Classic for Mannekin Pis.

I like my Belgian Waffles made with BLUEBERRIES.

Ally, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No, strawberries. And whipped cream. I could appreciate blueberries, though. Oh, what a decision!

Avant Garde FAshion
Bowling Balls
Pomme Frites
Being everyones bitch
Classic even before the beer.
but the imperalism was total dud

I've been to Belgium and it was shit. They had porn on the TVs in the service station.

Greg, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've only been to Antwerp. The beer doesn't even taste like beer. Plastic Bertrand is awesome though.

Kris, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've heard that Antwerp is great. And isn't Antwerp also the city with the great founding myth -- that it's on the spot where some medieval hero or other cut off the hand of some nasty ogre? Nathalie?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Belgium is lovely. Nice cities, great chips, great beer. What's not to like?

Ally C, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Boring fat Belgian bastards!!! Just kidding, 'lil bit of Python humor there. Yes, I believe Antwerp (which is a totally nice city)'s name means "cut off hand" or something like that. If you go to the center of the town (and it is a really nice town), there's a big fountain with a giant hand spouting water.

Search: I also like Brugges (that's in Belgium, right?) being a craven tourist. Enjoyable canal ride, and on first impression I thought it would be a tiny town from the outside; then you get inside, and find out what a labyrinth it really is.

Dud: Louvain...the college town, didn't seem too exciting.

Joe, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

From my many visits there I remember you all being gorgeous. Nice place as well.

Graham, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Antwerp was also apparently the home of Rubens. Which definitely makes it classic.

Anyway, according to my Let's Go Europe tourbook: "According to legend, the river ports of the city were once guarded by a merciless giant named Druoon Antigroon, who punished toll evaders by cutting off their hands. His reign of terror was ended by a brave Roman soldier who cut the giant's hand off and threw it in the river. The name 'Antwerp', some claim, comes from a combination of the Dutch 'hand' and 'werpen' (to throw). Less colorful linguists dismiss this derivation, claiming the actual derivation from the term for a sandbank or silt deposit." I knew I had read the story about someone chopping off someone's hand from somewhere!

The Let's Go also says that Antwerp has over 300 bars and nightclubs and a hella DJ scene.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Brussels is lovely, i really like that big molecule thing you can go in. thats cool. too many blizzards when i went though

gareth, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I love Belgium and I like Belgians. The longer it retains its reputation for dullness in the UK the better, because who wants big crowds of British tourists fouling up the place?

I love the beer and the food and the bars and - most of all - "My Suitor" by Berntholer.

Tim, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

What Tim H said.

Is Marc Arcadipane Belgian? He bloody well should be.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

wow, someone else likes Acardipane!

gareth, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Acardipane = german, and yeah i like him too. Belgium = ace of course. Great beer, even better fashion, friendly people, R&S, Front 242, friet met samoerai saus, good food and last but not least beautiful women.

Omar, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

one year passes...
I'm also very keen on Belgium for similar reasons to Omar. The beer is the best in the world, the food is excellent, their love of techno highly endearing. I could really do without with the neo-fascist Vlaams Blok however.

I also like Marc Acardipane (though he seems to have gone to ground of late). So did Belgium. IIRC 'I like it loud' was a top ten hit there.

This year's unwanted holiday report: I love Brabo Records in Antwerp. Mmm. Rockist, yeah, but that's me.

Plus hearing French tourists having to lower themselves to speaking English as the best way to communicate with Flemish people is absolutely CLASSIC for any Englishperson who has been grumped and snooted at by Parisians for not pronouncing their words exactly right or using the wrong gender or needing to hear everything halfspeed because their damn stupid habit of not pronouncing the last half of any word means that every word sounds like several others. HAH. ;)

Rebecca (reb), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 19:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Any language that brings the world words like "fijnewas afpompen" and flings together "ijk"s quite so merrily is also absolutely classic in my book. Although I still haven't worked out whether Ws are pronounced like Ws or Vs, it seemed to vary, as did which we had to resort to to get understood. Confused.)

Rebecca (reb), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 19:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was in Brussels for about 5 hours. It was nice although maybe a little boring cos we got a taxi to get us to Amsterdam as quickly as possible ;)

Michael Bourke, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 20:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

You're all missing something crucial.

The chocolate, how could you forget? (I have been scared by going to visit relatives who then lived in Brussels the Easter I was nine. There were slabs and rabbits and castles and lace work and every concievable thing ever made out of chocolate in every other shop window. And my Aunty Jenny organised the biggest Easter egg hunt for my cousins and I.)

On a more mature level, I cannot spell or pronounce her name, but fashoin designer Ann Demeulemeester. And Dries Van Noten and Martin Margiela (although he does come across as being as mad as a box of pegs). Never been keen on Victor and Rolf though. There's impractical, there's radical, there's visionary and leading the way and then there's putting large and random bits of padding everywhere to make already ill looking models look even more disfigured than the poor things do already. I well aware that all high fashion is bloody stupid, but they take the Belgian chocolate covered biscuit.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 23:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

When just a month ago I visited Antwerp, there was this guy standing beside his car on the autobahn, he looked like a time-travelling gestapo agent, with a long brown leather overcoat, very scary, he gave the creeps...than my friend told me he's "just the belgian police"....

Anyway, Antwerp is my favorite European city, I could live there! I bought my first designer clothes there: a big Raf Simons sweater!

I've only been through Belgium on the train, but it looked very pretty. I also like "My Suitor" by Berntholer. In fact I'd go so far as to include it in my top ten greatest records ever. I also like a Belgian new beat song called "Mandate my ass", merely for having the greatest song title ever.

tag, Thursday, 5 September 2002 09:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have been to Belgium airport, it was massive. You could see the molecule thing on the way in, and lots of waterways. I used to like Belgian Football Round-Up on Eurosport, but it has since disappeared. I liked it because there weren't too many people at the games and the weather was generally bad and the players looked like they were enjoying themselves. Also my favourite film of all time is Belgian -'Rosetta'. It's about a girl who lives in a caravan and it is filmed with a wobblecam and I'm going to cry all over my keyboard in a minute.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 5 September 2002 09:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I liked Rosetta too. And "Toto le heros" is Belgian, I liked that. I saw another one called "The carriers are waiting" which was bonkers, in a good way.

All this talk of Belgium makes me want to go there properly. What's the weather like in October? And how does one get from Brussels to Bruges?

Sorry, I'm, err, waffling.

tag, Thursday, 5 September 2002 09:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm sure the ideal mode of transport would be by gaily painted canal boat.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 5 September 2002 10:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

tag - the weather here in October is not all that different from what it would be in London. Brussels has a reputation for above-average amounts of rainfall, however. It's lovely today, tho'. There is a regular train service to Brugge from Bruxelles. Takes about an hour.

Jeff W (Jeff W), Thursday, 5 September 2002 10:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thank you Jeff. How much does this here train cost then? Always assuming I can't get a gaily painted canal boat, of course.

tag, Thursday, 5 September 2002 11:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

I want to go to Bruges too. Fancy some company, Tag?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 5 September 2002 11:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

er, Nathalie would know the cost better than I since she often makes the trip. But it's very cheap (especially at weekends: around 10 euros for a return ticket then I think).

Jeff W (Jeff W), Thursday, 5 September 2002 11:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

I looked up the price of the train and yes, it's 10 euros each way. A bargain. We're a bit skint right now, but I missed out on summer holiday so...have air miles will travel. At the moment it's a close run thing between Brussels/Bruges and Berlin. I love Berlin very much and E's very keen to go there, but I'd also like to go somewhere new. Tim, I'll keep you posted.

ok, I'm off to Brussels at the end of next month. I want to see the Manneken Pis and the Atomium. I was reading on a site today that they dress the Manneken Pis up in various costumes! Apparently, he has over 600!

What are the best bars and clubs in Brussels then? And are there any cool record shops?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 26 January 2004 22:04 (twenty years ago) link

Hey Mark, I see that you're keeping up the euro travelling!
There are plenty of cool record shops in BXL, my favourite being le Bonheur. Check out the Time Out Brussels website for some good adresses.
Bars, S: Cafe Belga, Cafe Central, l'Archiduc, Cafe Malte

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 09:36 (twenty years ago) link

There's one reasonably good shop around the corner from Manneken Pis: You won't find *exactly* what you're looking for - the selection is not that great - but you can find really cheap things. (Like the V3 I found for about 4 euros!)

definitely belgians. about 200 of them ,outside a club, all shoving and pushing and squeezing their way forwards, trying to get through one tiny entrance, despite the fact that the boucer had already said "it's sold out! go home!" very odd.

you were there? that's where i was! couldn't get in for love nor money but the scrum of people was ridiculous anyway...we waited 20 minutes then gave up and went to see tiga instead...and were faced with the exact same scenario, only with poncey club kids instead of smelly crusties!

i guess they must have been the only two decent events on that night, in the whole city. poor buggers.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 February 2006 13:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Aww, that's a shame, it was a really crazy show and night overall. Did they tell you it was full? We had to "queue" for 20 minutes, but in the end all was fine (esp. when they opened a second foor). I think the door organisation was more to blame than the kids, really.

Belgium stands for multiple wonders:

Beer

Drugs

Small cars that look like shit and go like stink

Massive airports

Plenty highways like the "a10" the final exit of the E40 to Oostende not many ppl kno it but ppl go full out on that 22 km highway with no cops cameras or anything like that but, if youre lucky and fast enough, u can impress the chick on the train. The track stays next to the road for 5 km, plenty of time for some massive "representation" of power.

And last but not least

Drivers who KICK ASS!!! i was in germany a few weeks ago and my dad was doing about 220 kmh and i felt good in our 2001 bmw m5 with 400 horse stock v8. until maybe a pack of belgian in subis, crx's mitsu colts, peugeuot 406's and various other car including lancia delta integrales and Rover turbo's. We tried but we could not keep up at 296kmh and over, CHAPEAU, HAT OFF

Revive, because I am going to Brussels for three months from July.

I'm trying to find a cheap room to let and I'm emailing a woman about one in Etterbeek near the Petillon metro station. Does anyone know anything about that area?

Cathy (Cathy), Thursday, 6 April 2006 10:08 (eighteen years ago) link

No, sadly not. So I'll just post a message to revive the thread.

So what are you going to do in Brussels for three months? :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 6 April 2006 11:14 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm doing an internship at an NGO and re-learning French.

Does the Brussels metro stay open late, do you know?

Cathy (Cathy), Thursday, 6 April 2006 13:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Linking there is forbidden, the MIVB (metro company) says, but this is the schedule for the Petillon station.

In case it doesn't work: about 5AM to about midnight. It's on line 1A, which is one of the biggest lines in Brussels.

(Annoyingly, that MIVB site is only in French and Dutch.)

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 6 April 2006 13:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Ooh, thank you very much. Well, seeing as I don't know the address of where I'll be working or studying yet, it seems quite safe to just find somewhere by a metro station.
