read. If they had used Pere Ubu for the soundtrack, I might have given it a higher grade.

Why do people in romantic comedies always live in expensive houses?

NUH UH. BENNY AND JOON!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 17:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Believe me, I have had to watch many many romantic comedies because I have a girlfriend, and this is NOT a good romantic comedy. It's not a good movie at all. The best thing I can say about it is that it had Amanda Peet in it, who I like but who should fire her agent because she's only ever in terrible terrible movies.

I have never seen Irreversable and don't think I would like it. I do, however, love Barton Fink.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 17:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Nicholson leering and letting butt hang out > Owen Wilson slumming

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 18:04 (eighteen years ago) link

I actually agree with that.

'this one is called... ****TRAFIED!'

'some day'
'we shall'
'all be one'
*scratch from heaven*

foxy boxer (stevie), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 22:34 (eighteen years ago) link

this movie is pretty bad, i largely agree with n/a. and the main reason it's bad besides being kinda shrill and unlikeable throughout is that it's at LEAST 45 minutes too long. it really really overstays its welcome.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 04:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Nah, despite the rotten script, Keaton and the Jack take it over midstream and make it quite touching. (re-view when you're over 55) Unfortunately there's a seen-from-the-horizon Parisian climax and a nauseating feelgood coda.

"Pretty bad" is reserved for making Odets an unfunny joke loaded with portentous sub-Lynchian non-meaning.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 12:20 (eighteen years ago) link

i haven't read the thread, but to me it was weirdly like 'gaspar noe does barton fink' -- can't put my finger on why.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 12:25 (eighteen years ago) link

hopefully i will not have to see this movie again when i'm over 55
