"dreams and nightmares" (the intro track) has been getting airplay here, can't find if it's a single tho, holy shit it's so good
― ty based gay dead computer god (zachlyon), Monday, 8 July 2013 21:52 (ten years ago) link
you mean on 92Q? yeah it's not really a single (although it has a video), i've asked around and it seems like no stations outside Baltimore are playing it in heavy rotation like they are here, even in Philly.
― some dude, Monday, 8 July 2013 21:54 (ten years ago) link
yeah I got D&N on release date and can't remember the last time an opening track knocked me on my ass like that one did.
especially when he gets to the beat change-up and "HOLD ON WAIT A MINUTE/Y'ALL THOUGHT I WAS FINISHED?" bit.

actually might've been WKYS? wld be cool if it spread anyway. god gr8 song so glad someone thought meek mill leased a car

ive heard D&N intro on the radio in new york
i expected 'levels' to do better than it has
― rap steve gadd (D-40), Monday, 8 July 2013 22:49 (ten years ago) link
the radio edit of "levels" is kinda wack
i thought that was gonna be a breakthrough track for him tho, it seemed huge right when it dropped but maybe overshadowed by kanye and jay by now
― J0rdan S., Monday, 8 July 2013 22:51 (ten years ago) link
when songs are 'singles' off mixtapes i can never really tell what the expectations even are, obviously if it was a huge hit they'd be happy and run with it, but it seemed to me more like a kind of 'this song is dope, and we can just drop it without worrying about a drake verse or something to get us a release date.' like "Lean Wit It" was for Dreamchasers 2.
― some dude, Monday, 8 July 2013 23:08 (ten years ago) link
i think it's that the concept of the song feels like something that should be a hit

Does it seem like Dreams and Nightmares Intro is just now hitting critical mass for whatever reason? I saw people go nuts over it at the club the other week, then heard a whole bunch of frat boys play it at inappropriate volumes at a tailgate before a Brewers game, where it's not Ryan Braun's walk-up music, and then this week Drake randomly tweeted about it ("one of the best rap moments of our generation")
― Evan R, Friday, 2 May 2014 15:25 (nine years ago) link
hard for me to say, it's been consistently big in Baltimore since it was released. they had it in heavy rotation on the local radio station, like every hour all day, for a good chunk of last year.
― some dude, Friday, 2 May 2014 15:33 (nine years ago) link
i would say "probably not" but it does have a weird/interesting life

Enjoying the hell out of the new LP on first listen. Already seems much better than Dreams & Nightmares.
Bummed "B-Boy" and "Monster" aren't on this, though; both of those singles kicked.
― Evan R, Monday, 29 June 2015 18:17 (eight years ago) link
Interesting use of features on this album. Almost everyone feels like a real collaboration, where the guest is integral to the track and its character.
― Evan R, Monday, 29 June 2015 19:24 (eight years ago) link
got about 2/3 through, skipped the chris brown feature because lol no, stopped as soon as the weeknd came on
i liked most of it and will go through it all eventually but will someone please tell meek how bad he is at rap&B/crossover-type tracks, like he really sucks at them and keeps doing them...this failing is at least halfway contingent on the terrible people usually supplying the hooks in these situations but still
― slothroprhymes, Monday, 29 June 2015 19:34 (eight years ago) link
I hate the Chris Brown track, but it doesn't fuck up the album the way I feared. It slows in pretty cleanly, somehow. The Weeknd track is Weeknd-y, but I don't hate it, which is more than I can say for pm any other Weeknd track from the last two years.
― Evan R, Monday, 29 June 2015 19:59 (eight years ago) link
He's a Rick Ross protege and he's got Diddy on the album and he's dating Nicki Minaj... rap&B crossover is in his blood. It's not his best look, but I prefer it to the J. Cole piano rap of his last record
― Evan R, Monday, 29 June 2015 20:00 (eight years ago) link
i mean i understand the commercial realities of those tracks needing to be on there...sort of? i suppose its unfair to want every song to be dreams & nightmares intro or tony story or even levels (a pop look that's good for him)

Dreams And Nightmares has joints, it just excelled more at the slow moody stuff than what people wanted from him. "Who You're Around" is like the only essential Mary J. rap album collab of the last 10 years, "Traumatized" is great, Meek's "Maybach Curtains" verse is like a thesis for the whole album buried in an otherwise terrible song.

I like this album, but I do wish he'd worked "Monster" and "B Boy" into the tracklist. It could use a few more peaks.
― Evan R, Thursday, 9 July 2015 21:55 (eight years ago) link
Neither of his albums are quite as much fun as they should be
― Evan R, Thursday, 9 July 2015 22:01 (eight years ago) link
yeah i'd add "fuck you mean" to the list of buzz singles that are better than half the album and otm about fun
random forgotten singles and freestyles being better than your official albums, wonder who that reminds me of
― lex pretend, Thursday, 9 July 2015 22:12 (eight years ago) link
yeah "Monster" and "B Boy" would easily be the fastest songs on the album if they were on it, really would've helped the range of the record. the former was just starting to build momentum on the radio before it not being on the album and the Nicki single dropping kinda killed it.
"Fuck You Mean" was produced by a Baltimore dude I know (J. Oliver, who also did stuff on Dreamchasers 3), great track, unfortunately came out so long ago that i'm sure it wasn't even considered for the album.

The problem with both records is that Meek only really works in two registers - eye-popping intensity and even-more-eye-popping intensity, and whenever he tries to move into a different gear, like the R&Bish tracks here, he can't really simmer down appropriately.
Still wish there was an Amen on this, or even two or three of them - if he's going to make pop songs that's a much better look for him.
― Matt DC, Friday, 10 July 2015 07:53 (eight years ago) link
The problem is that Meek's idea of settling down is to hire The Weeknd as guest.

http://www.vulture.com/2015/07/meek-mill-drake-twitter-rant.html
this new suddenly concocted meek-drake beef thing is hysterical
i don't necessarily believe meek given the explanation for why he seems to be mad at drake but then again wouldn't be shocked - like, oh wow, you've really blown the lid off the hideous scandal of people using ghostwriters as if that's not a thing that's ever happened
Specifically, Meek (who captions his Instagrams with Drake lyrics) claims Drake doesn't write his own raps; he has a ghostwriter, possibly one Quentin Miller (a composer from Atlanta, credited on Drake's latest release). His complaint ultimately seems to stem — at least in part — from the fact that Drake's not tweeting or supporting Meek's new album, specifically the collab on "R.I.C.O."

"All Eyes On You," "Amen," and "Bag Of Money" are the only ones that were top 5 on any Billboard charts (rap charts, not the Hot 100 or anything). "I'm A Boss," "Dreams & Nightmares," "Monster," and "Levels" are some other ones that would be considered his most popular songs that he'd probably perform. what's your point in all of this?

i don't think that he's Lil Flip yet, he's still got the opportunity to do something interesting with this moment. i really liked the 4 songs he released from Dreamchasers 4 last week, although i really wish he'd just drop the tape already. going back to jail would definitely make it harder to recover any momentum, though.
