This is a perfect album for walking, as I discovered on a two-hour trek around the neighborhood (and a lake, no less).

OH WOW I WAS SEARCHING FOR THE PERFECT "WALKING" ALBUM

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:50 (eighteen years ago) link

I thought that said Wanking.

Googley Asearch (Toaster), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:29 (eighteen years ago) link

The fake 'Chromakey Dreamcoat' is so much better than the rather dull 'by numbers' real version.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:36 (eighteen years ago) link

also, when will you people stop bothering with YSI and use the better free uploaders?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:37 (eighteen years ago) link

it's just a harmless observation, wtf.

bill neil (inabillity), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:47 (eighteen years ago) link

it's just harmless joke, wtf!

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 16:06 (eighteen years ago) link

am i wrong in finding this thinner and more transparent than the boc i'm accustomed to? so far nothing as thick n delirious as "julie and candy", or as infinitely loopable as "amo bishop", or as genuinely serene as "corsair" ("tears from the compound eye" is trying too hard). the lone gimmick = the guitar samples (plus fake fingering on "peacock tail")(quiet dan perry).

jermaine (jnoble), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 21:36 (eighteen years ago) link

ok....so i'm new to this here...but it's september 7th,7:18 pm....florida time.are you guys meaning to tell me that it's actually leaked?if so,somebody help me out with a soulseek tag so i can get it off ya.how can you be sure it's the real thing?

jimmy berger, Wednesday, 7 September 2005 22:16 (eighteen years ago) link

what does the time have anything to do with it? are you trying to check if we are posting from the future?

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 22:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Son, this record is fine. Is it more of the same? Yes. Does it take fewer chances than Geogaddi? Yes. Does it sound like monkeys ripping off MHTRTC and not quite understanding what made that LP so special but still trying really hard to re-create it? Yes, which is why it's REALLY GOOD and I REALLY LIKES.

Petroski (petroski), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 23:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Um...they ARE monkeys, aren't they?

So, as everyone should do, I got very stoned and listened to this album with friends.

Of course, this meant that I was in and out of the album whilst talking to others, but I really liked what I heard. Obviously I need to hear it on headphones, out walking, etc. But there are some real gems on it.

Incidently, one of my friends has only liked single B.O.C. songs (1969, etc) in the past, but not complete albums. This one though he did really like. I'm not sure if that means they've made a much more "accessable" record, but it seems like that might be the case.

It does sound a lot less menacing than their other stuff, but instead it sounds much warmer and almost serene.

I dunno, I still don't know what song is what and which is called which. On the plus side though, by the time the album comes out I'll be madly in love with it.

Also, the guitars sound cool. Lighten up and enjoy the record.

Erock Lazron, Thursday, 8 September 2005 04:36 (eighteen years ago) link

but maybe this time, instead of actually liking the complete album, your friend just liked a whole bunch of single B.O.C. songs in a row

stoner

venimdenim, Thursday, 8 September 2005 05:34 (eighteen years ago) link

If what I've got is real, and I am reliably informed that it is, then I've enjoyed it more off first listen than anything else I've heard by them.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 8 September 2005 08:04 (eighteen years ago) link

So we all have that album (however we will buy it anyway in october) and we listened it carefully... So did we find some back-playing encrypted hidden messages? We already know that the end of "Satelitte Anthem Icarus" contains a back-played melody.
Candidates are: Chromakey Dreamcoat (some filtered speaking). Peacock Tail (from approx. 3:40 starts some music or speaking on background), 84' Pontiac Dream (again, some noise on background), Sherbert Head (from 0:21 some voice of woman speaking).....
Well, it is Boards of Canada as i like them! :)

jermaine is absolutely correct about this album's lack of muscle. even by boc's own standards, this is a pretty wispy, conservative record; there's not nearly enough tension or counterpoint or drama. if they were going to go down this path, i would have preferred an extrapolation on the beautiful place ep (ie. more tracks like "peacock tail"). also, i think the guitars were maybe a bad idea; i totally sympathize with the desire to bring new elements into the fold but there are a million and one other places they could have gone. the acoustic + synths thing has been done to death already, don't understand why such a special sounding band would want to shift their sound more towards the middle..

question for the techies...if i were to use a program (goldwave) to resave the 192kb files at 320kb, would that improve the sound quality (or just take up more disk space!)

help please!

venimdenim, Thursday, 8 September 2005 16:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Isn't that just a re-encode?

That will make the quality worse i think.

Googley Asearch (Toaster), Thursday, 8 September 2005 16:28 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, in addition to taking up more disk space, you might open yourself up to some weird artefacting. any of the frequencies you'd hear above 192kps have already been eliminated in the wave -> mp3 encoding process.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 8 September 2005 16:37 (eighteen years ago) link

you can't add quality that wasn't there to begin with

Googley Asearch (Toaster), Thursday, 8 September 2005 16:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I was pretty underwhelmed at first. Some songs seemed kinda bland, others seemed mistakable for Moby, some of the beats seemed drum machine-ish. Some of the progressions just seemed too...happy. I think I really was expecting to hear more Geogaddi or MHTRTC, and this album isn't either of those. It's not a linear progression from their previous albums. It's more of a sidestep.

After a few listens, it really started to grow on me. I threw on the good ol' headphones and gave it some good attention. The layers and melodies and complexities really started to reveal themselves, and before long I realized it's the same BOC I know and love, just with a new spin. The guitar is great on some songs (Hey Saturday Sun is my current favorite), and the beats are better than I gave them credit for initially. There are, true to BOC tradition, lots of OMG-shit-my-pants-so-dope melodies buried in there. I think the backwards synth bassline that kicks in at about 3:45 on Oscar STRE is one of the dopest lines they've ever made (and, of course, it doesn't repeat, which I've always loved about their best melodies.)

All in all, it's a really sweet album. I'm not sure that it tops MHTRTC or Geogaddi. I don't think it does, but that will take months of listening to determine. It certainly is a quality BOC album though, and it'll be in my car and on my computer playlist and in my MP3 player and in the bathroom boombox for months to come. (And of course I'll be buying in on cd and vinyl in BOCtober.)

he should.he most certainly should.though something tells me that karma has already had it's day(life?) with him.hence the juvenile antics.dude,it's time to fess up....and do the right thing.otherwise, you'll gain MORE wait, grow MORE depressed, and not even your mother will look at you......dude,that's the only woman that still does!
oh
and i got my answer elsewhere.
thank you to all kind souls.

cockledoodledoo, Thursday, 8 September 2005 18:17 (eighteen years ago) link

I wouldn't invest too much headphone time into an mp3 version of the album btw. The waves contain digital gems that fill the voids.

snakefukker, Thursday, 8 September 2005 18:19 (eighteen years ago) link

One more thing to keep in mind. BoC was never half as entertaining as when they made mental associations with such commonplace items as the golden ratio, occult literature, cults and the like. Remove the hype and anchors to the real interesting materials and the magick disappears a little more with every listen now.

hipNoSYS, Thursday, 8 September 2005 18:21 (eighteen years ago) link

wait.wait.damn cutty,you win this one.it should've been "weight".....not wait.cutty-1,jimmy-0.
maybe karma is getting me.

cockledoodledoo, Thursday, 8 September 2005 18:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah. The guitars work on the album is mediocre atbest.Real basic chord progressions that only really barely work on satelite blah blah blah.Lets hope this promo is all the left over material from the real album.

johnweener, Thursday, 8 September 2005 18:26 (eighteen years ago) link

I just downloaded this... beautiful.. once again BOC prove to be masters of radiant divine joy... breathtaking... simply breathtaing... a religious experience.... fuck cutty and all the other techno haters... BOC are gods!
