maybe it looks better the more traditionally feminine you are?

patti smith did okay (as above)

it's such a weird thing to be standard for dudes

yeah i think it just tends to look good on taller thinner people, male and female

not to say others cant rock it well

i wish i was obligated to wear ties tbh, it would be a clear case of trying too hard at my current place of employment

It's probably true, though. Not going to let it stop me all the same.

it is not true of all clothes at all, see wrap dress for instance

ties are cool
i resisted them for a long time
but it's really nice to have a reason to wear one. the try-hard thing sorta applies to ties w/o gender constraints i think?, though prob much less w/guys. like i sorta feel like i need an excuse. i am scruffy & so i feel like if i wear one people are expecting that i'm at a job interview or something

it is not true of all clothes at all

no, i know, and its probably even less generally true for women than it is for men, just more of a :/ moment

i dont think i get women and ties unless its a collared shirt, like when worn loose at the neck it just seems like itd be nicer to wear an actual scarf?

f (Lamp), Thursday, 13 December 2012 04:44 (eleven years ago) link

isn't that just true of ties though? that they need collars?

kristof-profiting-from-a-childs-illiteracy.html (schlump), Thursday, 13 December 2012 04:53 (eleven years ago) link

Scarves don't say the same thing as ties at all, though! A tie is a totally different statement.

@laurel - that makes sense. i was thinking of someone i know who often wears them very loose around her neck in way that i think is supposed to be sort of cutesy-punk but ends up looking sloppy and sort of dumb.

but like in the miu miu f/w campaign w/ chloe sevigny theyd be making a completely different statement to put her in scarf or even w/o a tie, the ads aggressive androgyny would feel different, less assertive maybe?

i think women in ties are great. would suggest skinnier widths for most collared shirts, but if you collar can accommodate a wider tie you can go wide -- the wide-tie look can get Annie Hall pretty quick, which may be good or bad depending on what you're going for. stay away from flat shiny silks in favor of something with a little more texture but that is a personal preference.

Are ties unfomfortable or shirts with the wrong-sized neck?
