Nice one, I was thinking of nominating Pigs. Black Dice are very much missing from EOY polls this year and yet Mr Impossible is the best thing they've done since Beaches & Canyons - beating Battles at their own game; total turbo-driven corruscated rave.

Hey Johnny Fever if at some point you want me to link to the spreadsheet in the opening post then just shout. It'll probably be useful once the thread grows.

dyslectic Christ Brown (longneck), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 13:39 (eleven years ago) link

I can't work out if I like Melody's Echo Chamber. On one hand it's quite pleasant and has quite a few moments of transcendence into something wonderful. On the other hand, it's yet another 2012 album with hazy indistinct chimey fuzz-guitars and a detached female vocal, that falls somewhere along a tri-axis between the Knife, the XX and Dirty Projectors without really grabbing my attention very much or making me very excited at all.

Nadia Oh - Taking Over The Dancefloor

Wasn't this on last year's list?

― The Reverend, Wednesday, December 12, 2012 10:52 AM (3 hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Yes, this placed last year. You get one nomination back, Michael B Higgins.

Chairlift - I Belong In Your Arms
Chairlift - I Belong In Your Arms (John Talabot & Pional Remix)

Remember remixes get counted together with the original (a policy that doesn't always make sense, but hey), so dog latin if you're worried about maxing out your nominations maybe scratch one of these?

"Somebody That I Used To Know" placed last year, should it be off the table this year?

Yes

a Christmas .gif for you from (seandalai), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 14:29 (eleven years ago) link

I think of "Somebody That I Used To Know" as being from this year really, as this was the year it charted. I'll claim back that nom then w/r/t Chairlift

besides Sunny Real Estate (dog latin), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 14:33 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i'm sure most of ilx hadn't heard the Gotye song until after last year's poll, but i'm fine w/ it being restricted from placing 2 years in a row. just frees up more room on my noms/ballot.

some dude, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 14:35 (eleven years ago) link

We had the same discussion last time with "Ass on the Floor" iirc. Pretty much the only rule we have about nominations is that if something places one year it can't be nominated in a subsequent year.

Wait, Witch Mountain had a record out this year? This is what I get for only reading the metal thread when they do their EOY poll. Said poll last year introduced me to 'South of Salem'. Excited to hear the new one!

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 15:14 (eleven years ago) link

New Witch Mountain is better than South of Salem, and "Bloodhound" is from a new single that you can get for free from the Scion AV club. It's the best thing they've done yet.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 15:15 (eleven years ago) link

DL, Words and Music was nommed by Kitchen Person and you've nommed Bat For Lashes twice. I know it's good, but...

fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 15:21 (eleven years ago) link

I don't understand why we've adopted this half have to be albums/half have to be tracks rule just cause ship can't count past 15.

― The Reverend, Wednesday, December 12, 2012 5:54 AM (4 hours ago)

i don't understand this actually - do we have to nominate 15 of each as per the first sentence or can we nominate eg 25 tracks and 5 albums as per the second? if the former, that's dumb

― lex pretend, Wednesday, December 12, 2012 5:57 AM (4 hours ago)

30 noms, nominate what you like afaict.

― Albert Crampus (NickB), Wednesday, December 12, 2012 6:04 AM (4 hours ago)

NickB otm. Everyone has the option of splitting their noms evenly now that we've upped the total to 30 from 25, but you can really still nominate as much of one and as little of the other as you feel like (within 30).

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 15:22 (eleven years ago) link

why limit the # at all, honestly

Go Narine, Go! (ShariVari), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 15:23 (eleven years ago) link

haha JF you drive me nuts. what i complained about before was that the OPTION of being able to use more nominations on albums vs. singles created a whole dilemma on what to allot more of my noms to. the option is still there, therefore the dilemma is still there. the only thing that's better now is that at least it's an even number!

― some dude, Wednesday, December 12, 2012 6:39 AM (3 hours ago)

<3 u, some dude.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 15:24 (eleven years ago) link

why limit the # at all, honestly

When I did the alt 70s album poll a few years ago (and I think it happened again in the 20th century track poll), some clown came in and dropped 300 nominations in one go, half of which were junk, and then never even voted.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 15:26 (eleven years ago) link

why limit the # at all, honestly

Good question. The main argument is that if people started dumping their personal top 100 lists, then the thread and spreadsheet would become unusable. Having a cap means that people have to think a bit harder about what to nominate and leads to a better shortlist.
